Thank you for this. I heard it said in a service by two pastors, "we don't really die, we just go to one place or the other." I have often wanted to revisit them and ask them who is it then that lied: God? when He said, the soul that sinneth it shall die" , or the serpent who said, "you shall not surely die." It really is that simple.

@@richardmitchell409 Jesus literally distinguished the difference.
The soul is not "immortal". It's destiny is, as Jesus stated, in the hands of God.
Man's autonomy ends in this body. The soul is God's. There isn't much coverage of this in The Word, but I can't help but wonder how we go from one body to a glorified body at resurrection.
Jesus had no loss of memory when he was raised. Could it be that the soul is the "essence" (for lack of a better word) of man that God maintains and imparts in the vessel of his choosing?
Who knows? Confusing these biblically derivative ideas with preexistence doesn't really help the conversation.

I think we really need to make a distinction between "soul" and "spirit", or at least make sure that people understand that there are two very different concepts that are often translated as "soul" in English Bibles. The spirit (ruach or neshamah) is the incorporeal part of a person that continues to live in after the body dies. People have a spirit, while animals do not. The soul (nephesh) is the whole package of a living being. People *are* souls made up, in part, of spirits and bodies. Unfortunately, many Bibles and English speakers use these terms interchangeably and this is an enormous barrier to understanding what the Bible really says about our nature. People and animals are both nephesh or living souls.

Spirit can also refer to our temperament or drive. Ie you can have an angry, generous or gentle spirit. Your spirit can also be broken. Something much deeper than a broken heart. But nowhere is it indicated that it's some conscious being that can exist outside the body.

The ancient Israeli word for "soul" is "nephish". It also means "life". Therefore, "life" and "soul" are synonymous. Where is the nephish (life/soul) located? Genesis 9:4 - "But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood." Leviticus 17:11 - "For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that
makes atonement for the soul." Animals also have the breath of life, aka, nephish/life/soul. Where is the nephish/life/soul? In the blood. Our life force is in our blood. Genesis 2:7 - "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (soul/nephish); and man became a living being (life/soul/nephish)." We are a soul, life, nephish. The life force, soul force, nephish force resides in the blood. I challenge anyone to show me Scripture that says we have an immortal, independent soul, life, nephish like a ghost that exists apart from the body.

Satan’s greatest ambassadors are not pimps, politicians, or power-brokers, but pastors.
His priests do not peddle a different religion, but a deadly perversion of the true one.
His troops do not make a full-out frontal assault, but work as agents, sneaking into the opposing army.
Satan’s tactics are studied, clever, predictable, effective. Therefore, we must always remain vigilant.

But, it wont be permanent its a time of reaping and trying to exist on the fruit of what we have sown. At judgement they become alive again body and soul " breath" will stand before the throne and given the sentence real death" they will cease to exist consumed by the lake of fire. P. S. Isaiah 53:5, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes, we are healed.
For salvation, people just need to follow the way they did it in Acts? They were baptized in the water and of the spirit. Here's why! The gospel is the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. If we are to follow him, we must do the same thing. Death= repentance, Burial = baptism, and resurrection = being filled with the Holy Ghost and rising again from the dead. That's what Acts 2:38 is.
We must obey the gospel, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that OBEY NOT THE GOSPEL of our Lord Jesus Christ... Matthew 7:21-23, Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that DOETH THE WILL OF MY FATHER which is in Heaven. St John 3:3-5, EXCEPT a man be born of WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT, he cannot enter into the kingdom of GOD.
We can't come up with our own gospel. Galatians 1:8-9, But though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. Don't be cursed. One way for all people. Jews, Gentiles, and Samaritan. Our salvation has to match-up with the scriptures and no scriptures on the subject can be taken away.
Eternity is TOOO long to be WRONG! st, John 5:39, Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
God told Noah exactly how to be saved, how he must build the ark. Noah didn't come up with his own plan like people are doing today. A sinner's prayer, you just have to believe, etc which is not in the bible.
The gospels show what Christ has done on the cross for us. The book of Acts shows us the beginning of Christ's Church and how to enter the Church, obeying Acts 2:38. The letters were written to the Church to show us how to behave now that we are born again into the Church.
It's better to walk alone than to walk with a crowd going in the wrong direction. Are we supposed to follow the teachings of the apostles? Acts 2:42, They continued steadfastly in the apostle's doctrines. Ephesians 2:20, We are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone. Jesus Christ truly loves you. Do you truly love him? If you believe in this message, help spread it in the name of Jesus Christ. God bless you!

Larry, Our Lord stayed three days and three nights buried like he said he would after being crucified. When Mary and the other women saw him early on the first day of the week after he had risen she tried to touch him and he forbade her because like he said he hadn't ascended as yet to his father. How then did the thief join him in paradise immediately after death? I know the placing of the coma in that scripture could connote the meaning you are ascribing to but the Bible does not support that doctrine of going anywhere but the grave after death.
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:

Their spirit/uncousious soul returns to God who gave it. This is what will return to the dead at the resurrection. However, this does not mean that the soul is immortal.

The Word of God is very simple to understand, but when something is too simple the majority of people turns to complicate it. God never intended his children to be unclear about the Word at any point in their lives. The children of God are supposed to have the light of life because they follow Christ (John 8:12). But it is sad that too many Christians around the world don't really understand the Word of God and they err (James 1:16, James 5:19 and Matthew 22:29). And because they do not understand the Word of God, the enemy takes advantage of them, and they are taken captive at the devil's will (2Tim 2:26). Love from South Africa

Btw did you know that satan is still in heaven? Not the third heaven but the second one... But John saw that in the last days, he will be thrown to the earth. ANd also if you ever wondered why Michael didn't slander satan its because even though he sinned against God , he still has heavenly nature. It is clear that just like David was merciful upon Absalom because he had royal blood so too God pitied satan because he used to dwell in heaven and has a heavenly nature. Interesting things... It seems to me tho that John foresaw a second exodus by the hand of God through the two witnesses but I am not sure...

So if death in this explaination is being totally unawareness/unconsciousness, then this death would have to apply to Messiah. So if that is the case, and there is non-conscienceness in death, then Yeshua(Jesus) would disqualify Himself as the Messiah since He made a false statement about resurrecting Himself. He cannot resurrect Himself if He is nonconsciences/unwareness state. That also would mean that when He was resurrected He would have to be reborn since there was no life in Him when he was dead in the tomb.. By the way if the Son of Elohim was completely death then Elohim would stop to exist because Elohim is one. SO DID MESSIAH DIED A DIFFERENT TYPE OF DEATH, DEATH IS DEATH ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURES?

So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’ “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’ “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’ “ ‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’ “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ””

Scriptures I have found that have me questioning are: Romans-8:29, Galatians-1:15. 1 Peter-1:20, Jeremiah-1:5 and Isaiah-44:24. These scriptures indicate God knew men before being born. I understand God it outside space and time as He is omnipresent. I'm wondering if the soul he creates at conception would not have already been in some form of existence in that place outside of space and time to know any before being formed.

So "I tell you the truth today, you WILL be with me in paradise." Is very different than "I tell you the truth, TODAY you will be with me in paradise"
Jesus, after he was resurrected, told Mary not to touch him as he hadn't gone to the father yet. Jesus was dead those three days. He was in the grave. The Holy Spirit had to raise him up,he wasn't conscious or able to raise himself. He had not gone to heaven yet. So clearly he could not have been with the thrief in paradise THAT day. There are some confusing statements about this,; like when Jesus said, " he that liveth and belieth in me shall never die". Yet, almost all the other scriptures make it clear that the person who dies no longer is aware of anything happening in world or any other until the resurrection from the dead.

Without a doubt the human soul is immortal. This is clearly seen in many Scriptures in both Old and New Testament : Psalms 22:6, 49:7-8, Ecclesiastes 12:7, Dan.12:2-3, Matt.25:46 and 1Cor.15:12-19.
Dan.12:2 says multitudes who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life, others to shame and everlasting contempt.
Jesus Himself said that the wicked will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life Matt25:46.
While all souls are immortal, it is important to remember that we are not eternal in the same way that God is. God is immortal but God has always existed. Our souls are immortal but had a beginning. Our souls will live forever once we come into being, the Bible does not support the concept that our souls have always existed. God created our souls.
How can anyone read that and say that the soul is not immortal ? Heaven is forever and The Lake of Fire is also forever.

That's telling us that when Christ died He made atonement sufficient for the whole world. He is the Deliverer , the preserver of all mankind, but the Saviour from sin of those who believe. This does not teach universalism, that all will be saved because in Matt.7:23 we find Him saying "Depart from Me, I never knew you".

verse 15 says which in His times, He is going to show this old world who is boss, who is the only Potentate (Potentate meaning Ruler, Sovereign, One who wields Great Power ), The King of kings and Lord of lords.
verse 16 says "who only" meaning Him only, hath immortality dwelling in the light which no man can approach ….. this expresses uniqueness. Jesus in no uncertain terms is equated with God Himself in this verse.
Man is immortal, but not in the same way that God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are immortal.
God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit have always been, they never had a beginning or an end. They are unique.
Man was created by God before the foundation of the world Eph. 1:4. We had a beginning, but will not end.
      Eph.1:4 tells us of Predestination.

I am talking about 1 Samuel chapter 28 starting with vers 7. I am pretty sure that the problem is not with the Scripure but instead it’s my problem of understanding this. So if you could share your knowledge in this matter that would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Great question. Notice verse 14 says that Saul "PERCEIVED that it was Samuel". It wasn't really Samuel because Samuel was and is asleep in the grave awaiting the Resurrection. This was a demonic spirit(fallen angel) impersonating Samuel. This is why several times in Scripture God condemns attempting to speak with the dead(Deuteronomy 18). Those who do this are speaking with demonic beings. I pray this answers your question. God bless!

Also, Abraham is also asleep awaiting the "Day of The Lord" but he is also "active" and speaks to the rich man in Luke 16:19-31. Before you say that's a parable, I don't think it is. That would be the first parable that mentions a name- Lazarus, who I think he actually lived and died and it's now with Abraham.

Many people don't know the difference between soul and spirit. That is why there is so much confusion.
It is the spirit which is eternal. But there is a difference between a quickened spirit and a dead spirit. That is what decides where one goes in the afterlife: heaven or hell.
The soul can be lost (Matt 16:26, Mark 8:36), can be destroyed (Matt 10:28, Luke 12:5)
When Adam sinned it was his spirit which died. But "died" is not the same as "disappeared". Angels are spirits. But there are also fallen angels, which, have lost their relationship with God. That doesn't mean that they have disappeared.
The spirit is the divine nature, is God's nature. A born again Christian has God's nature.
Soul, in the Bible, it has to do with "this life", natural life, human life, the human person, self, mind, will, emotions.
the quickened human spirit, has its own capabilities: it can know, it can talk, it can see etc
But, we are so used to using our soul power even in our relationship with God, that we make no spiritual progress. We even try to understand God, faith and all spiritual matters with our human mind, instead of our spirit. (That is why the spiritual things are hidden from the wise; Mat 11:25, Luke 10:21). We have to withdraw from our mind. And focus on our spirit, where God dwells.
The Word of God ... is piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit. Heb 4:12 The Word of God shows us what is of the soul and what is of the spirit.
We only need to "just believe" the Word of God in our spirit. For example, we only need to believe that we are in His presence, not try to think with our mind: "what should I say?", "what will I feel?", "what should I think?" etc. But we have developed this habit to use our (human) mind.
For those who want to grow spiritually, I recommend "Experiencing the depths of Jesus Christ" by Madame Jeanne Guyon.

The combination of the body and the spirit is the soul. You are having a problem with terminology. You're also having a problem a physics, if a spirit is a form of energy, and we know that mass and energy are fundamentally the same thing at different frequencies. Then we do have a body that lives on after death. Plus you are predicating your argument on the an English text of Genesis, not on Hebrew. The fundamental understanding that the spirit was infused into the man after creation is sound.

    Lex
you need to look at scripture a bit closer before you make your claims....First thing stick with the Bible and forget wasting time what are religions believe. The Soul is immortal....The Bible tells us so. The scriptures to look at (Luke 23:43) Jesus said to the thief on the cross beside Him "Jesus answered him, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise." Jesus spoke of the richman in hell and Lazarus with Abraham in Paradise two real places (Luke 16:19-31) How about the mount of transfiguration where Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus (Matthew 17:1-3) How about the souls under the altar in heaven read (Revelation 6:9) How about the multitude of people in heaven standing before the throne of God (Revelation 7:9 )
Jesus also spoke of hell where the worm never dies (Mark 9:48) also look at (Luke 13:28) There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out.....Yes the soul is immortal...it will end up in either one of two places...(2 Corinthians 5:8) To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord ...but you still don't see that....
Also God knows you before you were born (Jeremiah 1:5) Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
You need to also understand our Carnal thinking and understanding cannot comprend the ways of God. This is what the Lord says..Isaiah 55:8-9 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord....My post is not to discourage you but to point out what the Bible says of the soul after death.
