Watching this match again, I am convinced that two Marus showed up for this tournament. GSL King Maru aka "The 4th Race" faced Dark & Shin while International Gamer Maru aka "The Trophy Giver" faced Serral. Hope to see one Maru show up for an international tournament in the future.
Dark got supply blocked at 58 for 30 seconds, didnt start his lair until he had almost 300 gas, skipped on making lings to hold the 2 medivac drop, got his 4th base canceled twice and his baneling speed was late. He didnt lose because of the mutas. He lost because he played bad.

If you watch this match with Maru's face/name covered and do the same for the watch against Serral a day later, you would definitely say these are 02 different players. I have been watching SC2 for almost 10 years, and I could tell that Dark and Serral are not in a heaven-and-earth gap. Thus, beating Dark 3-1 and then losing 4-0 straight to Serral on the very next day is quite doubtful. It's even more conspicuous when Maru was playing all out to counter Dark after receiving game-ending damages (especially in game 3, 40+ SCV died to Ling Bane, yet Maru still tried hard and dragged Dark to a base trade situation). Against Serral, he was like a sitting duck, waiting to be rushed by mid-game Raven/Roach. Those losses in Katowice 2023 against Olivera (when Maru was considered "God of TvT), in Katowice 2024 (0-4 vs. Serral), and now, were they all on purpose?
To be fair Maru is known to mess it up in the Finals of International Tournaments. He does not show it as in he constantly looks like it´s just another day at the work wither he´s losing or winning. But he has talked extensively about it; how it´s almost a curse at this point. If that is at all true I think Maru should get some professional help to overcome it because I agree; it does look strange when the player who has won 7 GSL can never seem to win an International Finals in SC2, even more so when he´s known as the King of TvT (I´m referring to the Oliviera vs Maru Finals of 2023). But I have seen the exact same symptom in 2 of my former friends who used to play Badminton and where one of them was always in the lead but always lost at the end. It´s a mental block-issue.
I agree that Serral isn't miles above Dark. However if you watch Dark's early game, not just in this match but in most games, he is definitely weaker than Serral in the early game. Dark shines in chotic games where serral controls the pace a lot more in a perfect defensive style early on. It's simply a playstyle mismatch. Darks weaknesses as a player doesn't mesh well against Maru's style where, I think, Maru overly respects Serral's insane early defense to a point of almost not knowing what to do
I agree. He didn't look like Maru as know him. I do think Serral has the edge over him, but not a 4-0 edge. He is losing on purpose, super tired and performing subpar, or respectful of Serral to the point that he becomes a passive player, which is always very dangerous against Serral. Heck, Maru has a way higher TvZ win rate than Oliveira does, and Oliveira went 2-3 vs Serral in the semi's. So, it is definitely odd.
It's like any other 1 vs 1 sport, sometimes it boils down to differing styles in the matchups. Like in boxing facing a southpaw is hard for some to overcome.
People the same shit with zerg when they produce 8 overlords. Thats the point of zerg to be able to mass produce a specific unit as needed. ALbeit drones, fighting units or overlords. They all are besto otimized when its mass produced. Even 8 overlords. Why do poeple commentate on taht being bad. Thats what you do as zerg when you are supply blocked.

@@kindenigma4119 Dumb argument, and you clearly don't know about the history of the game. Go look at the GGlord era, where broodlords meant an automatic Win for zergs. Zergs have already been the best race since 2018, their win rate is like 65% at the premier level, which is higher than Terran and Protoss combined. If anything they need far more nerfs.
