Bands like Thrice got me into Baritones (especially Teppei) Ive never really been into the whole drop Z chugging thing and have preferred more of a playing style like you demonstrated here. Super rad video 🤙🏻
Thanks for this video. I had been eying a Gretsch but instead in May 2023 went with a Fender Squire Classic Vibe Telecaster FSR Custom baritone 27" scale which of course came tuned in the standard BEADF#B tuning and Squire puts on .014-.068 gauge round wound strings....but since I have changed to flat wounds (which I prefer and have on all my electrics as they're more comfortable and there's no squeak moving along the fretboard) and gauges .015-.060. I have also discovered some very cool alternate tunings for baritone guitar such as : AEADF#B. or AEADEA (DADGAD equivalent) or GDADEA. or GDGCEA or ADGCEA.
You managed to articulate what I was having such a difficult time trying to put into words. This is most definitely the push I needed to finally pick one up.
You gave a very nice demonstration of what it can do both in subtle tones as well as heavy metal. I loke the deeper groove of these & have only discovered them recently. Thanks for the video.
I love this guitar, and I change my old 7 string with one of this... For me the best thing is that a 7 string has only one string more than a normal guita but is a normal guitar playing normal chords and arpeggios... Baritone guitar can play beautiful low chords and arpeggios (sorry for my bad English)
A baritone guitar is like a 7 string with the high E string removed,, but it doesn't require a fat lower B string to get that low. Longer strings are naturally lower in pitch, so they can achieve the desired pitch without being slack.
I got one of these and the only major thing it needed done to it was a neck shim. Once it was shimmed, even my luthier was blown away by how good it sounded and played. Definitely a great guitar, I like it more than the Reverend Descent baritone I used to have.
Baritones are great for getting those low tones often reserved for 7 strings... 6 string necks always felt like home to me, I can't play with same confidence on a wider 7 string neck, so to get those low rhythm tones, baritones make a lot of sense. Really the only need for a seven string is if you still need that high-e, and if you're mainly doing rhythm, the focus is on the lower strings and further builds the case for baritone. Baritone, it's a 6 string 7 string guitar :).
Have same guitar and totally agree. It is a sleeper and for the price you get a lot!! Of course you did an awesome job showcasing this! Also glad to see you still have your Friedman SS100, scared me for a minute as that is like the GOAT for your style and vibe.
Thank you for the demo with this scale length in B standard. While the Gretsch baritone is just short of 30" Bass VI scale, everyone else who has a "30 inch baritone" seems to tune closer to Bass VI tuning.
Just got myself a Silver Bigsby model! I've also messed around with a 7-string, but I quit it; I think there's a nice logic & design to the guitar's 6 strings (asymmetrical though they may be), and throwing a low B on there, for me, just never could fit in with that logic. People say about 5-string bass "don't think of it as a 4-string instrument plus a low string, think of it as a 5-string instrument"; basically that 'native mindset' you were talking about. And with bass I think it's easier cuz it's totally symmetrical top-to-bottom, and most bassist aren't playing chords (certainly not 5- or 6-string chords). But that 7-string guitar? I couldn't do it. Best I could do was feel like I was playing a double-necked guitar; one with 7th-4th strings, and one with 6th-1st strings. I mostly wanted to play chords with a low inversion added in the bass, but I struggled to find more than 1 that didn't make my fingers play twister, except for standard power chords, but those are so close together; I wanted to play expansive chords; I think I'd need to like, tune in fifths, and totally relearn guitar to do what I had hoped for. So yeah, I bailed on the 7. But I do love the extended range sound regardless, and I've decided a baritone is a better fit for me, and I decided to go with A-standard tuning. The whole guitar is a full 7 frets lower than normal. Sick. I like the sound better, A is a more common key to me able to drone the bass on, and I also own a little piccolo guitar (basically a 6-string uke) which is also A-standard, so that just makes things even easier in the long run. I also have a 4-string Ibanez BTB bass (35" scale), which is in standard tuning, but I've always to convert it to B-E-A-D; tuned down to A, that would mean I'd have low A bass, regular E bass, A baritone, E standard, and A piccolo. Pretty cool. Ultimately I've decided not to learn the notes of A-standard, but rather transpose the music to it. Any time I spend re-learning all the notes of the fretboard in A is time I could be using to practice other things, and it could only serve to confuse me when improvising.
Sick playing and great tones. I've been drooling over one of those models but with a bigsby for ages. I think I would have ten Gretsch if I wasn't broke lol.
Awesome as ALWAYS Zach!! I'm postponing getting a baritone since always... maybe this is the one to get ASAP ;) Cheers buddy and please keep on rockin'! Nuno
Totally agree on using lower output pickups with high gain amps. Im using 2 bilts, one a baritone, in C and A with lollar el rayos into a fryette deliverance playing doomy shoegaze. That lower output keeps things tight and articulate. Love it. Great video btw. Also, have you seen the newer Aria Pro II Jet baritones? They look and sound great and are very reasonably priced
I've got the Gretsch and the Aria, besides some other baritones. The Aria is my favorite, followed by the Gretsch. The Aria has a magical neck PU. So chimey and articulate!
Awesome tones! I have this exact guitar in London Grey - Only thing I had to do on mine was replace the output jack with a proper Switchcraft jack. I'd be playing and all of a sudden gravity would unplug it for me. Otherwise, it's one phenomenal guitar for the price.
First tune is killer! great drop! you should release it. That is one gorgeous guitar too. love the jade colour. Whats your signal path/fx/ recording process? mix sounds great :)
Theres something bout this guitar that keeps me wanting one, ive listened to other baritones, i play metal, but even esp lacks something that this has, the only rival for me is the Jackson XT, but price wise this is a deal breaker
These pickups were much maligned when Gretsch was using them on their Pro range back in the mid 2000 to mid 2010s, but somehow everybody loves them on the baritones. Go figure :)))
Great tone! Did you ever try Digitech Drop pedal? Probably it won't be as tight as native longer scale guitar tuned down, but its very handy alternative to me. What do you think?
I'm holding out for an ESP Viper-1000 because I love the ESP necks & shorter length...but you are making me want one of these too.. You've made it sound the best I've heard with the stock pickups...even better than many with upgraded pickups which was another thing I didn't want to have to do.. Great playing, tone & beautifully done demoing what this thing can do. You got a sub. Question, how do you feel about an ESP Viper being modded with a floy'd rose? I know they have a version of the Gretsch with a Bigsby trem but they aren't great for doing Dimebag type dive-bombs or pulling it up. That's what I would like ideally...A Baritone that plays like my ESP MII Deluxe (90's model). Any thoughts or suggestions?
Great Sound !! You can make anything sound good: you have that magic touch. Only Baritone Guitar I own is a 1998 Danelectro: works for me on the old spaghetti western movie songs - Th Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and other songs by Ennio Morricone. For other guitars I just use standard D tuning: 2 semitones lower than standard E turning because I can’t afford another guitar. Lowering each string 2 semitones also works on my 1992 Ibanez UV 7 String.. Of course I’d love to have a Gretsch Baritone, but it’s not in my budget right now. 😁🌴🥥🎸 Still in Arecibo Puerto Rico 🌴🌴🌴Len🌴🌴🌴
I really dig the chord tones from a baritone, good guitar work - thanks for this demo! How do you feel this would work for a single guitarist in a rock/blues cover band?
I’ve been researching on the 7 and 8 string . Just not the sound I’m looking for Something about you playing has peak my interest on this guitar Like when I got my Gretsch 5410 , watching andertons from the UK .
My friend keep on talking about the 7 and 8 string but they don’t sound right and the way you play sold me on this guitar It has the high and lows just right . I have a Gretsch G5410T tri five electromatic , I’m using a boss Katana 100 watt amp. What’s your thoughts.
What tuning is he using here? It sounds like he may left it in its standard baritone tuning B to B as opposed to the extreme thing that younger players favor such as A to A with the low string in like C# or something like that. No, not normal C#. An entire f#%king octave down from C# which effectively makes it a bass VI. I think I'm going to give one of these a shot. It's a shame they stopped making the hardtails in the cool solid colors. Wish they would offer the jade green again.
Is the string spacing at the picing area (or nut, for that matter) any wider than a typical scale guitar? This is a big thing for me. I need wider string spacing. Also, is this B to B? Thank you!

I had one of those Gretsch baritones but i think it was a dud. The pickup heights couldn’t be adjusted and the sound and feel from the pickups was just so weak for some reason. Other G5260’s I’ve tried have been much better as far as I can tell
They're both extended scale length guitars, but from the factory, the Bass VI is setup a bit more like a bass. The Fender has a 30" scale so it's .25" longer than the Gretsch. It’s amazing how Loathe did the best commercial campaign for Gretsch baritones

Dude yes. I second this. Thrice are my favorite.
Congrats on helping Gretsch sell a bunch of these. Cool stuff, man.

Between this and your Cantrell Epiphone video you've earned an easy sub outta me, Zach. Well done. 👏

Thanks for the video, I really needed that sort of info: clean vs. dirty test sounds. Also I love the Sisters of Mercy shirt you go on!

You’re killing me Zach. I’m going to look at one in the morning. Unbelievable playing. As always.
That subtle riff at 2:50 is a HEAVY Incubus vibe and I love it
That intro song was fking sick. I loved it!

❤️ That's awesome. I'm no stranger to a JRPG haha. Thanks for checking out the video!
Maybe if I buy one, my jams will be this phat and dope 🖤
What a great baritone guitar! I hadn’t seen a Gretsch baritone before; thanks!🎸
Awesome chugs. And even more impressive clean riffs ❤
Thanks so much!
Clean to slightly dirty is where it’s at with baritones, at least for me. Love what you were doing during the opening!
That was a pretty killer riff when the drums came in!
What an awesome review, finally! Nice recording quality, great shots and overall structure of a review! Thanks man!
I just bought this EXACT model guitar FROM ZZOUNDS before i even saw this vid!!!! Its a killer guitar. My first baritone.
the guitar is cool but your sound and songwriting skills are awesome! Please make this a full-lenght song!
Thank you for the demo with this scale length in B standard. While the Gretsch baritone is just short of 30" Bass VI scale, everyone else who has a "30 inch baritone" seems to tune closer to Bass VI tuning.
In the intro track you produced one of the best guitar tones ever.
I think you just convinced me to get one of these guitars; this is the only video where someone tries to get a good clean sound!
Check out Mark Lettieri. He plays Funk on baritone guitars!
Just got myself a Silver Bigsby model!

I personaly love baritones. The tuning stability and intonation seems supperrior to shorter scale guitars IMO.

I programmed them using Steven Slate Drums. Thanks!

Hello. What tuning do you have this guitar tuned too?

They're both extended scale length guitars, but from the factory, the Bass VI is setup a bit more like a bass. The Fender has a 30" scale so it's .25" longer than the Gretsch. The Gretsch comes stock with .014-.072 gauge strings and the Fender comes with .024 -.084.
