There are several reasons why the Classic Gray Helmets are so expensive, except for the scarcity of sets - the chinstraps were the first thin version that broke easily (other colors had thickerchinstraps already in the 80's) , and they're coveted now by both Castlemasons and Interstellar Engineers, which bumps up the pricing...
i hope they produce the re-release helmet and airtanks in light bluish grey in a random set, like the purple ones being released in the chinese parade set this way, the grey astronaut is more accessible, the helmet doesnt have to be the weak, old style helmet, and it can be in the updated grey color. the mismatching between old and new greys for the grey spaceman irks me so much lmao

Those helmets appear to be almost cylindrical from the side. It looks like the helmet you have pictured at :50 is the one usually identified as a THICK chin strap on BL. While it's definitely thinner than the motorcycle helmet, it's notably thicker than the original found in the Yellow Castle, for instance (BL part 193a2). I'm sure you all know that's why Benny's helmet is cracked in the movies, to remind us of the mid-80's, before the new blue spacemen had the thicker straps pictured in the video! Everyone feel free to tell me I'm wrong! Comments are great for the algorithm, right???

@@BrickingUpBrad The grey helmets from the Yellow Castle, the Knight's Tournament, and the two Castle Mini Figures sets from '83 & '84 were the same style with the thin chin strap. The original knights' visors seem to look a little better with those helmets than with the thicker ones. If you ever want to mix and match your visors in a castle MOC, some of the blue and yellow helmets, until maybe '85, '86 or '87, were that style as well!
The way they handled the Gray and Purple spacemen torsos was shitty. They should have just made the gray and purples figures with all their parts. Instead you have to go on a hunt to assemble all the bits for both of them, and of course they had to include the purple helmet in a $100 set (which also has nothing to do with classic space!). That's just scummy. I'm lucky that I have all the colors, aside from a true classic blue spaceman (I have a basic benny), and I am missing the gray and purple guys. I'm lucky to have found a pristine black spaceman torso in years past, and I ordered a few of the new classic astronaut helmets in black off of Pick-a-Brick. I do really want a purple guy, but I will probably sleep on the gray one until/unless they release the revived helmet mold in new gray, so I don't have to obtain a super rare one that's like 40 fuckin years old (and doesn't even match the torso!). Not to mention the airtanks that haven't been produced in new gray either. I wish the LEGO group would give more consideration to people who are trying to collect the figures. Putting in a light gray space torso and not providing some way to get the rest of the bits is mean. Same with making a purple torso, but pairing it with printed arms and legs, and then including the helm and airtanks in a $100 set. They were close, but ultimately just left it up to the aftermarket so people could get the bits they want. Imagine how happy everyone would be if they could just buy a whole set of multicolored astronauts in one box.
Yeah definitely agree. Lego didn’t do a great job with purple and grey. But I also think that Lego wasn’t expecting people to build the spacemen off those figures. I bet the designers who made the cmfs just wanted to throw back to og classic space.

They just need to actually throw us a bone and make it easier to get the parts needed/sell the figure assembled instead of producing the parts seperately.
While the classic space torsos don’t seem to ever show up on Bricks&Pieces, both the orange and purple airtanks and helmets have shown up there. I was able to snag like 10 of each a couple months back, for like 50¢ apiece. Be ready to pounce if they show up-they go fast, and it took me a week of trying to make it to checkout without one of the parts disappearing (because they ran out of stock while I was shopping).

regularly check bricks and pieces for the classic style helmets and airtanks, that way you can avoid buying those huge sets from random themes and instead get them individually for cheap. i know that the blue, black, orange, purple and even green helmets were all available with the official lego service bricks and pieces even as i write this, you can still get the white reissue of the classic spaceman for a total $2.50 each on bricks and pieces
Great video! It looks like I started my collection right before it got real expensive. (Still trying to figure out the best time/price to get that purple airtank and helmet though.) I'm sure color purists will disagree, but I don't find the difference between old light gray and new blueish gray to be that noticeable, so I went ahead and used the old knight's helmet and airtanks and I think he looks pretty good. The rocket boy is one of my all-time favorite collectable minifigures, but no one has to know he now has a generic gray torso underneath the rocket suit. ;) Rather than buying the individual piece, I found the most affordable option at the time was to buy a complete Yellow Castle minifigure from a European Bricklink shop for about $17. (The sticker was in terrible condition, bringing the price down, but all I wanted was the helmet.) I was able to pick up some less rare vintage pieces at the same time, making the shipping cost a little more bearable. I think the worst part was trying to find the brown spaceman in a blind bag search. It took so long!
I was thinking of keeping the purple space torso intact. Either using the printed arms as a signifier of a high rank (which would also justify the scarcity of Purple Space Minifigs in a MOC, or perhaps keeping the entire Alien Minifig intact to signify purple as the color of non-human members in the service (which shows an inviting side to these guys being willing to cooperate with alien civilizations they meet along the way). Also, Denny from the Dreamzz set, Mr. Oz' Space Bus has an updated Black Classic Helmet, and there are leaks concerning new colors for the Space Babyfigs.
My dad owes about two of the classic space sets. One of them having the black astronaut. He gave me both sets a couple years ago. Back them I didn’t know it was worth money so I threw the minifig around, toke of the legs, and arms sadly. Only now this past year I was curious and looked up the astronaut’s cost. The torso has about 75% of the gold which is pretty good. I had to find the helmet and air tank in my big bin, not easy. I have the full figure but the helmet is pretty lose. I also have 2 yellow and red astronauts in almost new condition, the only thing tho is that one of the yellow figs had a lose neck. I am looking forward to repairing the sets including this cool looking grabber
Fun fact, the reissued black astronaut in the vintage minifigure collection has a misprinted torso in the version of that set sold outside of north america. Collecting the american version became a bit of a white whale for me and I just recently got one imported to the UK! The white astronaut is also misprinted but thankfully there are have been several opportunities to get the correct one.

The UK one has the space logos in the wrong place on the torso (only for that one specific collection/set, spacemen in the other ones are fine!) So if you're into that sort of thing you have two more spacemen to collect! Though I may be wrong about the regional distributions: you actually mentioned different versions in your video, like you showed the supposedly NA version of the fig collection with the black/white spacemen, but the one you showed with the yellow spaceman is one of the supposedly UK/worldwide ones (the NA version of that collection didn't have the yellow spaceman!). Some of the corresponding sets have the same figs but usually with part/colour/print variations (while some figs are exactly the same). Some of the sets have completely different figs with odd figs from the 5th set of the UK versions being distributed among the 4 US ones. You can check them all out on bricklink/brickset where the supposedly NA ones are considered to be 2012/TRU versions and the UK ones are listed as 2009 versions.
Green classic helmet is coming in a Ninjago or Monkey Kid set, I don't remember which name or exact theme, but it was one of the big city-like sets, and pink Space-Baby is coming this year too:D
There is a way to get an entire old grey spaceman... back when Classic Space sets were still on shelves, either as a promotional item or an early-production inclusion that was quickly switched to printing, transparent-backed stickers for minifigure torsos were made by LEGO with the classic space logo on them. These allowed you to turn any blank minifigure torso you had into a classic spaceman torso - including different colors! I've seen people use these rare sticker sheets to make their own old grey spaceman torsos and complete old grey spacemen. However, these sticker sheets, as I said, are rare and shrouded in mystery. They are not cheap and rarely appear for sale, but they are a way to make a 100% real LEGO old grey classic spaceman. Of course you could also just make your own custom stickers and do the same thing much more cheaply and easily, you just wouldn't be able to claim it as being 100% LEGO without the rare official stickers. This sticker sheet would also in theory make it possible to build both a dark orange spaceman and a pearl dark grey spaceman, as motorcycle helmets and air tanks are both available in those colors. Things like blank torsos and the other minifig parts will be harder to find, but there are online shops where you can buy official LEGO parts that have had the printing removed, as well as places that sell blank monochromatic minifigures made using that process - for a price. That would likely be the easiest way to obtain the parts for a dark orange or pearl dark gray spaceman.
I would be completely over the moon (pun intended) if LEGO released an Everyone Is Awesome set but with classic spacemen in each of the colours instead of monofigs and with Classic Space builds similar to those in Benny's Space Squad instead of the rainbow floor and wall. For the grey spaceman, it's not ideal for purists but there's a DK_bluish grey Classic Space helmet in "31130 Sunken Treasre Mission", it looks great if you keep the DK_bluish grey hands of the torso. There's also a (new style) blue Classic Space helmet in "71708 Gamer's Market", so you can easily convert a Benny into a regular blue Classic Space astronaut.

They just updated them material wise. So yes that was the wrong phrasing to use but they are a new version of the originals

Castle is better then pirates, lore wise though pirates is better. And I have such a soft spot for westerns so I have to say western over space but that’s just me!
Castle over pirates, but only because I had them as a kid and have amazing memories of my Yellow Castle. I didn't collect pirates until decades later, but those sea battles and boarding actions with the big ships are great fun! Space was the first set my mom and grandmother ever bought me, so definitely space over western, but I still love my Fort Legorado!
I just finished collecting them all. The gray one was the most expensive for me at $65 ($30 for the rocket boy and $35 for the head, helmet, legs and air tank). I got the green ones new in sealed box for $60 off of eBay. I did score a few black ones for $25.

A guy was selling the whole collection of different colors (not the gray or green ones, the actual open-face helmet ones) for like $200 and I got ALL of them for like $115 all together. It was a Christmas present for my girlfriend, I got her the Galaxy Explorer and all the spacemen
Today I got the brown one, with a radio and a little cute blue one :) The seller helped us find him from all the minifigures and he found him right) Overall we had a lot of fun and he looks awesome.
If i had to guess the brown space men are care takers since they come with a baby and has camras to watch them i assume they would be only in bases and there to teach them
You didn't really go InTo the differences in torsos, and how exactly those would effect cost, if you consider the better newer cores that the kegs go InTo, and weather or not the thin or thick chins of the helmet make any significant differences to the cost.
Well we're getting the helmet in green with that Monkie kid Megaopolis set. And yes it's the standard green, not the slightly lighter green, though it would be nice to get a spaceman in that color as well.
I'm not collecting'em all myself since the orange and combo figures are so expensive to get, but i hope they release a green Classic Space helmet one day, there's something not right about the motorbike helmet.
For the blue one I used benny. I swapped the head to a classic one. But what about the helmet you may ask? Lego actually released a classic blue UNBROKEN helmet in the ninjago set 71708!
This highlights some of the madness of bricklink (and perhaps laziness of some collectors). When near identical figures are different costs because of a basic face/pair of legs.

As a classic space snob, I would argue that there are only 5 classic spacemen: The 5 original colours with classic helmets. All others are recent, remakes or facsimiles.

Castle is better then pirates, lore wise though pirates is better.
And I have such a soft spot for westerns so I have to say western over space but that’s just me!
Castle over pirates, but only because I had them as a kid and have amazing memories of my Yellow Castle. I didn't collect pirates until decades later, but those sea battles and boarding actions with the big ships are great fun!
Space was the first set my mom and grandmother ever bought me, so definitely space over western, but I still love my Fort Legorado!

They have re-issued some ideas sets. My hope is that the Exo-suit will be re-released with the correct helmet, since it is now an available part.

I just finished collecting them all. The gray one was the most expensive for me at $65 ($30 for the rocket boy and $35 for the head, helmet, legs and air tank). I got the green ones new in sealed box for $60 off of eBay. I did score a few black ones for $25.

A guy was selling the whole collection of different colors (not the gray or green ones, the actual open-face helmet ones) for like $200 and I got ALL of them for like $115 all together.
It was a Christmas present for my girlfriend, I got her the Galaxy Explorer and all the spacemen
Today I got the brown one, with a radio and a little cute blue one :) The seller helped us find him from all the minifigures and he found him right) Overall we had a lot of fun and he looks awesome.
If i had to guess the brown space men are care takers since they come with a baby and has camras to watch them i assume they would be only in bases and there to teach them

In set 31130 there is a dark gray space helmet. Maybe in the future a dark gray classic space torso and oxygen tanks

You didn't really go InTo the differences in torsos, and how exactly those would effect cost, if you consider the better newer cores that the kegs go InTo, and weather or not the thin or thick chins of the helmet make any significant differences to the cost.
I really hope Lego re-releases the black spaceman, or at the very least the torso.

Well we're getting the helmet in green with that Monkie kid Megaopolis set. And yes it's the standard green, not the slightly lighter green, though it would be nice to get a spaceman in that color as well.

For the blue one I used benny. I swapped the head to a classic one. But what about the helmet you may ask? Lego actually released a classic blue UNBROKEN helmet in the ninjago set 71708!

This highlights some of the madness of bricklink (and perhaps laziness of some collectors). When near identical figures are different costs because of a basic face/pair of legs.
The reason identical figures are sometimes more expensive then others is because of how many sets it came in. And the rarity of it.

I feel like you should mention PAB so newbies know they can get purple helmets and air tanks for Pennies instead of $10+ apiece (and now green helmets!!)

As a classic space snob, I would argue that there are only 5 classic spacemen: The 5 original colours with classic helmets. All others are recent, remakes or facsimiles.
I literally just put all of my modern classic space minifigures on display and less than an hour later this showed up in my recommended
