I love Elite, but my god they make things so anti intuitive. Just the engineer stuff is a mess too. So confusing, don't understood anything until I saw this video. How hard can it be? I mean could just talk to an engineer and he would say: "I can make your missiles this or this, just give me these items to build it". He is the engineer, not me. Let him do the fucking work
Yes, seems it will go that direction (space legs) since we will get the commander edition soon. The game just misses the human touch and a bit more atmosphere. Need to be able to walk to a bar and talk to humans. And it needs a bit more dirty / worn look on spaceships. I miss the Wing Commander style: Han Solo look :D
100% on target. I don't know exactly what year this is 3306....something?... The ships all look the same and the interiors are all almost the same...? It's weird. The cockpits in all the ships sensors and LED readouts all need to be given a face lift. Everything seems counter intuitive but also seems intentionally so. No planetary bases to build/buy? WHY NOT? You should be able to colonize any planet especially if you discovered it! Plop a base down begin terra forming, start and industry or agriculture ship your goods to whoever needs it. Build up strong defenses to protect your base, help others. Hopefully this is all coming with the upcoming release..... or not. I hear Elite in VR is amazing and thinking about doing it. Fly safe everyone.
I traveled over 2000 light years in my cobra tonight, in an attempt to obtain a grade 5 overcharged powerplant for my Vulture, which I transfered costing me well over a million credits. Six RNGs later and my night has been rendered completely pointless. I'm done with this game for a while now, I don't enjoy wasting entire evenings thanks very much.
I’m a new player, just bought Odyssey mere three days ago. I tried playing Elite about two years ago, but quickly gave up on it due to new player experience being way too overwhelming. This time I decided to give it a proper go and I can say I only regret for not picking this game up years ago. What an amazing game!! Anyhow, I hear phrases like “engineer Farseer” or “ship engineering” in every other guide video I watch. Everybody keeps talking about what to do at the engineer himself in order to get the upgrades. NOBODY though mentions where in your playthrough does a player get to interact with an engineer or where to find one. Is it a specific system? Is it an automated message one gets by completing some part of the game or reaching certain title or rank? This guide is by far the best guide I’ve found on the topic. Great job! And thank you 😊
Not sure how I feel about the whole Engineer game play, the basic idea is ok but the methodology used for player interaction with them just feels wrong to me. Maybe it's the fact that the player is required to grind up levels like this video demonstrates and all the while you are playing with a random generator for an unknown result at each step. I think it would have been better to have fixed outcomes based on a fixed number of requirements. That way if a player wanted say a high level frame shift drive upgrade they could look up what is required, source the materials, earn the credits and the go buy the damned thing. All this "gambolling" with resources for an unknown result just feels wrong in this type of game.
The RNG gods favored you quite nicely. I've attempted several times which involved doing 200 rolls to upgrade an FSD at a different engineer, and only increased my range by one ly. So, it was back to grinding agian, and then a 150 rolls got me no upgrade at all. Thus a lot of time spent for nothing. I don't have a problem with grinding, but if it's not going to give me any possible good results. And I've got to do it over and over and over repeatedly, and still not get a positive result. The whole process sucks. One bad apple ruins the bunch, hence the same goes for engineering, why bother doing any of the others.
Chaoswulff, just as a note ... The 25 Modular Terminals to unlock Quent are easy to obtain by doing (stacking) massacre missions in 17 Draconis. And guys it has NOT been nerfed, FD just fixed the issue with scimmers. Only ships you destroy in CZ's count for the missions. A lot of those missions also give you 4 Modular Terminal. You can still make insane amounts of Money there .... but only when the System is in civil war ... so check the state of it in the galaxy map first. greetings from germany
You're very welcome, though if you're looking for inspiration I would recommend this to see just how evil you can make one: th-cam.com/video/ixme7AmEOlQ/w-d-xo.html
Wait a minute. You don't need to apply the upgrade for it to count for unlocking the next level? Does it use the resources each time you do it though even if you don't apply it? Also, is a modification standalone or do they stack with lower grade upgrades of the same type? I mean does a grade 2 rapid fire modification simply replace a grade 1? Should you avoid getting the experimental effect until you've ground your way up to the highest grade you can reach, THEN take it?
If one has a the same chance of landing on any marker on that wheel for the experimental roll. The odds of getting an experimental effect would be 4:28 or 14.28%. A little better than 1:10. If that's the case (that one has an equal chance of landing on any wheel marker), then I like the way the devs did that. With the way odds tend to play out over the long term it's better to have less than whole number odds that are not rounded to the nearest 10 or a composite number. Oddly enough (pun intended) it's better to have a 7% chance at something than it is to have a 10% chance at it. Or in this case better to have a 14.28% chance at it than it would be to have 20% chance. I realize this is some oddly specific knowledge (last bad pun). I learned how to play/run out the odds when I was really into scratchers. And when I say that I mean I paid my dues and then some doing it. Sounds out there. But if one is the type that is not prone to superstition, is good at assessing risk, and good at exploring the dynamics of systems. It's a viable way to make a small living.
Is there anything you can do via engineering or any other method to make supercruise travel across entire solar systems take a less STUPIDLY LONG TIME?
Thanks for the info. I finally got a little wiser on the engineers. I have a question though; Now that you've got the upgrades, can you use those on other ships? (like store them and transfer them to other ships?) Or do you need to be in the ship you want to upgrade and do the upgrades then only count for that particular ship?
Selling commodities to Liz is a rather pitiful increase in rep. HOWEVER - she likes landmines, so selling those to her is better than any other random commodity. I believe it is similar for the other engineers.
You don't actually have to go to the engineer to see how to do the final unlock (200 landmines in this case). Just open the engineers tab from the right hand console as you do in the beginning and a 3rd line should appear beneith him/her, telling you what the last thing is.
Also, I might add. If you got tons of grade 1 materals, you can go all the way up to grade 5 only from those. I do not know the exact number needed, but the from grade 1-2, its 3 upgrades. From 2-3, I think its 9 upgrades. So if you have, say, 12 sulfurs, you can unlock grade 3 upgrades simply from doing grade 1:s. I had a TON of iron once and got all the way to grade 5. Took a lot of clicks though...
so when you unlock an Engineer ie, Felicita with meta-alloys, you dont need meta-alloys any more but can go in and out using other requirements ie. sulfur, etc. ?
Thank you for the video. You make leveling up an engineer look easy. Was the engineer you chose to level up easy to do because she doesn't require very rare resources?
+Guy Swartwood I think it may be the removal of commodities from blueprints and the fact I've got a good number of different materials at hand.... as I've since maxed out several engineers since recording this :)
Hi Chaos About a year ago I entered a Conflict Zone, twice and got vaporized:) since then, I didn't bother to go in again but now that I started upgrading my ships by engineering I find that many of the components that I need are only found from Military ships in, you guessed it, Conflict Zones. My question is, when I blow up a ship there when they release those materials, do I have to scoop them up to my ship?
What I do not get at ALL is it better to run the same module to Grade 5 or just start over at 5. For example to I run my FSD apply grade 1, run and apply grade 2, then take that grade 2 FSD and run and apply a grade 3 upgrade to that same FSD?
It's better to keep upgrading your existing module as you'll be able to see if the current roll is better than the last, you can always choose to not apply it if it's worse.
Got Horizins just now, know nothing about engineers only played original back in 2015. Was very confused this helps a bit, but i only have 2 engineers available to me, you have a huge list haha, how do i get more? just keep playing?
Hey there, the best place to check out for Engineers information is here: inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/ It gives you their invite and unlock requirements as well as letting you know who specializes in what and how to progress down the tiers :)
Okay so how do you get these materials? Also, do I need to do this with every ship I own? I can't fathom bringing my slow ass python 100+ light years to just upgrade... I have to spend alot more on FSD, Fuel scoop, etc just to haul ass.
i wonder if shes my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great..................................................................................great great granddaughter

Materials are pretty easy to get if you know where/how to look. Even the elusive Cracked industrial Firmware is possible to get 60 in about 2-4 hours play. As for rolls, there is a technique to regularly get better than the maximum on the rolls. Its not as much of a grind when you know the way it all works :)
Roll until you get one close to the max of whatever it is you are trying to get. Accept it. Then roll till you get past the maximum. Then accept it. Then roll till it goes higher still. You can usually push it way past the blue zone max. Quite often it doesn't take many extra rolls. Things like cracked industrial firmware can be found scanning medium security +++ sites. Don't scan private ones just the public. Usually 3-9 will drop at each location. Every rare material has its "special" area that will yield lots of them. Pharmaceutical isolators drop like candy in very high population, outbreak state systems. only found in high signal sources and they usually have 12-15 in each. make sure you go slow and in "deep space" (check your bottom left had side panel). I got 95 in just an hour. Every material can be found easily if you know how.
4:24 Does it have to be bought or can the cargo be stolen via a mission? Example deliver 50 land-mines, you abandon the mission but you keep the land-mines.
Sorry you lost me almost straight away. How in hell do I know what commodities the engineer wants before I get there and where do I get all the other weird stuff from? Figuring this out from scratch is gonna take longer than the lifespan if my pc and possibly me as well
It pins the blueprint from the engineer so you can see it from anywhere and perform basic engineering from any station through the remote engineering function.
Reminds me of the devs on the stream saying "buggy" and Ed rolling his eyes.. then 15 mins later making the same mistake :P BTW love the new intro, also this video seems to have been intentionally delivered in a slower more tutorial style, which is cool too.

This is still the only introduction to engineering that makes sense to a beginner. Thanks.

Yes, seems it will go that direction (space legs) since we will get the commander edition soon.
The game just misses the human touch and a bit more atmosphere. Need to be able to walk to a bar and talk to humans. And it needs a bit more dirty / worn look on spaceships.

My god this guide is so simple and clear. I've watched many other videos. But your video finally made it click in my head. Thank you SOOOOO much
I'm happy to have helped.

Hello Alpha! Just gained access to Tod now, and improving my multicannons here...
niiiiiice new intro wolf!
Are the modifications on the left exclusive? Do you chose just one of them, or you can apply all?

The upgrades are tied to that specific module so you CAN store it and switch it to another ship if that's what you want to do.
Selling commodities to Liz is a rather pitiful increase in rep. HOWEVER - she likes landmines, so selling those to her is better than any other random commodity. I believe it is similar for the other engineers.
Very informative video, thanks for making this.
Good job, very informative video. You just gain a new subscriber.
+Lukasz Solanko happy to have you, welcome to the pack!
You can just spam level 1 upgrades with easy to find materials like sulphur etc until you reach level 3 and even level 4 usually need about 60
How do you even see the menu where u can see ur progress and where the engineers are located?! been looking around like crazy. nothing.
Nice intro man!

Have a drink every time he says "go and..."
I wouldn't recommend that at all... the numbers of alcohol related deaths would sky rocket! 🤣

Happy to help
so when you unlock an Engineer ie, Felicita with meta-alloys, you dont need meta-alloys any more but can go in and out using other requirements ie. sulfur, etc. ?
Thank you ,i can use this info
very helpful
good video didnt know that they only show the recipes for modules equipped on your ship.
Great stuff - thank you!
Would love to see you test module damage from railgun with super penetration effect.
Thank you for the video. You make leveling up an engineer look easy. Was the engineer you chose to level up easy to do because she doesn't require very rare resources?

+Bernard Saavedra Aye, you need to scoop them just like commodity canisters... you can also use collector limpets
Tnx Chaos
Where do you get materials like carbon and sulfur and stuff like that? I haven’t seen any in game
Mining...
Do they stack? Could you keep modifying your missile module or can you only have one modification per module?
+Immortal no they don't, only one mod per module
3:40 you forgot to mention that you can check the engineers tab to check what they want to unlock them too
What I do not get at ALL is it better to run the same module to Grade 5 or just start over at 5. For example to I run my FSD apply grade 1, run and apply grade 2, then take that grade 2 FSD and run and apply a grade 3 upgrade to that same FSD?

is this the old version? I dont see the rolling thing everyones talking about. I grade 5'ed a bunch of stuff and ive yet to see any rolling.
Yes this is the old version of engineering, the only RNG now is how many attempts it'll take you to hit max.
Got Horizins just now, know nothing about engineers only played original back in 2015. Was very confused this helps a bit, but i only have 2 engineers available to me, you have a huge list haha, how do i get more? just keep playing?

how to get to that engineer tab, and also for me there is no engineer mission in eravate

Thankfully. Materials you collect are shared between all of your ships. Just make sure they have all been refined and not sitting in your cargo hold.
i wonder if shes my great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great great..................................................................................great great granddaughter
gonna need another 80 grates onto that list lol.
Logan Ryder Ryder XD
mind numbing grinding
Of course I have been epic. It's like my name and shit + Dragon. What else would you want?
Hey Chaos, have you noticed that most of the upper-level mods have at least one requirement reduced? Specifically the level 4 mods...?
All commodities have been removed from the recipes for the time being.
does anyone know how to unlock the first engineer I can't work it out. Then again I may just be being dumb.
Where do you find all these materials to get these upgrades?
Best place to check is here: inara.cz/galaxy-components
How do you modify multiple ships?
Do you still need to have horizons for the engineers?
+Low Flyer Aye, you do
You said it in your video description " GRIND " and I refuse to do it. Why do I have to search for metals on a planet its bloody stupid.
can we get the updated powerplay tutorial?
+Khaykeroth I'll put it on the to do list
The Mahon Reddit does have mighty Powerplay tutorials, which I hope can be turned into a nice video. Remember, the Alliance means freedom. www.reddit.com/r/EliteMahon/
Do you only unlock engineers when your a certain rank? I cannot find any on my over view stats. I am novice and merchant. Only started playing a couple days ago. Fresh noob.
All engineers require a different set of circumstances to unlock, the Dweller just needs you to trade at 5-ish black markets and others require specific ranks whereas another just needs you to have traveled a set distance from your starter system.
If you're unsure you can always consult this website: inara.cz/galaxy-engineers/
Ok thank you.
Ok so i went to find the dweĺler in wryd but i couldn't find black hide, it wasn't listed in locations.
Maybe i haft to do more missions.
No, to unlock him you need to have traded at 5 different black markets before he shows up.
I wish either the rolls ended up better or the materials were easier to collect and find.
+Real D Hop personally I would like the mods to be a fixed outcome with set materials and to get better stat mods you put in more rarer materials
I agree. This would be nice. That said, I would still prefer there to be some variability in results - so that no two ships are identical.
And what is that magical technique you are talking about?
I haven't played much cus of the engineers
4:24 Does it have to be bought or can the cargo be stolen via a mission? Example deliver 50 land-mines, you abandon the mission but you keep the land-mines.
+Adam Ewan Keachie that is a very good question
Sorry you lost me almost straight away. How in hell do I know what commodities the engineer wants before I get there and where do I get all the other weird stuff from? Figuring this out from scratch is gonna take longer than the lifespan if my pc and possibly me as well
do you need horizons dlc for engineers?
Aye, you do need Horizons for the engineers
What does "Pin Blueprint" mean?
+Gubru it pins it to that engineers section of the view engineers tab from the right hand pannel.
Thank you!
managed to keep it PG with Qwent's name :)
+Arcane Intervention Aye... though it water really, really tough to do so! ;)
though it water? also, love the new intro.
9:40 - "9 times out of 10, or even 90% of the time". Ha. Fractions.
So what if you die? Do you lose all your engineer mods?
No, as long as you can afford the rebuy costs you'll keep the mods on your ship .
That color is called purple, not pink Chaos. lol
pink???
"9/10 times, or even 90% of the time" bleh
Wot is pin blueprint ?
It pins the blueprint from the engineer so you can see it from anywhere and perform basic engineering from any station through the remote engineering function.
ChaosWulff - Sci-Fi Gaming aha that sounds pretty useful, so i assume you can pin more blueprints than just one
as far as I'm aware you can pin one from each engineer, and since each one specializes in different things this can be very useful indeed.
Thanks for the info. cheers
25.. modular terminals.. why so many. :-(
just be happy none of the engineers want hutton mugs
This does not show you how to unlock engineering. It pretty much shows end game engineering..
Blueprints! Not Recipes :P
+Regan Heath years of playing MMOs to blame there ;)
Reminds me of the devs on the stream saying "buggy" and Ed rolling his eyes.. then 15 mins later making the same mistake :P
BTW love the new intro, also this video seems to have been intentionally delivered in a slower more tutorial style, which is cool too.
If all you want to do in this game is explore, with an improved component, like a shield, you are forced into combat. If you only want to mine yet still want to improve a component, like hull, you are forced into combat. The Engineers force All players into combat.
What a load of bullshit.
