My last pair of Hokas arrived just 2 weeks ago, the Speedgoat 5. My first run in them was a 3.5 hour trail run and they were ! So comfortable and cushioned. I also have the Mach 4 and have used it as my only road shoe leading up to my first marathon in June, including the marathon. I can't say enough good things about it, even with over 1100 km on the clock. Looking forward to trying out the Mach 5!

Great battle, I picked up the mach 4 at the end of June for gbp83.99 on sale. I am still a beginner runner who's working on running a faster 5k and so far I have found them more comfortable than my old pegasus 38s and have had less pain running.

The last Hoka I bought for road running was the Rincon. I bought it because it was light and quite soft. But had to give up on it as it was too narrow and gave me blisters. But my favorite Hoka (and the only at the moment) are my Evo Speedgoats and they are awesome!

Just bought a pair of discounted Mach 4 for 98€ here in Italy. I will use them as long run and tempo run shoe during the training block to prepare my next Marathon in November (Florence, Tuscany). I seriously hope that I've made the right choice, because of the so many good reviews about them...My last Hoka shoes were the Torrent 2 for trails and the Rincon 3 😜

My wife has over 500 miles running and 500 walking in her Mach 4s. She just got a new pair on discount. I stopped running in mine after 400. The SG5s are clunky. I returned mine and bought another pair of Ultra Glides for half price! Still a better shoe IMHO. Get better soon Seth. I ran through my injuries using the Level 2 training method. Slowing way down allowed me to run/walk while healing. I've since come all the way back to training for my first 100 miler. Slow and steady as you age. Wisdom my friend. Onwards and upwards!

I was late to the Mach 4 just based on what I was running in but the also got the 5 and already have more miles in the 5 - I am trying to work them both in I wrote a long review on RSG which I will post here as well but for sure my fave Hoka shoe out there. I posed it with a bunch of pics as well but here you go:
First and most importantly I think this is a super update, I think they took what was an already pretty enjoyable platform and made it better.
Due to some injuries I was pretty far behind on my shoe rotation last year so I am only recently in the Mach4 so I am not so far removed from the Mach4 and still have a lot of miles I will enjoy it for a long while still.
The two shoes look pretty similar although the Mach 5 comes in at about .4oz lighter it actually has a bit more volume to it which is a welcome upgrade. Both shoes feature a 5mm drop and from what I can tell the same stack height (I have not found values for this yet but if it is different I will update the post.
I have ~50 miles in the Mach 4 and just over 10 in the Mach 5 and did a test run the other day on an indoor track easing through a Mile and then picking it up for a set of 7 strides at the end attempting as base as I could to keep the effort as similar as I could.
The most noticeable update to the Mach is the replacement of the ProFly midsole to a ProFly+ midsole - the lower layer of the dual density foam is the same rubberized EVA as in the Mach 4 so the durability length will be similar. The 5's ProFly+is amazing so much softer of a ride than the 4 - it is the kind of tweak to foam that I think a lot of folks have been looking for in Hoka. I believe this is another of the SuperCritical Foams like we see in many of the other brands and its combination with the stiffer rubberized EVA in this model really sings. It is also helped IMO by a slight change to the rocker over the 4 - it was immediately felt when I switched between the shoes and when I took them out and put them against each other it was apparent that the curve of the 5 is a bit more present than the 4 which I never really felt that overy Hoka early stage meta rocker feel that I have in other Hokas I have run in, and I liked it.
The Upper is going to be a joy in the summer - the changes to engineered Mesh - make this a much more breathable shoe - additionally - I did feel that the Mach 5 was also a bit roomier in the toe box - and for me is a welcome change - when swapping from the 4 into the 5 it was apparent - perhaps I will try the reverse and see if it feels more restrictive. Along with the rest of the Uppse the tongue change is also welcome - the removal of the stitching on the inside could be bothersome for me especially if I did not wear socks (as I do sometimes on workouts) the new smoother aspect of the tongue feels great and the strategically placed padding is just enough to be able to tighten down on the laces and still protect the top of the foot while increasing breathability
I do have to say that the material in the heel collar was softer and more comfortable in the 4 - the 5 has made a wider mesh and seems to have a bit more material that can rub (again especially when you dont wear socks so sadly it wont be one that I do a lot of sockless running in.
Lastly the outsole - yeah its not going to be one that lasts a long time but you can see in the picture not a ton of difference between the 10 and 50 miles - Ill repost when I get the 4 to 100 as well as the 5
Final Verdict is obvious at this point the Mach 5 is a great upgrade to the 4 and will be for sure a big part of my rotation - but the 4 is still a good shoe that I will continue running in. The changes to the foam in the 5 I think make it a shoe that can move beyond the 4 in terms of usage - the softer foam give the shoe more range and I think is a better lightweight daily trainer than the 4, the little bit of extra firmness in the 4 may make it a more difficult shoe for me for the longer daily stuff, both performed well in the speed department - in the shots I got it feels like even though I had a bit more bounce in the 5 I was still able to have a slightly faster pace and cadence, however these measurements and feelings could be from being more warmed up as well. The 4's slightly more firm feel has felt great when doing track sessions where you need that immediate push off into a repeat.

Awesome written comparison, Kurt! It’s crazy how much shoe tech HAS changed from when the Mach 4 came out. I tested it in Mar 2021 and found it so lively and cushioned and fun to run in. Then proceeded to run in Novablasts, Endorphin Speeds, etc, so now I have the Mach 4s and they feel so firm, don’t feel the roller, and feel guilty that I never want to run in them. I DEFINITELY can’t get the v5 until I retire the 4s or they will never get miles on them 🤣

I loved the Mach 4 as a daily trainer and went out and bought the Mach 5 as soon as it was released here in Australia. I then stumbled upon a sale of the clifton 8 and my opinion of the Mach series has totally changed. The Mach 5 now feels flat, eva foam is supposedly old technology compared to the profly?
Not sure if it's because I'm a heavier runner and and clifton suits me better, the foam and the feel of the clifton beats the Mach for me.

I bought the Hoka Clifton 6 for daily training and long runs based on lots of good reviews. I found the cushioning lacked rebound and felt like it sapped energy with every stride. I did a test run in the Rincon OG, which seemed a bit better. Since wearing out my Cliftons, I've been sticking to shoes with 8-10 mm drops to avoid stressing my calves.

I’ve found great use in them for running off the bike during a brick workout when I need something for quicker turnover but don’t need to smash the run. I prefer the 4 OVER the 5 and would even pay more for the 4 - so Im THRILLED to be snagging all these cheap Hoka Mach 4 on discount. It comes down to fit for me and the 4 has the 5 beat at least with my feet. The cushion and overall feel is roughly the same. The breathability for me in the 4 was never a problem. The lockdown in the 4 beats the 5 - I prefer the tongue and the lacing. The Jacquard mesh is nothing to write home about - mayybe slightly more breathable but the material itself isnt like flyknit or the knit that youd find on an ultraboost that hugs your foot - I feel this is a trend across the new models - Speedgoat, Carbon X3, etc. The lockdown is only as good as your able to tie these and drawing the mesh tightly over my forefoot in the 5 is less pleasing than with the materials used in the 4. But the main reason I had to return my Mach 5's is that for the same size, there is vacant space between my toes and the top of the shoe that I never experienced in the 4s. Test it out - in store, compare the same size shoe of Mach 4 and 5 and youll be surprised to see the Mach 5 is longer than the 4. Lastly, I actually enjoy the Mach 4's wrap-around reflective tape on the heel. I enjoy the feel of the 5s, but only because it was like the Mach 4.
