For many, the fear of the unknown keeps them imprisoned in the Amish community, and it's understandable since being Amish is all they know. But for the ones who take that risk and leave, they soon discover there is a whole another world outside of the Amish way of life.

I wonder if deeply religious people ever regret the pain, fear, sadness and confusion that religious dogma causes?
I grew up in a devoutly Catholic family. But when I came out to them as a gay man, every single family member expressed their love and understanding to me. They were able to cherish their love of god without doubting their love of me, or mine for them.
Truly moral people, like truly patriotic people, do not swallow the senseless idea that genuine humanity only includes people who obey trivial, ancient mythologies, or people who will defend an unjustified war because a belligerent president demanded unthinking loyalty.

@@FrugalFuel judgement will always exist, even without religion, as it is a our primary survival ability. To know right from wrong, safe from unsafe, good from bad, acceptable from unacceptable, edible from inedible, healthy from unhealthy, truth from error, etc.
Without our inborn ability to be judgemental, or to use the more positive word discerning, we would be extinct as a species.
People will arrive at certain conclusions about things, be it lifestyle, politics, food choices, sexual activity and orientation, religion, etc. and form groups with likeminded people that exclude those who think differently from themselves. Driven by our survival instinct to gather with those who share our values, beliefs and world view.
The flocking instinct of safety in numbers causes us to form association groups, with those who have different values, beliefs and world views, seen as a primal threat to our safety and survival.
The stronger a group's self identify is, the more closed they will be to any ideas, beliefs or practices foreign to that of the group. For a group gives a sense of identity, of belonging, of safety, of protection to it's members. Thereby fulfilling our basic instincts for survival and self preservation.
Thus the Amish rejection of homosexuality, is much deeper than just a religious bias or quirk.

Our major religions have a very narrow knowledge of human sexuality and base it on biblical interpretations and misinterpretations. Jesus Christ in all his ministry never brought up the subject of sexuality. The Old Testatament brings it up especially in the book of Leviticus and beware what you read in the old testament. In the book of Joshua whole populations with their animals were annihilated because of the "promises " of God to Abraham. The old testament has too many inconsistencies. Sexuality is even misunderstood even in our modern times. No one chooses his or her sexuality it's controlled by our hormonal system. All of us have both male and female hormones, they sometimes overlap each other. To put the stain of sin on the backs of people with homosexual tendencies is cruel and dishonorable. Unfortunately religion sometimes makes us very narrowminded !!

This really isn't different from the struggle most non Amish people deal with. There is a lack of understanding or a misunderstanding of what gay/lesbian means and where such sexual diversions stem from. There is plenty of judgement, punishment and shunning in our own culture. And most of this stems from what others believe to be biblical, Christian or righteous. The church, as a whole, may condemn it but it is doing little to understand it, offering unbiased counseling or empathy and caring. Many Amish and non Amish marry in order to comply but may live unhappy lives or commit adultery outside the marriage. They may treat their spouses with contempt because they feel isolated and forced into a marriage of convenience not love. Because acceptance by others is slow to build gay/lesbian persons of any faith, nationality or sect need to focus on forming communities where information, open conversations, building business connections and relationship guidance are focal and inclusive. I would love to help organize such an outreach.

You would find the Mormons have similar issues and as most , leave the church eventually, albeit probably harder among Amish because their education is slightly behind the normal societal levels. It’s too bad they cannot find better means to speak and get counseling for this! Those that go outside the Amish community, hopefully meet a supportive and helpful gay person from which to decide what they should do for themselves . To have love is a basic need in life!

Scarier still is the fact that most comments these days are also AI generated, especially the ones praising videos like this one for being so great and unique and inspiring, etc. There is a growing belief that the Internet as we knew it has long since died and the majority of it is now run by AI bots both posting and responding. I have no doubt this is absolutely true. I'm 52 and have seen the Internet being born, thrive, and now completely collapse into an utter AI-generated (or degenerated) wasteland. :(

It was common back in the 1950's for a priest to counsel a man confessing homosexual tendencies or actions to get married. It happened to a friend of mine. I have known of priests in Ireland who entered the priesthood because they were gay and did not want to be forced into getting married. My Portuguese friends told me the same about some gay men in Portugal who became priests or brothers to escape marriage.

    • @IslandHome-o5v

The Catholic Church calls it a disorder of human nature that must be resisted. The only option for such people is a life of chastity. In October 1986 the then prefect of the CONGREGATION FOR THE DOCTRINE OF THE FAITH (formerly the Holy office of the Inquisition) Cardinal Ratzinger, later Pope Benedict XVI published a letter to the Bishops of the Catholic Church on the pastoral care of homosexual persons. There is some sympathy expressed in the letter but the bottom line is that homosexual acts are a grave sin and the only option for people thus afflicted is a life of chastity. I think you will find that most Othodox Jews and Muslims would share this view.

If an Amish man in midlife has to leave the community they are at risk of poverty if they become disabled or when they become too old to work for themselves. They may not earn enough or contribute long enough to social security out in the secular world.. Their only recourse would be welfare or food stamps. Even with social security and medicare life can be tough if you have contributed to it all your life. It is a scary prospect.

How many people did the church kill? And let us compare that to the deaths in World War one, World war two, the civil war, the American revolutionary war, the Vietnam war, the war for New Mexico and Texas with Mexico, the Korean war, and the list goes on. Did religion have anything to do with these wars? So, give me some examples and let us see what numbers are "staggering". Where are the "staggering" numbers that religion has killed? Muslims were committing genocide against middle eastern Christians , who then sought help from the papacy. The response came to be known as the crusades. Not even a fraction of men were murdered compared to the astronomical number of men who died under secularism, do your homework.

To say the video is redundant is an understatement, but it caught my attention, as it was meant to do, and I only watched half of it. I respect the Amish and Mennonite peoples. I love their culture, and what shall be shall be, as says Doris Day. I don't see any big deal in this. Same sex attraction has always, and will always, exist among men and women, that is natural, but will vary if compulsion is part of one's desire where it can become a psychological quandary. I don't know much about this, but I believe a guy can feel attraction towards other guys and still love God, and our God shall be the judge, not other men and women. If one hurts others, then let us call out that wrong, but intimacy between two consenting adults is and must remain personal.
This, however, was not the focus of my comment. I just wanted to say, where did they get these guys and girls to pose for this video, from a catalogue for models? Everyone is objectively good looking, and I don't believe they are real Amish, but just guys and girls posing for the camera.

Here is the short version of the misunderstanding. Until 1869, there was no concept of homoseulity. Until then it was assumed every man was attracted to women. Wise people may have known better but for most there was no concept that for some, heterosexual relationship was impossible. Leviticus 18:22 should be read as "Thou (heterosexual man) shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination." It is heterosexual men who are prohibited from same sex relationships. These passages not apply to homosexual men. The idea that these passages should also apply to homosexuals is crazy. It destroys the life of a homosexual man. I'm sorry that you had such a negative experience within the Amish community. In the past, I’ve heard that they would shun their own if they didn't follow the community's way of life. The experience sounds like something I would never want to be a part of. I believe that the world is full of many different people with many different life experiences. Each one of us is unique, and I think it's important that we celebrate our differences. What you are feeling is completely normal and it’s understandable how being shunned by family could be devastating. While a lot of people see your situation as negative, I personally see it as an opportunity to build a fulfilling life free of constraints and negativity. I really can’t help but notice how much you truly do appreciate your family. Despite what they’ve done, I’d like to believe that they genuinely love you and are well-meaning. However, their attempts to convince you to abandon your individuality and conform to their way of life are a violation of who you are. I’m sorry that your family has not been more accepting of your identity.

Possibly because women, as in most fundamentalist, religious cults (yes, cults), are seen as the servants of men. Men are the masters of the family, and hold the society together. What women do themselves is really unimportant. A woman who finds other women sexually attractive shuts her mouth, marries whomever male her father approves of, and lets her man have his way with her. Much like as when the Amish began their religious cult in the 1500s. Another thing: domestic abuse (wife beating) is "handled" totally within the cult itself, no outside law intervention or reporting of such to the police. They are their own "police".

This is so terrible. What do you mean what if?
You roll around in the hay and don't tell anyone. It's been going on for centuries.

Just another problem with religion in general. Another set of ways religion causes harm and dysfunction. Trying to warp real life into a fairy tale. We could do it the other way and make the fairy tales reflect real life. But where would the cruelty be in that?

Här är Bibeln, gamla testamentet och Quranen lika fördömmande. Är man drabbad har man att välja, anpassning eller sorti. Sverige har valt en medelväg, anpassning av tro till personligt tycke och smak. Låter sympatiskt men lämnar konsekvenser....

None of the major religions fought against racism at the times of slavery and the bible and the coran were not used to defend what was right at that time. So interpretation of the bible and the coran is what makes the injustice of discrimination subsist to this day.

I don't know about the Quran but the Orginal Bible did not condemn homosexuality. The passages that people use today are misinterpretations or altered to make it seem like God is condemning homosexuality.

Language evolves. For instance, "homosexuality" is new word describing a new conceptual understanding. It didn't exist 150 years ago and didn't appear in any Bible prior to 1946.
