- The history of the Royal Ballet begins here, in Angkor, the former capital of the Khmer Empire, founded in the 9th century AD.
The Apsara dancers lived in heaven with the gods. One thousand years ago, King Khumba, the legendary founder of the kingdom, fell in love with one of them. Charmed, the dancer came down to earth and became the Princess Mera. She then taught the secrets of the celestial dance to mortals.
Over the centuries, a link of divine beauty was woven between the figure of the King and the dance that fell from the heavens. The Royal Ballet was created from the love of art and power.

- Khmer dance since the past is so smooth and attractive with full meaning of hand gestures of planting, growing, flower, fruit and circle.
- Thai dance is so faster than this since the past but nowadays we can observe that a bit slower than before. However we don’t know the meaning of hand gestures.

When they see the dance performance in Khmer with the same song and language by Khmer people. When they visit Thai they see a different Apsara dance and doesn't speak the same language . Not sure why Thai people are getting so riled up. The legend of the Apsaras, the clothing, the dancing, the poses are literally carved into the walls of Angkor Wat. The legend of the monkey god is also prevalent in many cultures. Stories and myths get shared over centuries and interpreted in different ways, why get so mad over it? Is India coming into the comments to start a flame war? Hinduism was the earliest religion the Angkorian civilization after all.

It's Khmer dance, if you want to know all you have to do is ask all the dancer what county are they from and what dance are they performing. Is it a Thai dance or a Khmer dance. Don't just record and say what ever you want. Give credit to what it due. Ask the dancer I bet you it's Khmer. Wow those people are Khmer and you call them Thai.
People have asked and interviews with palace dancers, teachers and the late Great Princess Buppha Devi, they confirmed the Cambodian palace dances were heavily influenced by Thai dance, with Thai costumes and songs, and most important of all, with Thai dance instructors sometimes being loaned to the Cambodian Royal Court by the Thai Royal Court and sometimes with Cambodian Royal dancers going to study at the Thai Royal Court.
The dances of the Cambodian Royal have been adapted to Cambodian tastes, so they are not Thai, but they are heavily based on Thai classical Royal Court Dance traditions. Unfortunately the Ancient Apsara dance of the Khmer Empire had long been lost, the Apsara dance of today is adapted from Thai dance style.
To the experience eyes, it is clear that this is a Khmer dance style. But the present Khmer dance are based off of Thai court cultures dance as Cambodia was once a vassal state of Thailand and prices and kings were raised in Thai courts before crowned king in Cambodia. So all the court cultures were all adapted from Thai royal court. It’s nationalisms that is fueling the argument of who came up with what. In some respect, both cultures influence each other and that is true globally.

I think the countries of Thailand and Cambodia have the same cultural issues as Indonesia and Malaysia, and they have a lot in common with each other because of the same history and interbreeding.
All of this is the result of one common thread of history between the two countries, but it must bring us together from one country to another
The Apsara dance is quite similair to Indonesian Javanese dance - Bedaya Ketawang. They are both very classic and mystical.

I’m sure you’ve probably listen to the late HRH Bupadevi saying on film that Thai dancers and teachers were brought to the Cambodian royal court to teach the dances. The songs that were sung were in Thai but later were change to suit the Khmer audience.( You can find the video on TH-cam) . Of course because you’ve done such an extensive research, you’d know that Cambodia was a Thai vassal state for almost 400 years. Princess were raised in Thai royal court, Ang Duong and Ang Eng both lived in Bangkok where they obviously absorbed Thai culture. When they crowned king of Cambodia, Thai court culture is brought to Cambodian court. But it’s obvious your comment had other intention and that intention was more NATIONALISM more than academic in nature.
