      Why do the swap if you ger torque loss?

      Because with the right mods you regain the torque, and the power increase is more than the torque loss.

      also, not sure if anyone has used it, but kasselperformance has a m50 manifold kit for like 150 bucks and has a tune bundled with it for 384 bucks. anyone used it? opinions? I'm looking at it and might get it to replace my dinan tune (328is m sport)

    I absolutely 100% agree with you that there is a major opening up in the higher rpm, I definitely notice that the rpms do not taper off and slow down, it actually increases from 5000 to 6000 rpm.

    Did this to my S52 M Roadster about 12 years ago. My used M50 manifold cost me $50 delivered on Ebay! Shipping was alot cheeper back then. Installed myself over the weekend. Didn't buy anything else, just used a modification guide I found on line. Best thing I ever did, to any car. For the unaware, the single vanos has 2 positions and turns around 3400rpm. With the m50 manifold the motor is a little soft but progressive below the change. Its when the cam turns, the real difference begins. With the s52 manifold, the motor comes on hard, the tq spikes to a peak @3600rpm, continues to pull to 5k or so, before sounding like it's going to explode as the small runners choke the motor. Some people love the tq hit, the midrange power especially if you are a city driver and like to drag from light to light. But, I live for the windy road and even moved to the mnts(I ride also). Driven in the mnts w/the s52 manifold, when the vanos turns, the tq spike in 2nd or 3rd gear can be a handfull. If I were a pro-driver I guess I would just drift those corners sideways. But I am no pro and prefer to keep my car in line. With the m50 manifold, the midrange is still incredibly powerfull, pulling smoothly and quickly from 2k-6k. The car feels more like a sports car, flexable yet willing to rev. Around 6k, BMW uses a soft revlimiter, pulling fuel and leaning out the motor b4 the actual redline/limiter. A ecu reflash restores the fuel and usually sets a 7k redline. But use 7k with restraint, the bottom end of the US S50/S52 is not strong as the euro "M" motors.

    I have a 98 E36 coupe 323i, I have done the m50 manifold swap, custom made all the brackets which are needed to move the manifold slightly and modified the m50 to take the original m52 mounting plate and vacuum pipes & oil separator diaphragm pipe work, deleted the asc+t throttle body by soldering in a 10ohm resistor so its presence is simulated and airbag and abs still work, also running a 4.6 kg billet flywheel and 228mm clutch + cdv delete! There is a slight loss of torque low down but still using the oe air box with a k&n filter, pulls smoothly in third gear to 90+mph.....

    Congrats on the new toy. I did the swap myself. I purchased the Tuner’s package along with the stage 2 turning, 24lbs injectors and CAI. It took me a while to do the upgrade, more like weeks lol. That’s because I changed all the coolant hoses and did complete overhaul to belts, hoses, water pump, thermo, pulleys, and still managed to pull 16 hours shift at work. Would I do it again : yes.

    • @redrock1963
      @redrock1963 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Allen B. - the swap is only good for M52's. The perfect companion to the m50 manifold on an
      M52 is to chip the ECU. On the post '96 M52's they are a plug and play. You can buy chips on line pretty easy and they literally plug in and away you go. While the manifold flows more air it also shifts the torque curve up in the RPM's. The chip ups the injector rate to match the extra air and also helps to bring the torque back down closer to mid-range. The chip also advances the
      ignition timing a fair bit. I had a '95 328i that I had to buy a "hard wired" chipped ECU (this is on '95 and earlier - way more hassle and expensive). It definitely gave it extra HP but unfortunately I didn't get around to fitting the manifold. If I had another go I would choose a post '96 for this
      reason. I still have the manifold and it's begging me to strap it up to something.

      I've had 2 tunes from 2 diff tuners. In my experience the torque comes back a bit but will never have the low end it has with the stock manifold. The power and is shifted higher but now it does not run out of steam at high rpm and keeps pulling. Worth it if you spend time at high rpm but not worth it if you don't.

    hey, so I'm using a Castrol 0w40 European blend, but I've noticed a ticking noise in my engine after its warm. my guess is that, once it gets warm and once the oil thins out from heat, my valvetrain isnt getting thick enough oil. I'm in Denver so my climate is pretty similar. how's rotella been for you? I'm at 187k and I just wanna keep my engine in good condition, but that 5w40 looks enticing now that I think my 0w40 is too thin. also just got some new headers, and am gonna m50 manifold swap as well!
