EVERYTHING About Academics At MIT, MANIPAL

  • Hi! I’m Saranya Ghosh, a third year student at MIT, Manipal and in this video, I’ll be detailing about all things academics at my college.
    Grading: We are graded on a bell curve, so it’s relative grading. Theory is always relative grading and up until last semester I used to believe that labs had absolute grading, but some professors say that even that is relative graded to a certain point. It’s a little ambiguous to figure out the exact cutoffs for exact letter grades, but the way to get to a 10 pointer remains pretty much the same. Each course has a certain number of credits assigned to it. For theory courses, 3 credit subjects will have 3 1-hour long classes and 4 credit subjects are 4 hour long classes. Labs are always 2 and a half hours once per week, regardless of the credits, for the CS related branches, they can differ for core ones. Your CGPA is affected by the number of credits, so when a lot of first years panic about workshop or engineering graphics, I tell them to relax and take it easy because they’re just 1 credit labs, even if you get a C or D in one of them, it won’t be the end of the world. Focus mainly on the 3 or 4 credit subjects, get as high of a grade in them as possible. They are what take or grade up or down by the greatest margin. Just to give you a comparison, getting an A from an E in a one credit lab requires a lot of effort, but it will take your grade higher equivalent to getting a B from a C in a 4 credit subject, which is a lot easier.
    I have mentioned in my curriculum videos about passing marks. In lab, 40 is passing. 40 to 50 is E. 50 to 60 is a D. 60 to 70 is a C. 70 to 80 is a B, 80 to 90 is an A and then above 90, it’s an A+. For theory, there’s no clear cutoff like that. If a subject is very difficult, then 75 could get you an easy A, but in an easy course, that may not be enough for even a B. 36 is the passing always, according to the professors the passing marks varies from course to course but we all know that’s not true. They cannot fail everyone. You have to get minimum an 18 in the endsem and then 36 overall or whatever the academic section deems as passing, adding up endsem and internal marks. So even if you have a 30 in your internals but a 15 in your endsem, you won’t pass. You’ll still have to give the makeups. That rarely happens though, if your internals are above 30, the chances of you getting an F are miniscule. If you have a 15 internally, then an 18 in the endsems will not suffice, a 20 plus score would be the bare minimum. What happens if you fail? You have two options, either apply for re-evaluation or appear for the makeups. You get the opportunity to bump up your grade to a C at max, it’s capped at a C unless you weren’t able to take the endsems and have an approved medical reason. Otherwise an F mostly gets you to an E or a D in reval if you’d genuinely messed up. There are a lot more nuances to this which you’ll understand after spending a couple of semesters in the college. What happens if you fail the makeups as well? You’ll have to re-register for the course, assuming that the failing grade is final and after you’ve tried submitting it for re-evaluation.
    *-Getting Good Grades*
    Now, I may not be the most perfect student to advise you about good grades because mine aren’t especially great but regardless but I’ll be sharing my view points too because a lot of people will benefit from my mistakes and hopefully, not repeat them. Three points follow. You'll have to watch the actual video for this one :)

    Disclaimer: The re-evaluation process has been scrapped for now. I don't know if they'll re-instate it or just make this new system permanent. Earlier, the results were published and only if you submitted your paper for reval, you could go to the campus and see your papers to change your grade. But now, this option is available for everyone so the viewing takes place a couple of weeks after the endsems, before the result declaration. So if you fail in the endsems, you will have to appear for the makeups, there's no hope for getting it cleared with the reval :/. (The paper viewing still remains an offline-only procedure)
    Thanks for watching! Let me know your thoughts :)

    This is the same structure in nit trichy but you will have 2 cts ,2assignment /mcq test/ open book test . It is not always 50 for endsem it could be anywhere between (30-50).but nice to hear ❤

    Afternoon sis , i wish to know , do we learn c++ in the first year of college , or later years in the college , or do we have to learn them seperately? (Assume cs or cs related)

    • @saranyaghosh2003
      @saranyaghosh2003  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'll have C in your first year. DSA was taught to us in C++ but for yall it might be in C only. Learning it on your own is way faster so that you can start Leetcoding.

    • @akshithanoop
      @akshithanoop หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      What is leetcoding? Never heard of it till now. Also , is it worth starting coding as early as possible? Can I trust freecodecamp as a platform to learn any programming language / web development from?

    • @saranyaghosh2003
      @saranyaghosh2003  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Leetcode is a platform where you can practice coding problems, which are asked in SDE interviews.
      Freecodecamp is one of the biggest, most reliable sources to learn to code. There are tons of other channels and resources as well, this was just a suggestion. Feel free go explore and get to know all the other channels as well and find out what suits you the best.

    Can you tell something about MET and what type of exam it is and where to give and how to enroll and difficulty level along with syllabus and yes are cbse board marks seen for admission?

    • @saranyaghosh2003
      @saranyaghosh2003  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      MET is pretty easy, the pattern is almost like BITSAT, just no negative marking. I think I've covered a little bit about it in my engineering exams video.
      You can enroll yourself on the official university website.
      Syllabus and all is exactly like JEE and all the other entrance exams.
      There's a criteria for 75 percent in boards iirc.

    Are there droppers in manipal & do people judge them ?

    • @saranyaghosh2003
      @saranyaghosh2003  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are quite a few of them.
      Nope, no one judges anyone. It's a level ground once you enter college. No cares about your accomplishments before college, it's just what you do after, matters.

    Can a 87 jee percentiler score good branch in mit

    • @saranyaghosh2003
      @saranyaghosh2003  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Of course! JEE scores have no correlation with MIT branches. I've seen people get CSE without even giving JEE and some failing to clear the cutoffs even after preparing rigorously. It all depends on how well you do on the day of the test. All the best! :)
