Wind Devil 9” HV Fan - A Lakewood HV-9 Clone w/ PSC Motor?! | Unboxing

  • My excitement was through the roof during the video. When Lakewood went out of business, I thought the HV-9 was gone for good and we'd never see another 9" HV fan with a PSC motor. But I was wrong! In the 2000s, there was a nearly identical clone that was sold as a direct competitor of the Lakewood HV-9, mostly commonly sold under the Hawaiian Breeze brand name. Who could’ve guessed that the clone would outlast Lakewood and still be in production today, after close to 20 years?? This Wind Devil fan still retains the feature that made the Lakewood HV-9 great: a large PSC motor with a good range in speeds! I can't believe this fan still exists, and it's absolutely amazing! It's built very well and the performance is comparable to the Lakewood HV-9. Pretty much zero major complaints so far, which is rare for me with modern fans. I might even buy a second one!

    As someone who’s used to seeing C frame shaded pole motors on 9” HV fans, that motor looks like it doesn’t belong on this fan at all, it’s just huge! I wonder why they’re still making it this way as changing to a C frame motor would be cheaper for the manufacturer in the long run, but wow is this fan a stand-out if you really know where to look

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I can’t agree more! I’m also used to the shaded pole motor 9” fans nowadays. But I’m very glad this manufacturer kept this design going even after nearly 20 years. Hopefully they’ll continue to stick around. I wish this fan was more widely known because it really deserves more recognition.

    I like the logo being tilted personally, not sure why to be honest, and wow, the design is really similar. Especially if you look at the back, it’s really identical! It’s just the switch that’s black (usually white from the Lakewood HV-9’s I’ve usually seen) and it has different shaped vents as well as some dot-like stuff going around it. It even has flexible plugs which is amazing, and a handle that you can actually grab onto. You don’t tend to see this nowadays with the cheap fans and stuff. Surprised to see that there’s more similarities as well since the specs are similar as well. This really must be a Lakewood HV-9 clone, it runs just like the Lakewood, too! But either way, it does perform good and is quiet, so I will give it that. I like how you used your Canadian flag for the performance lol. Medium and High seem really powerful. Overall, it is a good copy rather than a poorly made copy. So, wow. That is not a bad fan at all!

      Fully agreeing to the points you made! Definitely the closest clone I’ve ever seen to the original Lakewood HV-9, with a well executed design.
      The flag was the nearest thing within my reach to use as a “wind tester.” It’s surprisingly effective lol!

    I hope this does not have the same blade hub separation issue that my Hawaiian Breeze model does. I ended up replacing the blades with a translucent plastic set from eBay.

      @TheSuperFanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohh I didn’t realize that was what happened to your Hawaiian Breeze when you mentioned the blades broke. I hope the blade design was revised to prevent that. Or perhaps it was a defect? I’ll definitely keep an eye on these blades though.

    This specific model is no longer available.
    There are currently two different models of the Wind Devil 9 available. One has black blades and the other has silver blades. Both of those have the switch on the front.
    Do any of those have a PSC motor?

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thing I’ve noticed with these Wind Devil branded products is that the stock photos are not always accurate to the actual products. The photos you’re referring to of the fan with silver and black blades appear to be 12” and 18” models. The 12” fan was discontinued long ago, and the 18” fan is a larger model that is still sold. As far as I can tell, this 9” fan is still available, and it should still have a PSC motor (unless the manufacturer recently made changes but I doubt it).

    C frame motors sit in the way of the airflow that with a psc motor the air don't got to move around it

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s a good point. I’ve also noticed that most 9” HV fans with c-frame motors don’t have very good ventilation at the back, which would certainly hinder the fan’s performance and also the motor’s cooling ability.

    I can't believe you can oil the rear bearing from the outside! Wow! That hazy finish of the outermost ring of both guards is kind of like how the new Air Queen 9154 is, although probably not quite as bad. These things have been all over the place for years under various store names like Climate Keeper and Comfort Zone and Impress, but I think most have the shaded pole motors, so this one would certainly be the way to go. Never hurts to throw some extra oil in there when it comes to today's fans, but I think the bearing noise might go away once they break in somewhat.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right? It's basically the HV-9 resurrected by another manufacturer, and I was amazed that they still kept the PSC motor and all. I have a couple of those shaded-pole 9" HV fans, and while they're decent, they tend to rely on speed to move a lot of air, and they run hottttt. You're right, the bearings did get a bit quieter after just running it. I'll probably oil the bearings anyways but I also have a feeling they will quiet down as they break in.

    • @TheSuperFanMan
      @TheSuperFanMan  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! I don’t understand why manufacturers don’t use proper grub screw that sits flush against the hub. I imagine grub screws would be even cheaper than regular screws since they’re smaller.

      I actually haven’t oiled it yet, but I would use my go-to oil: the ZoomSpout multi-purpose oil. It might be a while before I find time to disassemble and oil this particular fan, but here is a video I posted recently of a fan with similar construction, just larger. The motor should come apart in a similar fashion and the oiling process is the same. th-cam.com/video/ydam2wCd-e8/w-d-xo.html

      @@TheSuperFanMan Thank you! I have my moms old Lakewood large table fan that worked great up until the other day. Now it makes a horrible noise when you first turn it on and its trying to gain speed. So I quickly unplugged it. Going to take front off and clean blades.
