I don't understand why the DP/30 videos don't have more views. Honestly my favourite film interviews on TH-cam.

This is inspiring, not only because he doesn't drive...but because I always wanted to make a film featuring a city that is important to me like Boston...movies like Drive, Nightcrawler, and Heat impressed me with how well shot it was and heavily featured L.A.. Now knowing that he never went to Los Angeles before gave me hope I could do something like that someday too.
To me it would seem as if he LOVED driving and was FROM L.A....didn't expect the total opposite..

Great interview.. one of the rarest interviews, where the interviewer allows the interviewee to think-through and complete the whole sentence or whole chain-of-thought-process before shooting another question..

If you compare Refn here to how he talks in DP/30s interview for Neon Demon (and other more recent interviews), he's definitely transformed and changed his way of speaking. He seems more in touch and humble here. Interesting because I feel that's how his movies and tv show have evolved as well. More emotionally disconnected and distant. Bit of a shame as it seems he was in his prime between Bronson and Drive.

NWR's Albert Brooks explanation for casting reminded me a lot of PTA 's explanation for casting Adam Sandler in punch drunk love... I completely get what both directors see on both actors, of being ticking time bombs

Great interview. I love the story of how Drive was turned into a film, especially the bit about Refn editing the movie in his own house.

He's so clever. And I don't know what happened to Logan's Run (sad it didn't go through) but look! the guy knew what movies he will make up until 2016! He mentioned Only God Forgives, which he did make in 2013, and then I Walk With the Dead - which is now The Neon Demon!

I'm sure Logan's Run will happen. Give it another couple of years. Gosling is probably super busy.

21:32 "Help me by telling me what you think isn't working."
Absolutely the wisest advice for any artist, be it directors, painters, musicians. Take advice, take criticism and use it to make something better.

Yeah, he definitely made his name with Drive (especially in the US), but it's perfectly reasonable to think he has stronger films. I am of the opinion that his Pusher trilogy is his best work.
Can't wait for his next film though.

V All that said. he's an arbitrary filmmaker. It's very awesome to know you have a chance to make a living out of your ideals. Hollywood isnt the only place for filmmakers. and i love the thought, because i love film yet hate pretentious a-holes.

Here's a funny piece of information. He actually got in trouble for swearing on the BBC morning show in the UK. What happened was he got out and they interviewed him for quite a while and then Carrie (i forgot her last name) she asked "how do film some of these violent action scenes" and said "well it's like fucking" haha

what did you think of Only god Forgives? I feel its a much more intense version. its an accession of sorts for Nicholas to write a story about such uncomfortable subject matter. Yet its something WE ALL HAVE to deal with. so we all relate to the film. its pretty incredible. His films are human based rather than genre based. I think

Aint seen it yet but it seems difficult to watch. Not becuase its a bad idea but becuase Refn is so strange. That's my take. Watch Bronson.

  • @Zupiter8

there are so man opinionated comments on all of his videos. this is a direct abstraction to him driving us to be better intellectually. While his films make us feel an obligation to feel a sort of importance. Everyone is important on different scales and you must utilize your abilities in order to feel full.

  • @hennyM5

say you're taught French, and the person who taught you French had a Spanish accent, so you then ended up becoming fluent in French but spoke it w/ a Spanish accent. Would you consider it fair to be called pretentious for that? Do know what 'pretentious' means? (And as a side note, 'Hello' usually goes at the beginning)

How about you watch the pusher trilogy before you explain how he exploded onto the scene.
And please, don't use the public as an agreement. I can find Refn fans that have followed him from the beginning that would agree with me but thats not the point.

I saw Drive as a Capitalism story. The Worker; the factory owner; the investors...the investor bleeds the factory owner. The factory owner has been "taking advantage of the worker ever since. "

Refn's my fav director. But I was disappointed with Drive. He was a director that portrayed violence with uniqueness. Apart from the pusher trilogys even Valhalla was excellent. But Drive just seemed like he lost himself. The best actor in the film was that dude that got shot during the robbery.
