I'm learning to play on a baritone guitar. It's probably not the most optimal approach, but it definitely has made me appreciate music theory.
I'm super glad when I find content like this because finding stuff for baritone is not as easy as standard electric guitars.
Definitely love the concept of letting the notes breathe, especially with low tunings. It presents a whole different atmosphere of the sound and that can really lend a certain flavour of menace and groove to the heavy stuff. Cool vid, I like when we get to see into your creative process!
Even with a 30" guitar I have been stuck in those "trash" riffs, but you just opened my eyes on what I need to avoid that... just to let my riffs breath xD Love you Ray and thanks!!

Really cool stuff. I worked on mapping out neck diagrams in a composition notebook to memorize where all the notes are on the neck in various tunings. I too have gone up to the 12th fret to get away from the first five in order to get different ideas!

ive always wanted to learn theory I taught myself how to play when I was 13 by listening to songs and just messing around finding the notes to play. along with some of my friends teaching me some song riffs and then later looking up tabs to songs. so I have a mental pic of what notes sound like but I'm sure theory would make everything make more sense and cut some time figuring out which note to play next. definitely saving this video! 🤘

Now, I understand why my 8 is going to be a lead guitar.
Where as my drop tuned 6 string is going to be purely rhythm.
Seems small. But, when you're trying to create entire rhythms with a standard tuning 8 and always falling flat on your face cause you don't quit grasp the difference between tunings and their uses. It's huge.
Thanks for getting me past that. I transfered what I learned from one of your videos to my jam session last night. It did make a big difference.
Thanks alot for your thought on writing riffs in low tuning, i don't play baritones personally(i'm a 7 string main usually playing in Drop G#) but i found the concept of letting the riff breathe and bounce very inspiring.
Your room type is one of the best for recording and mixing. The uneven walls and glancing surfaces amuses less use of sound reinforcement. I miss my old attic studio! The square room I’m in is a bitch to mix in!!

Awesome video Ray. I think it's important for all half serious players to learn basic street theory regardless of genre. It does not make you a robot....it just makes all the little things click .
As well as structured practice. People waste so much time unfocused. Simple 15 min intervals will lead to massive skill improvement shorter periods of time

Interesting stuff. I always thought you had a great style and tone for how low you play. Hard to get that tight of a sound when tuned so low but I love the options it brings. Also that gretsch sounds insanely good.
Im an E standard player but i always keep the Les Paul in drop B or slipknot tuning for when i wanna do some lower stuff and DO that same thing! I 👍 Yur way of explaining it Ray! THANK YOU BRO n them minor 2nds are crucial for say.. Coal chamber stuff

KILLER MAN! I love ripping off my own riffs too! I'm VERY interested in a baritone guitar now! (But I'm a lefty). Also I'm a bassist. Baritone rules! \m/
I compose based on jamming on how I feel and when something pops up In develop it. I don't think the instrument I'm playing changes that thought process because it's not about the instrument I'm playing at the moment per se. However, that's how I come up with music. It's so interesting how everyone has their own way of doing it.
Now that I think about it. There was a period in my life, when I discovered digital sequencer software, where I composed a lot on FL Studio (waaay back), by writing without knowing exactly how it would sound until I pushed play.
Before that, when I was just barely good enough to start a band, I would write lyrics first and then try to make the music I visualized for those lyrics.
So yeah, we all change and it's very interesting to see how others get to their ideas.
This was actually a really dope look into your creative process. Thanks, Ray! Also, since you clearly seem to be big on the dissonance, what are your thoughts on using tritones as well? I've mostly just seen them be used for low chugging, so I'm not sure how they'd work out for a more melodic riff, but they are dissonant as hell, and just might work out for ya. Cheers, man!

Thanks for this - I just got my first legit baritone not long ago and after I got tired of playing stuff like Misrilou lol it's like uh oh. This is really comfy to play (I always feel cramped on a strat/LP scale) but all my tones are different and the ones I do know have moved, so now...points of view and personal reasons why are helpful to build my own sort of bari-proper repertoire.

I've been acquiring a ton of basses lately so I haven't been able to give it as much attention as I want to; my bass chops are super crusty and it's something I'm trying to get good at enough to load in my primary slot sometimes. Expands jam opportunities too :-)
Full Disclosure: my primary loadout was originally French Horn, actually. But I've never been able to afford one of my own since grade/high school provided; when I can get the one I know I need to start back in with I'm going to be lost to the rest of the music world for a couple years while I get *those* chops back ;-)
You know, if you really think about it there is a LOT to like about life even if there's not that much going on in it.

@@xanderraymondcharles They have crazy pickups on em so they sound stupid nasty when you crank up the gain so so so dirty - that's what broke me in the demos. So they'll work for edge stuff like psychobilly and I'm trying to hook into a djentgrass vibe but it's not forthcoming quite yet HA
There is definitely no sane reason to own one, that seems pretty clear to me.
In process of getting my shop/lab/studio set up so we'll find out what hours I end up putting on which instruments.
I'm still definitely in an exploratory phase while building up my physical tone library.
But I will always gravitate towards a 26-27" scale, they're just very comfortable to me - most dreadnoughts are 26" scale already, which is why I think I've always gravitated to them (plus feeling that bigger resonance against your chest is cool too). I have an Ibanez 7 string acoustic that I think is 26.5 or 27" and I love the hell out of that thing. Talk about a campfire destroyer. No lie. It BOOMS :-)

So style-wise kinda mix architects and Norma Jean, yet nothing like either with the octave play and colorful intervals my favorite bpm are 110,140,160, 190
Do you have recommendations on how to learn the fretboard and/or get introduced into music theory without getting overwhelmed? I've looked online several times but to no avail. It also seems like the videos I come across doesn't seem to apply to the thall deathcore style i'm going for. I keep getting told to learn standard tuning chords and progress from there. It's just so boring and I hate to say this, but I don't really like playing anything that's not heavy.. lol
I'm a early beginner and trying to learn, should I get a standard guitar in your opinion or a baritone? I love the sound of a baritone so much more but I don't know if it would be harder for a beginner!

Hey SMR- I have a new esp e-2 7 stirng baritone in purple sparkle with black fishman moderns. Its badass and I can go all the way to drop F and E. SInce u love les paul style guitars I am wanting to get the esp e2 elipse 1000 in black natural fade wihich is almost silverburst looking but better imo, it only has a 24.75 scale so how do I tune low that? Thanks
Just curious what size strings are you using? 10’s ? Bigger ? I’m struggling trying to find a string size ? I currently use 9.5 low E strings I consider that size a happy medium. I know 9’s are way to small. Thanks hope to hear from you. Cheers

Beyond the octave stuff, do you just noodle around and find what key later? Sometimes it just sounds cool. Or do you really go for theory at first. “This needs be in the key of ___”? 🤔
Oooh good question. Noodle first, dissect later. I’ve never sat down and told myself, “ok I can only write in A minor” today. Again very good question!

Yea man, when i think of you i think of the guy that writes riff beyond the 12th fret and it is really awesome, we should start playing more around that area.
Some people have the action so low on the thicker strings that beyond like the 15th fret no sound comes out, because who the fuck plays there? (a friend told me this when i showed him the intro for toxic garbage island where you play a little bit on the 18th fret), i mean really wtf isn't that still a part of the instrument?
The default for me for writing or noodeling (and for a lot of peaople maybe) is the 7th fret (or 5th fret in drop tunnings) on the second string, maybe because that is how I learned the modes. I will try your approach because i think it is so awesome.
What inspires me the most is when i learn something new i instantly write a riff with that (it just happens), could be a new shape, a small chord, or the discovery that a random note works in whatever scale.
Anyway, in my opinion your style is really cool and unique, sounds more killer on a really low tunning for whatever reason, keep it up with those nasty riffs!
Our writing styles are so similar …just I do it in 7 …even on 6 its heavy n dark bad ass

In your experience what is the easiest way to learn or understand theory? I find it very tricky and confusing. Likely I make it harder than it is.
Hey dude! I honestly recommend hitting the books and studying everyday for several years. That’s the only way I could understand it. It takes forever to learn and it has to be something you genuinely want to master. I hope this helps!
Don't mindlessly memorize scales and modes. Learn all of your intervals, then learn your major and minor scales. If you can understand how intervals work and how they form a scale, you can understand any of it.

What's the tunning?
My biggest question really is how do you tune that low and not sound muddy? EQ wise how does that work?
Baritones don’t need much EQ because of that longer scale
Since I got a baritone I have changed how I write or what I write.

I think, technically speaking, its not a "minor 2nd" its actually a "flat 2nd" the distance between root and 2nd is the same in both minor and major. So half steps are flattened 2nds-as far as major and minor scales go. Again, I think.
Incorrect. A minor second is an interval in music theory. It is one half step away from your starting note. Intervals are different than scales.
I missed the one time you said interval early on. That is different than scale degree. Im not incorrect in what I said tho either. I was referring to scales

@@xanderraymondcharles cool I have been looking at the gretsch guitars for awhile and have found few I like I do like the look of the one you have but I play in standard E , E flat and drop D tunings don't play any baritone. But have been interested in getting a gretsch guitar for a couple years now. I mostly play schecter's , PRS, And ESP guitar's I have a few les pauls as well and one Ibanez but my schecter's and PRS guitars' are my go to guitars.
@@Rocktalk101 I have a gretsch streamliner junior. Regular 24.75 " scale. Comes with two humbuckers or a hum and p90 in the neck. I'd recommend checking one out. Love mine and they're fairly cheap too

Can't answer for him, but adding more strings doesn't help you play lower. Longer scale length does. A 25.5 scale 7 string in drop G will intonate like shit and sound like shit compared to a 6 string in the same tuning with a 27.7 scale.

Yes. Meshuggah, AAL, Jason Richardson etc. all play in drop tunings lower than G and that is the hardest stuff out there

Thats exatly what it is tho, it helps if you wanna make music that sounds good and listenable to people... wich is called being a sellout. So yes, for Pop metal its great, but "real" artists have a completely diffrent goal, wich is making "art" not well recieved music.
