@Lyre Burch You're right breeding a winner is very much luck, but even so, the large majority of top racehorses come from strong bloodlines. There are exceptions -- John Henry and California Chrome, for example, came from modest bloodlines -- but your chances of getting a winner are a whole lot better with a top stallion (and mare). About Tapit you're mistaken. He's proven to have strong genes. His stud fee started out at just $15,000. The first few years of his stud career Tapit would not have received nearly as many mares, nor as strong a lineup of mares, as, say, American Pharoah would have had early on. But Tapit's babies were successful from the first year they hit the track; he had 15 stakes winners in his first crop, which included the 2-yr-old filly champion. He consistently improved on his mares. Year after year he was producing strong crops. That's why his stud fee rose to $300,000 -- a *1900% increase* . (Currently it's $225,000, but he is 18 and his stud career is winding down. He is sire of Tacitus, who will be among this year's Kentucky Derby favorites.) Plenty of stallions who enter stud duty with much higher expectations, who get better mares than Tapit did those first couple of years -- it's at least 3 years after a stud's first breeding season before anyone can begin to have an inkling how he'll do at stud -- do not fare nearly as well as he did/has. More recently Uncle Mo, and further back Mr. Prospector, have had similar arcs to their stud careers. Good but not great racehorses who entered stud with modest expectations, relatively low stud fees and not the best mares, yet very quickly made a big impact in the breeding shed. It happens, just like there are great runners who prove poor or at best mediocre sires, e.g., Citation or Spectacular Bid. (There is a wide perception Secretariat was a poor sire, which is not true. Far from a flop, he was a better than average sire of runners; but despite getting the very best mares early on, he was not a truly outstanding sire of runners like his contemporaries Mr. Prospector, Alydar and Seattle Slew.)

It doesn't take all day to breed to one mare. Also it's called nature and I'm sure wild horses breed way more than Tapit in a day. Stop anthropomorphizing animals they are not people
16 isn't old for any regular barn horse, but almost all major athlete horses (racing and cow horses mostly) that work that hard, they cripple before they are 20, it just proves a horse can only take harsh training methods for so long. Personally, I don't like his color. Looks like a kids pony. But hey, he's making a lot more money than me, so god for him lol
16 may not be old for a horse... but 3 mares everyday breeding and we still have horses being put down and sent to slaughter for "population control" . Do you see the problem?

@@glenlynch1 There's no reason to mention Northern Dancer in this video because he died in 1990. For pedigree purposes Tapit only has one cross of Northern Dancer because the 2nd cross is in the 6th generation. Tapit does have two crosses of his son, Nijinsky Ii that are closer. However, for influence on the pedigree I'd say the two crosses of Mr. Prospector are probably more influential for American racing on the dirt.
Of course he's treated well. The main owner also breeds a lot of mares to him and races the offspring. The horse is syndicated into shares of ownership. I don't know what percentage ownership the original owner retained. Tapit's owner was the owner of the Winchell's Donuts chain. His son owns and runs the Winchell racing stable now.

Horses are raced far too early. Their bodies are not done growing until they are 4 or 5, yet they start race training before two years of age. Physically, and probably mentally, they just aren't ready. I think this is a big reason for all the break downs, all the track euthanasias. Another reason, is that injuries are often not given time to heal properly, and the horse is over medicated with NSAIDs. Necropsies on euthanized horses show unhealed injuries, but also up to 60 stomach ulcers-from the NSAIDs they are force fed to mask pain. Imagine being forced to perform physical tasks your body is not ready to do, being inured because of it, then being given every day, medication that gives you stomach ulcers. How would YOU perform, the next time you're asked to do what you aren't ready to do? I know that medical history can identify, on bones, individuals who were enslaved, or made to do physical labor before they were done growing. The bones are actually marked and scarred by soft tissue injuries that never adequately heal. It wouldn't surprise me, if its the same with horses. Dog racing has been stopped in Florida. Its time we stopped horse racing in the entire USA.
Do not push for racing to be shut down. Hundreds of thousands of horses will end up dead that way, just like how the vast majority of the greyhounds are going to die. Either way, Wolffs law supports that a healthy amount of work on a young animal/human is GOOD because the bones will change how they're growing to adapt to heavier work loads. Those horses are better off starting young, than they are late. They will break down MORE if started late. It's like expecting a kid who has sat in his room for years to be able to do the same amount of work all at once, as the kid who does the same workload every single day and has for years.
@@mistyraestables Uh, no. A *heavy* amount of work(which is what racing is) on a young horse that is still growing is not good for that horse in anyway. Light riding to build some bone strength is different than racing. It's just like the controversy that has started about reining. Many horse's started for shows are usually retired by 6 due to injuries, while horse's that were started at 4+ years of age would stay sound and would retire in their 20's. Ideally, the horse's should be started between 4-5 years old then hit the track around 6 years old and you could have an animal that was much healthier, did not broke down at a young age, doesn't face the same injury rate, have a better chance of rehab after the track and would have a much longer race life But, money talks
@@mistyraestables No, there is a law supporting that bones in a healthy human or animal will adapt to loads under which it is placed over time which is significant for health as you get older past your time as stopping physical activities can make your bones weaker which can lead to more problems as you get older. Wollfs Law does not support the loading of young bones that still have much growing to do, nor does it mention anything about young and growing animals for a reason. *It's talking about healthy adults.* There is much scientific evidence supporting the claim that loading growing bones at a young age is very detrimental, such as deformed feet after going on pointe too early for a small example. A horses spinal joints(the back), doesn't receive full strength until around 6 years of age. *You are going to tell me that it is a good idea to overload the spinal joints on a two year old horse that are only at 33% growth that is not even designed for supporting vertical forces such as a rider then having the horse do hard work will "Make Their Bones Strong"?* Ha! If you are ignorant enough to believe that over scientific research and proof then you are too stupid for me to waste my time on
Karen Baker According to what I have read about horses, they don't actually reach full maturity until about 7 years old and, if I remember correctly, Thoroughbreds don't stop growing until the age of 8 years old. There are many horses used in racing that don't live to see their 7th or 8th birthday, as I'm sure you know. [Horse Racing Wrongs by Patrick Battuello reports on many of the horses killed at horse racing tracks all over the United States...]
Nanase B. Exactly. I am so tired of hearing how Princess Diana was "only a broodmare". She was well paid and at least she had her children for longer than a few months.
Sheesh! Humans and their greed. Using horses as commodities. If the offspring don't win, they are sent to slaughter unless a thoroughbred rescue organization takes them and retrains for other equine "sports". People don't realize just how cruel behind the scenes horse racing is. When I found out that most of the horses who lose, also are crueley shipped and slaughtered, I stopped supporting and going to the races. I never bet much, just loved the sound and excitement of watching the horses gallop around the track. This Stallion is beautiful, however - he is an exception to the rule.
you do realize a horse worth $100 thousand dollars wouldn’t be “shipped off to slaughter”, right? If a horse with this good of a pedigree with this sire wasn’t a good racehorse, it would be turned around and trained for hunter/jumper or dressage and then sold for its worth. Only low pedigree racehorses that aren’t worth that much get shipped to slaughter.
Sarah Monson wrong only a handful of horses become good racehorses and the majority become” claimers” racing in claiming races in which they can be claimed for certain price. Some are rescued and retrained for other horse sports or rescued and retired. And some do get sent to slaughter.
Yeah, yeah. And whatta think happens if racing is stopped? Hundreds to thousands of Thoroughbreds would be sent to slaughter. Happened a few years ago where I lived & they closed the track - every single broodmare & foal that couldn't be sold slaughtered. Besides the breed would eventually be threatened as racing is what they're bred for. All in all they're predominantly inferior to warmbloods as jumpers, they can be too high strung/temperament as riding horses, they aren't bred for the agreeability or intelligence of dressage or cattle herding horses, they don't have the strength to be driving horses, etc. So what do you suggest they do if racing is banned? Become expensive lawn ornaments?
Not true at all. The large large large majority of retired thoroughbreds either live their days out in a pasture, go to the breeding shed, or given a second career entirely. The Jockey Club has very strict rules preventing OTTBs from going to slaughter. There are some that slip by, but not very many whatsoever. Learn the facts before spewing nonsense 🙄
Saying a ton of thoroughbreds go to slaughter is an agenda pushed by PETA. PETA euthanizes 95%+ of the animals they take in, because theyd rather animals die out... so I wouldnt exactly take facts by them 🙄
You would be right if he actually was. The old guy said he could breed 2-3/ day but that's bragging, not actual. 125 mares a year is roughly 10 per month, correct?
Believe me breeding that many mares isn't gonna hurt him , we breed quarter horses , we also pasture breed , and our studs breed more mares than that and they are perfectly fine , I think it just depends on their body condition , if their loosing weight than yeah it prob wouldn't be a good idea to do a lot of breeding , but if their in good shape then let them have at it 👍

carol m yes because I don’t need pain to control a horse. But I also know my limits, I don’t take on more than I can handle so I don’t screw up a sensitive horse. Terrible handlers make terrible horses.
Lip chains are not there to control by pain. They put pressure in the right places, releasing a calming brain chemical known as endorphins. If it really hurt them, theyd be tossing their head and flipping out. They're thoroughbreds for christ sake... hot heated and prancy. Have you ever worked with one? @carol m Cropping- Prevents ear infections. Prevents the ears from getting stuck in things for working breeds. Prevents the ears getting grabbed onto by an animal. Docking- Makes the base of the tail stronger, in terriers its said that this is mainly done so that when chasing an animal down a hole, in case of emergency they can pull by the nub of the tail and not injure the dog this way. This also prevents the tail from getting stuck in objects or grabbed onto by another animal. On top of those, it also completely gets rid of the risk of happy tail. Most large breeds that are docked are docked for this reason, happy tail is incredibly common.

Greedy 3x a day. Let the horse rest for God's sake
it’s more than likely not every single day they make him do this
often during breeding season they breed 2 mares a day. He gets the rest of the day to be a horse in his pasture. Then he doesn’t breed from June to February
It doesn't take all day to breed to one mare. Also it's called nature and I'm sure wild horses breed way more than Tapit in a day. Stop anthropomorphizing animals they are not people
Non horse people turn everything into a joke. For instance, a 'live foal guarantee' is standard on EVERY breeding contract.
I'm starting to feel like there's a correlation between accusations of abuse and a lack hands-on experience and knowledge of horse behaviour.

At 1:10 why does that halter have a bit? Seems a little... overkill but I've never owned a horse. Anyone who has, is that necessary? People ride bitless so what's the point of putting a bit on a halter?
That’s not a bit. It’s a mouth chain because he’s a stallion.

Looks likes he's getting a pretty good life to me.

Ideally, the horse's should be started between 4-5 years old then hit the track around 6 years old and you could have an animal that was much healthier, did not broke down at a young age, doesn't face the same injury rate, have a better chance of rehab after the track and would have a much longer race life
But, money talks
There is LITERALLY a scientific law supporting it.
*It's talking about healthy adults.*
There is much scientific evidence supporting the claim that loading growing bones at a young age is very detrimental, such as deformed feet after going on pointe too early for a small example.
A horses spinal joints(the back), doesn't receive full strength until around 6 years of age.
*You are going to tell me that it is a good idea to overload the spinal joints on a two year old horse that are only at 33% growth that is not even designed for supporting vertical forces such as a rider then having the horse do hard work will "Make Their Bones Strong"?*
Ha!
He’s beautiful!
Yet people judge other humans who are willing to pay someone with great genes to produce with them.
Nanase B. yes let’s compare humans with animals in this situation
Nanase B.

If they dont like something, they always let you know.
@carol m Docking and cropping arent cruel. They have immense amounts of health benefits for certain breeds and should not be demonized.
