Fantastic review. I believe the Lego designers deliberately made the Galactic Explorer II bigger not only to fit in more fun detail, play features, and display space for the minifigures but also to be proportionate with adult hands to capture the same feeling of handling the Galactic Explorer I when fans were kids back in the day.

    • @MateoRojo-g4v

The designers said they wanted the galaxy explorer to be "grown up" like the kids who played with original.

I had the vintage model, I have the new modern version. It was a blast putting the ship together. It’s a perfect nod to vintage LEGO fun and imagination. They REALLY knocked it out of the park with this set. ❤

@@Paul_1971 likewise i had this set, and still do (mostly) i think in pieces in a giant box now mixed in with lego our kids grew up which is not the worst of fates for them. From memory I still had many of the important parts such as the ship ID blocks. But sadly while i kept most of my Space lego, i somehow lost hold of those glorious plates...gone in the mists of time.

@@WaypointComics I wince when I think about the stuff I either gave away to charity shops or sold for a pittance in my 20s/30s - all mint in box, GI Joe/Mask ect. My love for Space Lego as a kid was limited to staring at the pictures in Christmas catalogs and weekly newspaper ads, unfortunately. I had some cheap knock-off Lego sets that were fun to make ships with, though. The ships had to be fairly small, otherwise they'd fall apart. I longed for proper Legos, since I knew based on the one tiny Lego set I got from an Aunt for Christmas that they would actually hold together.

This set also made me realize I've had an og blackton minifig floating around in my collection.

Just bought assembled this yesterday and I love it. Every little detail of it is so cool, but I think my favorite out all of them has to be the control panel tile that shows a screen resembling the game Asteroids. Such a fitting and amusing detail. On top of that, the designer also created two alternate ship designs with instructions that you can get online or through the Builder app. For $100, this is probably one of the most bang-for-your-buck sets that I’ve seen in a while.

About the point with the LL 928 marking.
Benny's spaceship was marked LL 929 and treated as the spiritual successor to the Galaxy Explorer in the context of the Lego Movie. The use of the original number on this set feels like either a direct remake in the contemporary 'no lunar plates' Space line or it might be akin to the US Navy using certain ship names again after the original has been retired or otherwise taken out of service. CV-8 and CV-12 are both considered the USS Hornet in the same way that CV-6, CVN-65 and the CVN-80 are all the USS Enterprise aircraft carrier.

You ought to check out the new space line. Not only are the sets cool to play with, they have a basic framework of a narrative, that you can figure out yourself, as you build, collect, and play.
Additionally, the Space them chris-crosses multiple other lines. Chiefly City, Technix, and friends. The modular docking system works across all three lines, letting you play with all three, in a single atoryline of your choice.
Other little details include the color coding of the space suits, based on what division the astronaut works for. Green for science, blue for operations/piloting, and yellow for engineering. Even the various, creatively designes little robots have color markings for what division they belong to.
Definitely give them a look, even if it's just playing with someone else's collection.

Very cool! And great video too. I definitely am blown away by the Explorer being at spiritual heart of this new one, but ageee that it's deserving (and needing) an ID number that reflects (in universe) that it's the next/newer model. In keeping with that, I gotta admit, it would've been nice if they could have included an original astronaut/spaceman but with a new high-level rank marking of some kind to give a feeling of one of the ones we had having risen in rank over these year.

Time travelling to the modern town era lego and castle era lego was a blast too cos they'd have to switch from spacesuits to contemporary disguises and try to blend in with the pre-space era legomen locals, although someone always let the cat out of the bag so we'd have to show them the future lol.

Great set, so glad they did this remake, however, it’s a bit disappointing that some parts come off very easily (landing pads) and if you try to pick up the ship from the middle of the cabin (like we used to do with the original) it crumbles in your hands as you try to pick it up. LEGO clutch power ain’t what it used to be but despite that, I bought three of them and I REALLY hope they do more Classic Space remakes (like they do over and over and over with Star Wars).

I had some issues with building this set. The frame was monotonous to construct, and it wasn’t until bags five and six did I really start having fun with the build. It took me about seven hours, including snack breaks and the such, to complete the set. I was thinking about purchasing as many as I could instead of the UCS Star Destroyer, and then using the parts from those sets to build my own Mandator 1-class Battlecruiser (Republic At War) LEGO MOC since the main body silhouette reminds me of a Super Star Destroyer. I may be going against the cosmic wind with this thought , but I wonder if Lego will ever have a set based upon the Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser.

I like what you said about its name and serial I'd if the USAF had called the b21:raider simply stealth bomber and B2 it would create a lot of confusion.
