    Congrats on Inst. ride.... That's an important one! Realize your failure was a learning experience. In any interview, remember those words..... A learning experience, no excuses.. We are all still learning. Stay safe.

    Woaw, this was extremely informative. I’m about to do my checkride with a part 141 school. Our standards for the checkride are lower because the training overall is a lot harder.
    However, I’m very happy that your 61 and my 141 had us buy the same red oral exam book (and that you were over prepared, the best state to be in).
    I’m an avid ForeFlight user even though my 141 school requires paper flight logs, paper weight and balance, and e6b’s. I learned about binders from your video and will definitely use it to organize my flights in the future. Thank you so much for sharing this!

    i just did my sport pilot checkride, he was great, very fair and "probing" so to speak... I was a complete bag of nerves and forgot stupid answers... things like... "what do runway hold short lines look like"... i was like.... errrr... i can't remember LMAO.. he was gracious enough to allow me to draw the layout from the AFD for KDED as a visual guide and i got it. but yea... nerves are a helluva thing to get over. but the DPE himself was a great guy and would definitely use him again if i decide to move up from sport to full blown private. the funny thing is, you say about lining up the wrong runway. I DID THE SAME THING... the one runway had the runway number right on the intersection and completely confused me.

    Like you I’m looking to make a midlife career change. I’m 44 & looking to start my instrument rating training. Did you do all of your ground school first & then get flight hrs with a CFII or did you mix them both as you went along?

      I was 59 when I started my IFR training. I owned a plane so that was the easy part. I used Sheppard Air for the written test prep along w CFI in flight training and ground school assistance. I passed the written and I am now prepping for my oral and check ride w my CFI. I try to fly 2 times a week with them and while in flight we put the pieces together. Good luck with your process D

    Well done, Tom, and congrats!! Been following you for a minute; looks like we're on the same page as I'm also a Mooney owner making a mid-life career change to aviation, and just got my instrument rating in March! Might be moving to the Destin, Florida area in the next few months for better flying weather and I'll have to hit you up sometime if and when we make it out there.
    I did have one question, though: Why didn't you use your Mooney for the checkride? I bought my IFR rated Mooney (a 1976 M20C) specifically so that everything would be the same, every flight while I was doing IFR. I'm just curious why you chose (or didn't?) to use a different Mooney for your practical...
    Keep up the great videos!

    Tom Congratulations on you Satisfactory Evaluation. I just watched the video you released about the unsat! That DPE needs to be flipping burgers somewhere! I feel she had it out for you from the beginning. Putting that behind us.
    I am six minutes in to this video and I want to say as a former examiner for the ATP and Type ratings on several Corporate Jets. You offer some great advice to perspective potential failees! Just Kidding. Seriously I hope many watch this video and take your advice. Be prepared is the key as you infer. As well as leave the shovel at home answer the question and only the question, even if you know more about the subject do not offer that information.
    That was sage advice from you that I agree with.
    If the Evaluator wants to dig deeper they will ask you to do so.
    I always kept it professional! Upon entering the briefing room I outlined the events that would take place for the evaluation on a white board. We discussed what we would be doing so there were no surprises.
    And I reminded them that this was not a check it was a $$$CASH RIDE! $$$ (no fees where exchanged as I working a FAR 142 training facility. )
    I wanted to try to get them to relax. Typically they would laugh at that.
    I enjoyed teaching and Checking over years as well as flying corporate for 50 years.
    You have produced a very good video on your experience and it should serve well for others.
    I would also say I like your personal minimums, be conservative. Yes you can legally look an see at zero vis but it is not wise.
    Again congratulations well done! And one closing thought that will save you more than you think!
    Listen to your intuition!
    😁🛫
    We need to find you someone to give you a free hair cut after all you have a lot of money to this far!
    Dude seriously I am not sure what your aspirations are in aviation, I will say you would be a very good instructor if that is what you want to be. And down the road an even better DPE.

    Congrats! Random question, If you pass written with Shepard Air only, does the DPE ask about or ask for proof on other ground courses you may or may not have used? Thanks

    • @Tommyflies
      @Tommyflies  ปีที่แล้ว

      The DPE doesn’t care about any of that, just that you provide proof you passed your written exam. You’ll need a logbook endorsement to take the written though, which I believe you can get from Shepard Air. I just used my Sportys endorsement to take the test.

    For my oral exam, I explained that my personal minimums were equal to the VFR minimums because I have not yet trained or practiced in actual IMC. Don't "BS" the DPE by saying "alternate minimums" because the DPE will know that's BS.

    • @jarrettleto
      @jarrettleto ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey not sure how far along you are now but I'll give you my advice. For IR you need a lot of cross country PIC time and alao instrument time (50 and 40 hours) so I would recommend getting most of that done so you know what instrument is all about then take your written and then after you pass the written really power into check ride prep and schedule your check ride.
      Just my personal opinion that taking the written too early makes you not realize the practical application of the knowledge, but you also don't want to take it too late so just me I liked taking it in the middle and then prepping for check ride after that
