    "Art is a process, at least for it's creators, by which we invent ourselves in the act of creation. If we don't grow every time we create a new piece of art, then we're no longer artists."
    This is something I've come to realize myself just weeks ago. I was so glad to hear it from the lips of a seasoned professional composer I had to rewind the video to hear it again. Thank you, Thomas. Your videos really give me the courage and strength to keep going.

    Thomas, orchestration online, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your commitment to help others achieve their dreams. Universities need people like you. I recently found you and thought about my commitment to orchestration. You have been a true inspiration. I studied music, my father was a musician, I grew up around music and clueless to sports. I used to copy my father when he was orchestrating, and learned my notes before my ABC. My dreams of becoming a professional musician, orchestrator, conductor are now just a dream. I have a degree in clinical lab specialty and medicine. It's a long story. But my dreams of being a musician never left me. I have intuitively always study scores listened to them; to the point of memorizing every instrument part. Unfortunately, I suffered a brain injury some 9 years ago just as I was accepted to do a masters degree in music. Yes! I actually went back to school to finished a bachelor degree in music I had not completed, applied and was accepted to Belmont University. I have now lost a lot of what I had learned. I'm a high functioning stroke person. I can drive, still do a lot of my work with some limitations, but my ability to learn fast and keep a rigorous schedule is not possible. I will join and take your classes despite my limitations. I will be a slow learner, and I will have to be very patient with myself. But I will do my best to participate in the 2019 orchestration challenge. I will have lots of questions, so bear with me. I was told this would be a good therapy for my continuous recovery, and emotional healing. I'm 50, and I want to write me my own funeral requium. Thank you. Special Ed.

    I discovered this series of videos late - both late in their release dates and late in my life. These are things I should have been learning fifty years ago. Better I learn it now than never learning it. I'm looking forward to watching all the other videos.

    Art is where Numinous has kissed Phenomena.
    As in Heaven, so on Earth, else we're just recycling.
    As Mathematics is to Science, so Music is to Art.
    This was a great intro to Orchestration. Feels like I was listening to a friend. I will be continuing to watch your videos. I'm a visual artist, but have a fascination in music, and believe that the creative principles are metaphysical, transcending all activities.
    Thanks to JJay Berthume for mentioning your channel.

      Don't you worry one bit about your age or your place in history. Just go compose some music, and in the composing, always grow and find out something new about yourself.

    Thomas, these are great! I found you through Garrett Hope. I wish I'd seen these 10 years ago when I began my professional life as a composer - one with a day job - it's been a long journey, and I'm probably at a semi-professional level at this point. I've ditched the day job, and have focused on skill, community and portfolio building. Thank you!!

    Though it is an older one, I *needed* this video today. Thomas, your voice, your humor, your intuitive sense, and the clarity of your instruction is a breath of fresh air. What the composer's life looks like? Metered chaos in 5/8 time--a grisly, irregular period or sentence structure, often with an unstable cadence. Laundry spilling over the hamper because the transition *must* be perfected before the housework. When I start to wonder why I bother stressing myself out, I find great comfort and encouragement in the community you've so painstakingly created, for our mutual benefit. Thank you. I mean, really, THANK YOU.

    Tough conversation between Maurice Ravel and Paul Wittgenstein about the piano concerto for the left hand, after the latter discovered the score Ravel did compose for him:
    Wittgenstein : Believe me, I am an old pianist, it won't sound !
    Ravel : Believe me, I am an old orchestrator, it will !

    Thank you so much for this series - I've learned more practical information about the craft in an hour than I have in 10 years! One thing that intrigues me .... you're obviously an accomplished composer with decades of experience but, do you still find it difficult to compose new pieces? Does it get any easier, or more difficult? Thank you again.

    • @OrchestrationOnline
      @OrchestrationOnline  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Graeme Hindmarsh Hi Graeme! I think it's always difficult, but the way it feels difficult changes. Ideas come easy after a while and then craft makes the shaping of those ideas easier - but the scope of their conception tends to grow with your expectations and maturity. So it always feels like you're just catching up.

    Thank you so much, Mr. Goss.
    Orchestral music acts as a means of existence to my sensitive and shy character. I thank you immensely for imparting your knowledge and wisdom of this wonderful craft and to the fantastic community you have gathered.
    As a self-taught musician and aspiring composer, I am fearful and uncertain of what the future holds for myself and others. But you have given me an ember of hope with which I dream that we, the new generation, will ignite into a passionate fire.
    So again, I wholeheartedly thank you.
    Side question: What do you use to create the black and white illustrations?

    Hey Thomas! What a great and inspiring video, really put things into perspective. I just have a question: as being a young composer and orchestrator, what are some ways that I can develop my own original style with my music?
    Thanks!

    • @OrchestrationOnline
      @OrchestrationOnline  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Zane Lowry You have to compose quite a bit until you find your own voice. Keep at it. Your first few pieces will show your influences, but you'll start to see a thread of what sounds like you and not them. It took me a long time, so be patient.
