Is it fear of new and exotic diseases? Because again, even if homosexuality were wiped out and aids was eradicated then we would still have thousands of other ailments just as bad and even worse. +Ian I dont think that's right. Freedom isnt the right to do what you ought to do. "Freedom is the right to choose what you want to do" (with no outside expectations such as ought or should) Its the bit in brackets that causes problems with the idea of freedom for everyone. There are so many of us that we would almost instantly end up stepping on others toes. As our population grows our freedoms are restricted simply because freedom is finite to us based on both time constraints and space constraints. Then we top the whole situation off by taking what freedom we do have and chopping bits off based on the desires of different generalized sections of society. We vary the postion on what is ok to do and what is not ok to do. It chops and changes from country to state to generation to the sex of those who make the rules. Not only that but we place methods of control on many paths to restrict who can take them. Education is a finacial minefield as is every other bloody thing in modern society. I suppose it really depends on your definition. true freedom which is impossible for us to have due to physical laws and constraints. The freedom which we have right now, which is a type of illusionary freedom or the freedom to shut the f*** up and do what we are told. (and in days long past when the population was considerably lower there was the freedom to just f*** off and find a quiet place to live by yourself how you wanted)
ERM, my point was to say that your statement is not true. Freedom isn't the right to do "what you ought to do". Anyway, " What you ought to do" is an expectation of others/self and not a forced order or something you are being pushed into doing therefore it is not an oxymoron either. The expectation that has been added onto this statement of freedom doesn't create any type of paradox
Paul spoke of the way Christians should conduct themselves when discussing doctrine. I opened my Bible to find a verse I recalled and saw instead another verse. This was a complete coincidence. The first line I saw was in Paul's letter to Titus. It said, "To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men." What I was looking for was James 3:13-18 "Who is a wise man...? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom...The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated [pled for], full of mercy...the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." Donohue is an embarrassment to Catholicism and wholly alien to the doctrine of Christianity.
Mike Erik What is more emblematic of that contradiction than the jewel-encrusted crucifix. The Pope (i.e. Papa, Father) moves in the public spaces with a garish entourage of fawning ambitious cardinals, hailed as he is conveyed from throne to throne, where men kneel to kiss his ring. While the words of Jesus remain in Matthew 23, "But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments. And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets..." Jesus added, "And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
I remember being told around the age of nine that AIDS was a punishment for sin. I didn't know much about the disease other than it being fatal. I was unaware that thousands of people were dying every day in Africa, many of whom were children, and I imagine so was he. I heard similar remarks about Katrina as well, by that time I was old enough to call people out on their BS.
Freedom is the right to do what you're told to do. Yep. Bam. That's just, whoo! If I flip open the dictionary to freedom that's exactly what it's gonna say. Word for word. WORD. FOR. WORD. *slams head into table*
I've heard about this guy before, but only in these past couple of months have I really started to look at what he says. He's quickly becoming an idol of mine, for sure. I only hope that I can live up to even a quarter of this man's greatness. I hope he found peace in his final days.
How funny that Donohue invokes the faith of Dennie Hastert at a forum against homosexuality Hastert who set up his chair in the boys shower room so he could ogle his wrestlers and then later bugger them in his office. The irony is deep.
Angry rhetoric like this (as opposed to hitchens) is never gonna move us on. What a mess it would be if we allowed this kind of leadership to help us "progress".
As both a gay man and as an avid studier and believer in Scriptures from all over the world, from Taoist Scriptures to Gnostic Scriptures, I must say that I appreciate Christopher Hithcens as a voice of calm reason. I am glad that he existed, and I genuinely admire his outspoken frankness.
+Poseidon63 nothing wrong with the bible old boy. It's a bloddy good read. A nice fairy tale about a land with magic and wars and armies. Thrilling I tell you... Although, maybe there was a bit too much flowery language. So many people begatting or begetting. And yeah, it gets kinda flaky towards the end. What starts off as a nice story about a bored old fella who made some toys to entertain himself ends up being akind of twisted horror by the end when he makes two massive armies and smashes them together in mayhem. And I bet the story had a btter ending if they hadnt kept messing around and rewritting it, adding bits in and taking them out. Oh yeah, dont knock the Bible. It's worth a read. I will however suggest that the use to which the Bible has been put over the years has been truly horrendous. Not to mention all the other wonderful tales that have been taken up by these organizations (I dont like calling them religions. it feels like im calling a wolf a sheep)
Poseidon63 no probs buddy. I'll be honest with you but im glad it even makes sense if i'm honest seeing as it's 3AM and I've been up for well over 24 hours now in a bit of a mania watching Hitchens and Dawkins dismiss idiots crazy ideas in ever more eloquent and often heated tirades.
"The cultural clock is ticking and its not going your way!" Can we use this as the intro to any public appearance by Bill. Especially when a new country or US state legitimises gay rights.
The link to the full debate is sadly no longer working. Hitchens was magnificent, he took debate and made it a passionate art form. A true genius, of the likes is greatly needed today to help stop the de-evolution of intelligence we currently see. I don't hero worship people but I come very close to doing so with Hitchens.
*THE MISUSE OF THE WORD BIGOT* The misuse of the word "bigot" never ceases to amaze me. There was a time when being a bigot meant someone who believed no one had a right to hold to an opinion unless it was in agreement with their own. Today people misuse it to mean ANYONE who disagrees with them is a bigot. Bigotry does not mean "to disagree". It means believing "you have no RIGHT to disagree." "Tolerance" does NOT infer agreement. As a Christian I disagree with homosexuality but I believe they have every right to believe in homosexuality. This does NOT make me a bigot. If it does then anyone who disagrees with polygamy , bestiality , incest is ALSO a BIGOT. It seems many in the pro gay side use the word "bigot" not to emphasize a truth but to shut up and silence any criticism. A strategy radical liberals and the pro gay lobby are well known for. The IRONY here of course is that many of the true bigots are those that INSIST that I have no *RIGHT* to believe homosexuality is wrong !
I really like CH and I wish he were still alive...well, alive in the sense that most of us understand or define it, but his videos will live on forever so there's no getting rid of his great views
Wow. Donahue lifts up not only Catholic priests, but also DENNY HASTERT as moral models. He even pointed out that HASTERT WAS A WRESTLING COACH. This is what being on the wrong side of history looks like.
I believe that homosexual acts are immoral myself, but jeering someone like that for believing otherwise is unacceptable (same goes for people who jeer people for holding my position). People who do that kind of crap need to be kicked out so civilized debate can continue.
Christoper, you are a moron. You have opinions based on nothing more than your own prejudices. You are unaware and ignorant of science. And self satisfied with your empty head.
+Christopher Johnson Homosexuality is natural and common among mammals. It is probably just nature's way of controlling population growth and should be acceptable in all civilised societies. I am 100% heterosexual so I don't have an axe to grind here and I have friends of both sexes that are gay and not being a Christian I treat them with exactly the same respect as heterosexuals. Those who believe it is immoral seem to think that one's sexuality is a choice and not something that is instinctive. I certainly didn't choose to be heterosexual because when I reached puberty I just started to fancy women big time so logically it must be the same for gay people. I read and hear media reports of gay people suffering extremely violent physical attacks and it doesn't help when religious groups call being gay immoral and perverted. In Leviticus, God calls for gay people to be put to death, oh and by the way, thou shalt not kill! Just one of the many bible contradictions I have come across.
Poofax56 If you are going to accept evolution (as I do too), you will have to believe that ALL human behavior, at least all human behavior intrinsic to us (pride, anger, even things like rape), has some kind of evolutionary reason to be here. That does not mean they are morally acceptable however. Same thing with homosexuality occurring in other species- just because other species practice something doesn't make it moral.
To believe in something INVISABLE is an act of unintelligence, blind and illogical, why do we call people who believe in something INVISABLE, as believers???? When in reality they are incredibly unintelligent, instead we should call them the unintelligents, or the incredibly stupid......
Man! Hitchens absolutely nails it every, single time. Why? Because he reads! he researches, he finds out 'facts' and no1 can argue with 'facts'. THAT is why C.Hitchens was sooooo a forminable adversary. Such a shame he passed away soooo soon cuz.. this world needs more like C.Hitchens not less!!
Regarding Bill Donohue's triumphant assertion that the tide is turning his way........I wonder if the result of the Irish referendum is biting him on the ass?
At about 6:50 Donahue goes on to praise Denny Hastert the high school wrestling coach. We all now know what kind of high school wrestling coach Hastert turned out to be.
At 7:05 Donahue cites Dennis Hastert! As in, the Dennis Hastert who in 2015 has been indicted for paying hush money to a young student some thirty years ago for gross sexual misconduct. Incredible.
I don't agree with Christopher on everything, but I admire him greatly. He was a great debater and speaker. May his ashes be re-born as something beautiful.
The logic of Bill Donahue - An all-powerful creator created mankind in his image, giving him appetites and bodily desires and then commanded his creation not to satisfy these appetites and desires rather than actually creating them without appetites and bodily desires.
In this debate, if you find the rest of it, Donohue says the media hates religion. Then, here, he says they all love Mother Theresa because she's holy.
I take a pride and pleasure in the fact that secular rationalists tend to speak in measured tones yet the religious tend to be mired in lies, phlegm and volume over substance.
When people say that debating religion is pointless, they should be directed to videos like this. The debate has come a long way since then. Did Donohue even had a point? All he did was celebrate the church's power and condemn those who are not slaves to it. Today's christian debaters don't have a better case, but we have them trying. "Kneel infidels" doesn't fly anymore. The discussion has turned into a matter of arguments and evidence.
Hahaha. Dennis Hastert. Sweet irony. It could have only gotten better if he mentioned Senator Larry Craig and Pastor Ted Haggard as champions against deviant sexual appetite.
I don't want to do a big attack on Hitchens because I'm really not that offended by him, but I do think he probably lived the best of a Christian lifestyle (birthdays; anniversaries; Easter and Christmas), while simultaneously attacking everything Christianity stands for. In fact, I think a lot of Atheists are like this. They tear Christianity into threads, without stopping to look at just how Christian their own lives are in reality.
Ian Avalis Are you not familiar with the story of Genesis? God created the world in 6 days, and then on the 7th day, He rested. Our entire culture is built around this premise; i.e, the notion of a weekend and the idea that mankind is not supposed to work itself to death. You can see for yourself what happens in Communist countries where Christianity has been suppressed; people simply work themselves to death for the state. In Pagan times, there were slaves of the state that were also worked to death (and nobody saw a problem with it) not to mention children put to work, virgins sacrificed, animals sacrificed, etc. Just because there may be similarities between the dates of yearly celebrations, for example, does not negate the fact that Christianity changed western culture entirely. Yes; the solar system was named after the Roman gods and in many ways our world is still Roman, but we no longer worship at the feet of Venus, or equate our leaders (emperors) to the great Jupiter. Christianity taught us that no man is to be equated with God (or, a god) and as a result, we take our leaders with a grain of salt and question them constantly (even the Pope is not above questioning). This mentality puts all mortal men on an equal par, and means that all men (and women, obviously) are entitled to rest at the end of the week and to celebrate the birth of their Lord at the end of the year.
Alison Adams Yeah, I love that Genesis story: God created the world in six days and on the seventh he rested. Ha! He's powerful beyond all reason and understanding, yet he had to rest?? Toiled for six days then he's pooped!
brangwen1 I copied this from Wikipedia: The present-day concept of the weekend first arose from the Jewish Sabbath. The Christian Sabbath was just one day each week, but the preceding day (the Jewish Sabbath) came to be taken as a holiday as well in the twentieth century. This shift has been accompanied by a reduction in the total number of hours worked per week, following changes in employer expectations. Proposals have continued to be put forward for further reductions in the number of days or hours worked per week, on the basis of predicted social and economic benefits.

Love his summary of twisted doctrine! "I do not believe that I was created sick and commanded to be well".
5:36 Catholic church loses. Only a Sith deals in absolutes...
+Hit “Restart” Now Of course, that is an absolute statement.
love you hitch. we all miss you so much. its so nice seeing you way before your time fighting for us after thousands of years of violent discrimination from tyrannical religious people.
Donahue name dropped Dennys Hastert! ahahahahahaha!!!!!
That caught my ear too. He emphatically mentioned his name
I love the beginning of this 😂
Eternal memory, Mr. Hitchens.
What is the point in making a video with the end missing?
TH-cam only allows a limit time length and as my title suggests I was mostly interested in the first part of the video!!
If your that bothered how's about not being lazy and clicking the link I supplied for the whole debate????
Paul Gee substance
DNA Electronics The full video is unavilable at that link

I think Bill Oh Oh'Donahue wanted to hug Hitchens in the end but asked this bit to be edited out.

'Freedom is the right to do what you ought to do' An oxymoron if I've heard one
"Of course we have free will. We have no choice but to have it."
-Christopher Hitchens paraphrasing Isaac Bashevis Singer
+Bob Leonheart Well yes that was my point. I said that statement was an oxymoron
+Bob Leonheart What a boring man you must be
Rest in peace Christopher. You were a great man
Classic Hitchslap 1:50
15 seconds in and Hitchens already wrecked the haters in the room!
Freedom is the right to do what you "ought to" do? That's perverse
What a level-headed, smart man. He doesn't even speak about morality, it's more about logic and reason.
Wow this Bill guy is truly insane
the first 3 minutes are a fucking knockout
Paul spoke of the way Christians should conduct themselves when discussing doctrine. I opened my Bible to find a verse I recalled and saw instead another verse. This was a complete coincidence. The first line I saw was in Paul's letter to Titus.
It said, "To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, showing all meekness unto all men."
What I was looking for was James 3:13-18 "Who is a wise man...? Let him show out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom...The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated [pled for], full of mercy...the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace."
Donohue is an embarrassment to Catholicism and wholly alien to the doctrine of Christianity.
Catholicism is very self contradictory, so one can justify just about any behavior.
And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets..."
Jesus added, "And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven."
Christianity is an embarrassment to humanity.
I miss him so much. We need him now more than ever.
Bill O'Reilly. Sean Hannity. Bill Donohue; As a fairly open minded Irish guy I really hope that these are all Swedish names.
Irish names but they are purely American.
Bill Donohue is the 21st century's chief inquisitor for The Catholic Church. Torquemada would be very proud of Bill Donohue.
I miss this man.
"If you can't live with it, I think you're the poorer" is the most British put down of all time.
Adam Burton yeah!
What year was this?
2000
I love how Bill Donahue praises Dennis Hastert.
@alison adams You do know that those 'Christian' holidays were adopted from Pagan holidays right?
Then the Easter bunny wasnt created by god?
I've heard about this guy before, but only in these past couple of months have I really started to look at what he says. He's quickly becoming an idol of mine, for sure. I only hope that I can live up to even a quarter of this man's greatness. I hope he found peace in his final days.
How funny that Donohue invokes the faith of Dennie Hastert at a forum against homosexuality Hastert who set up his chair in the boys shower room so he could ogle his wrestlers and then later bugger them in his office. The irony is deep.
www.usatoday.com/story/news/2016/04/27/ex-speaker-dennis-hastert-faces-sentencing-chicago/83584440/
This is just unbelievable how much power a man can hold. Not for himself, but for the truth he believes in.
wow...bill donohue came straight from the middle ages to tell us this nonsense :D
Angry rhetoric like this (as opposed to hitchens) is never gonna move us on. What a mess it would be if we allowed this kind of leadership to help us "progress".
The cultural clock is ticking, Donohue, and it is going our way.
Thanks, bye.
"Freedom is the right to do what you ought to do"??? What the hell? This is spitting on any logic thought anybody ever had....
As soon as Bill Donohue started talking I felt an uncontrollable urge to vomit.
God, the longest game of hide and seek the world has ever seen, and he's never been found yet.
The bible, the most immoral book ever written.
Bob Leonheart
Brilliant post, thanks.
Poseidon63
no probs buddy. I'll be honest with you but im glad it even makes sense if i'm honest seeing as it's 3AM and I've been up for well over 24 hours now in a bit of a mania watching Hitchens and Dawkins dismiss idiots crazy ideas in ever more eloquent and often heated tirades.
Bob Leonheart
It's 3 am here in the UK as well where are you.
yeah, I'm Scottish.
"The cultural clock is ticking and its not going your way!" Can we use this as the intro to any public appearance by Bill. Especially when a new country or US state legitimises gay rights.
I love this guy
The link to the full debate is sadly no longer working. Hitchens was magnificent, he took debate and made it a passionate art form. A true genius, of the likes is greatly needed today to help stop the de-evolution of intelligence we currently see. I don't hero worship people but I come very close to doing so with Hitchens.
*THE MISUSE OF THE WORD BIGOT*
The misuse of the word "bigot" never ceases to amaze me. There was a time when being a bigot meant someone who believed no one had a right to hold to an opinion unless it was in agreement with their own.
Today people misuse it to mean ANYONE who disagrees with them is a bigot. Bigotry does not mean "to disagree". It means believing "you have no RIGHT to disagree."
"Tolerance" does NOT infer agreement.
+BloodOfYeshuaMessiah I see, so ur just an ass.
Jon Smith
Thanks for making my point !
BloodOfYeshuaMessiah Ur point had nothing to do with me thinking u are an ass. I think it is u that is misusing the word bigot, b/cu are one.
Jon Smith
In your liberal word - NOBODY is allowed to disagree with you.
Thank you again for so vividly making my point !
BloodOfYeshuaMessiah No, u can disagree. Im going to call u an ass for it though, then u will tell me I cannot say that.
I really like CH and I wish he were still alive...well, alive in the sense that most of us understand or define it, but his videos will live on forever so there's no getting rid of his great views
Did I miss something? When was God against abortion?
Isaac Foster Of course! God was peaceful and NEVER killed anyone in the Bible
except infidels
rtel123 Well duh he's an all loving god
I have spent hours listening to Hitchens, but I just realized that I love to watch him listen as well.
bill ur scary I think you would kill if told to ...
Wow. Donahue lifts up not only Catholic priests, but also DENNY HASTERT as moral models. He even pointed out that HASTERT WAS A WRESTLING COACH. This is what being on the wrong side of history looks like.
Glad someone else noticed this.
Roy Chefets Geez, do you know a damn thing about me that would support that conclusion?
+Christopher Johnson
Homosexuality is natural and common among mammals.
I will jeer you for being intolerant, tolerance is NOT tolerating intolerance.
Donohue displays all the love, warmth and Christian compassion of a rattlesnake.😖
The world has lost a great intellectual, you are missed Mr. Hitchens.
To believe in something INVISABLE is an act of unintelligence, blind and illogical, why do we call people who believe in something INVISABLE, as believers???? When in reality they are incredibly unintelligent, instead we should call them the unintelligents, or the incredibly stupid......
Beautiful, loving and caring for his ailing, suffering brothers and sisters. Beautiful christian relativism...
Extra irony in Donohue mentioning Hastert, given the revelations of his conduct with kids.
Regarding Bill Donohue's triumphant assertion that the tide is turning his way........I wonder if the result of the Irish referendum is biting him on the ass?
tony bennett LOL , wasn't that a fabulous day? LOL I bet Donahue's face was beet red that day.
Incredible.
William Lane.
The right to do what you "ought," to do? Who determines what "ought," to be done? The CC? Pulease.
I don't agree with Christopher on everything, but I admire him greatly. He was a great debater and speaker. May his ashes be re-born as something beautiful.
Blessed be your noble heart and soul, Christopher Hitchens, wherever you are , dear!!!
A profound beauty! Quite an objective, and eloquent, thinker!
I take a pride and pleasure in the fact that secular rationalists tend to speak in measured tones yet the religious tend to be mired in lies, phlegm and volume over substance.
I can't believe people used to think this way, I mean i know not everyone is ok with homosexuals yet but this is something else
Damn, we've come far, I'm amazed
When people say that debating religion is pointless, they should be directed to videos like this. The debate has come a long way since then. Did Donohue even had a point? All he did was celebrate the church's power and condemn those who are not slaves to it. Today's christian debaters don't have a better case, but we have them trying. "Kneel infidels" doesn't fly anymore. The discussion has turned into a matter of arguments and evidence.
If you gave this fool, Donohue, an enema, you could bury him in a matchbox.
Alison Adams Why do we have 2 days of weekend and not one then?
Alison Adams you're a stupid illogical dumb dumb and astoundingly almost everything you have written is laughably untrue
Alison Adams Yeah, I love that Genesis story: God created the world in six days and on the seventh he rested. Ha! He's powerful beyond all reason and understanding, yet he had to rest?? Toiled for six days then he's pooped!
brangwen1 I copied this from Wikipedia:
The present-day concept of the weekend first arose from the Jewish Sabbath.
