I'm....starting to see a trend with these stories. Parents on their deathbeds wishing they didn't have to leave their inheritances to their blood families. Well, they DON'T! All you need is a lawyer and a witness, and make out a will to exclude your blood family if you wish.
I've read some stories on reddit like that. Except sometimes they specifically left the certain family member/members only a penny. And made it clear that's all they get. Something that makes it so it can't be contested that they were accidently forgotten or something
It's unfortunately not that simple in some states any immediate blood relatives and spouces can contest the will and will almost always win. That's why most lawyers will advise to leave the lowest amount legally possible.

Do yourself a very big favor and never marry. If your relationship works, marriage contributes nothing to it. If your relationship doesnt work, a marriage gives your "partner" the leverage to screw you into the next century. If your "partner" has the intention to screw you over, which you will find out just after marrying, the marriage provides the tool to do so, and there is nothing you can do about it. Having kids with such a partner multiplies that.

Debt collectors will(but shouldn't) go after living family for medical costs of the decedent regardless of legal agreement, at least in the US. Collection agencies hope the family won't know their rights or pay out of fear.
There are some details to that..if someone signed as a responsible party they'll owe. In some states, they can sue the estate for medical bills. Some states, they can't. You need to know the laws in the US state you live in.

My mother's cable service refused to cancel her account (after her death) and sent my sister threatening letters, despite her not being on the bill. I told her to give them the address and plot number for the cemetery as mom's new address.
If Walter didn't get any inheritance, he wouldn't be on the hook for the medical bills. Once all the legacy money and property is added up and dispersed to the debtors, the debt ends. The inheritor only owes what was inherited, not his own money. He still owes the alimony. Now Maddie, on the other hand, is definitely on the hook for the theft and her "compensation" to Amy.

Yeah, the creditors can claw back that penthouse apartment from her. It generally would be seen by the courts as an attempt to avoid payment of the medical bills and any other debt the estate has. And no, the estate's debt isn't inherited either.

I think there are special pokers waiting in a warm place for anyone banking on the death of another person so that they can become wealthy.
