As we've shared before, we hear from many of you who struggle to just "get it all done".
One thing we acknowledge is that our lives online are just a snippet of what takes place behind the scenes, and we never want to give the impression that we actually "get it all done". We simply don't!
But what we do get done is thoughtfully planned out, and the things that happen first must be managed well, otherwise, we would stop it all in a heartbeat! So what is the MOST IMPORTANT thing?

    We use the "gator system."
Gator metaphor: you're in a row boat/canoe, going down a river full of alligators. You need to focus on *three* things in order:
    1. The direction of the boat (make sure you're following the path you need to be on to get to your goal, steer away from obstacles).
    2. The gator closest to the boat (the next significant challenge, by chronology).
    3. The biggest gator (the biggest challenge you foresee facing in the next period of time, be it days, weeks, months, or years).

Thank you for the reminder that I cannot do everything all the time. I sat with paper and pencil to prioritize my list and found afterward that I did not have "me" on it. 😏 Now, "me" is first because with taking care of "me," nothing else will get done. Again, thank you for the reminder of what is essential.

Great message. 👏 We SO need this reminder. When people don't come first, there will come a time when deep regret sets in. NEVER have I heard an elderly person say, "I spent too much time building and maintaining relationships with those I love." We were created to be in relationship. Kids far more often remember times together with fondness more than "things" received.

This was an aptly timed video for our family on our small homestead. I do have a question for you guys that is weighing heavy on our family. We moved more rural on a modest sized parcel to figure out if we were really cut out for a rural homestead life and if we wanted to stay small or expand. We continue to feel the urge to expand. We no longer can afford more land where we are due to surging prices. This means we need to relocate. Trying to decide where to go feels such an overwhelming task. We research so much we end up in analysis paralysis. My question is not so much, how did you decide which state to go but more so how did you decide which states you didn't want to go to?

Great video…always a struggle. One thing that’s helped us be more productive and maintain balance is to use small margins of time wisely…..if I’m waiting on hubby while he’s finishing up something, I’ll find a marginal job to tackle even if it’s just 15 min. Added up, those snippets of time in a given week, will check off a list just as well as waiting for “all the stars to align” to tackle it all at once. These are things that may not be on a to do list, but you know needs a short amount of attention.

Thanks for the video. I get so annoyed with people who are drive by and see us out working and want to stop and say”hi” absolutely kills my momentum:(

What happens when there are no more stores to simply buy your garden vegetables from?

Work to create community. Years ago I visited friends in a farming community and even though everyone had gardens they still shared as some people were better at growing different things. Some would grow large plots of cauliflower, cucumbers, etc., then trade with the others. Worked well and everyone had a variety of foods to enjoy and preserve.

My husband and I have bought a piece of land, and we spend weekends trying to get the infrastructure in place so we can move out there. It's hard. We're in our 50's. We've started attending a church on our dirt road. Not every weekend yet, but we're moving in that direction. This last weekend, we took precious time out to go to the Farmers Market and begin meeting the local homesteaders. These are the people who will still be there if store shelves are empty. Once we get to know them, they're the ones we'll call for help, advice and perspective. When our new neighbors need help, we help them. Community is important.

I have to admit that mainly want your wife.
I don't know how much land you have but you seem to have a lot of trees I was wondering if you could make a couple more pastures to help rotate them.? I know pigs and goats help with the establishment of this. I haven't seen any pics or goats. But it doesn't have to be a long time investment.
