      Oral surgery to disabled orphans in remote communities.
      There is no social care in Vietnam so disabled children are left at orphanages.

    Love the "Fix-It" episodes as I spent a career fixing multi-million dollar jets in the US Navy. Whenever I transfered to a new duty station it would take me about a year learning the new platform before I began feeling comfortable with troubleshooting and affecting subsequent repairs. Your episodes bring back so, so many memories. Thanks for sharing.

    Great advice on double checking the buoys/moorings, I watched another sailing channel wrench one up out of the bottom because they thought they needed to be more snug on it to avoid swinging into a reef. It was never mentioned if they reported their mistake. I thought, well that's going to suck for the next poor sailor who comes to moor.

    • @davidgravlin6518
      @davidgravlin6518 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      New boats have issues. Just watch La Vagabond's latest video (structural failures/cracks) and The Wynns (can't go faster than 5mph due to poorly designed prop, and their engine is overheating). RR's watermaker issues should not have happened, although it's not clear if this is a problem with the watermaker mfg or with SW. But a watermaker issue is no where near as serious as structural cracks (La Vagabond) or a vessel that is severely underpowered (The Wynns). Not being able to go more than 5mph under power is a significant problem, especially when your engine is also overheating.

    You found our favourite anchorage Ko Yao Yai. Such a great place. Hope to go there soon again.
    About the yellyfishes. My wife’s from Indonesia she says they are a type of moon jellyfish and may not be deadly like in Australia but you can become very sick from their sting, never touch them, nor Swim in between.
    following you and several other sailors, being involved in the sailing community as sailors and we do insurance and flag registration.. we noticed you had more than normal failures that should not happen. All things considered We would never consider the brand given the failures we have seen. You should really talk with them. Such a steering failure for example should be impossible. It’s a flimsy glue instead w a sturdy over dimensional piece laminated in with additional reinforcement. It’s just unprofessionally done ( my opinion). Go over the whole boat and let them make it right. Because we both know that the English Channel/northsea is a very different environment from swimming pool asia, had steering failed there in a storm… then what? Stay safe

    As for jellyfish (jellies), basically all jellies have some amount of toxin in their tentacles. Some, like the box and man of war, are considered extremely poisonous. Some other jellies have a very mild toxin. Most jellies are somewhere in between as to their poison level. The problem is, everyone is different; what is mild for some people can be deadly for some other people. Best to play it safe and avoid contact; unless you have a good marine biologist on board. Hope you are both over your colds! All the best!

    4o years ago we sailed our new in the Chesapeake for our honeymoon.Our first sail boat for but my wife had very little experience. After anchoring for the night, my wife jumped into the water and a cluster of stinging sea nettles. With her screaming, I realized that there was no way to get back of the boat. In a few minutes which seemed much longer for her. I managed to winch her aboard with the topping lift. She still speaks of that night and her black bikini. We are still together 12 boats later.

We were both fortunate to have never had an "encounter" with jellyfish out there-although plenty of our fellow cat sailors sure did.

    You two. Nick, I still remember yr two-episode description of the tools you kept aboard Ruby Rose one. Excellent. Must say now that, after following yr experiences with Seawind n those of Harbors Unknown, my earlier impression of Seawind as a leader in modern, high tech, ultra designed n engineered boats has fallen drastically. As a French cruising friend used to say about some people, complete with Latin facial n arm punctuation, "in my mind, they go down". As to yr comments regarding the complexity of modern boats -- most of us who have been in the boat biz for decades, n also been serial boat owners, shake our heads n roll our eyes ( n oh the stories we tell), over the degree to which the odds are stacked so much against the average person just hauling off n trying to own, much less cruise a decent boat. Your comments after the steering issue that wasn't are so important to spread far n wide. Whatever the boat, new or used, proceed with caution n with smaller steps out of yr great big dream. Also -- n speaking here to the engineers n designers as much as to owners -- it's mostly just the smallest things that are the root cause of the problems, that, n the way the small things can accumulate so damn quickly. Well, nuff said. Best wishes to you both, n kudos to the way you handled yr over-long build saga in Vietnam, with learning the language, n yr dental work.

    The level of seemingly poorly designed or executed parts and montage amazes me, especially on an expensive piece of equipment that is meant to go far from the beaten path. I'm sure this is probably not only true for Seawind. I would expect even the smallest part of any ocean-going vessel to be of the highest standard....I'm an engineer and the built quality I'm seeing here is just unacceptable. You're being very civil about it all.

    • @TTM-GEB
      @TTM-GEB 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I agree, the build quality and attention to detail is seemingly poor from Seawind. Even the davits on this boat had to be changed out because of a bad design that experience should have caught. The new HH44 Curiosity that the Wynns are sailing have not had any of the problems like RR2 is having.

    • @esce69
      @esce69 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      To be clear, I never owned a boat and my comment was not on Seawind, but build quality in general. The HH on the Wynns' channel has issues and so does the Rapido on another. They just don't seem to be about bolts coming loose and badly connected hoses. These look to be avoidable faults. I did own several new cars. Imagine the outrage if new cars had similar issues on the same level, and that would be deemed normal. Manufacturers would be in trouble. (I'm not saying new cars never break down, but mine didn't) In boating this seems to be something that is generally accepted, even to be expected. I'd expect any well-designed and professionally built new machine to be trouble-free for a while. This is only my humble opinion...as a non-boat-owner.

      They do sting ... but not serious. The bulge in Oceanic jellyfish pooulations is a sign that the water has become warmer and the food chains become more eutrophic.. but instead of fish or whale populations growing to feed on the plankton growth ... The jellyfish populations are booming ... Send in the sea turtles and Moa moa Sunfish 😁.... trigger fish and a few sea birds..
      Thats why they are vunerable to getting plastic bags caught in their throats and guts 😢
      Jellyfish rise and sink on a diurnal pattern.. usually.
      If they are high up they are feeding or sunning if they have their own algae on board that photosynthese.

      Equal and opposite - I worked for British Airways IT division for a few years and wondered if that made me more exposed to bugs from around the world. Nick & Terysa are, possibly, less exposed than most people, being "isolated" on a boat.
      But they pull in to areas where few people may go, exposing themselves to more unique and unusual varieties of 'ordinary' bug ... maybe. I suspect it all balances out.

    You always report problems with your new boat, especially with the hydraulics. I also follow Tula's with the Cat 1170 which also dealt with initial problems. Interestingly, until a few years ago there were no reports of major problems with the Cat Seawind. Do you think that since they started being produced in Vietnam and Turkey these problems have appeared?

    • @sailingrubyrose
      @sailingrubyrose  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Not at all- I don't think any manufacturer has had so much focus on hulls 1 and 2 of two brand new models before. I think much of these issues are normal teething problems. The hydraulics weren't a problem at all- the little tab that held the floor panel up failed (it was just glued on- should have been screwed in), the floor panel slipped down by an inch and fouled the steering. Sorry if that wasn't clear in the episode! SW have been notified and it's now been rectified in production.

    • @PedroPaulo-bd5ik
      @PedroPaulo-bd5ik 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sailingrubyrose I mentioned hydraulics because you reported problems with residues in the water tanks, filters and accessories. Tula's, for example, replaced all the hull strainers and valves right from the start. That's why I mentioned the existence of initial problems, which could be related to the new shipyards and other production methods in Vietnam and Turkey.

    I fully expect quality issues on a new boat, things will break, which is why we have a shake down cruise. But putting the wrong fitting in the plumbing system isn't a small lapse in quality, it's a major defect in the production process. Given that Seawind knew this was going to be a show boat, mistakes like that are shocking.

    • @dennisash7221
      @dennisash7221 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree I have been watching other channels with new boats and it appears that this boat has by far and away the most issues.
      One can expect some but it just never seems to end and some of the issues, like the connector, like the parts falling out and snagging the rudder, like the waste in the water tanks, like not putting lock tight onto the screws on the mast ... these are not normal they smack of lack of care and lack of quality control in the process.
      On the other hand there is one manufacturer in South Africa that has even worse issues. So it's kind of like russian roulette a good company with great track record only needs one screw up and they loose their credibility.
      I remember Nic raving about the the quality of the finishing, seems that was a little too early and superficial.
      I hope it all works out and it seems SeaWind is not walking away from it all so that is positive.

      @@dennisash7221 Disagree. La Vagabond has a major structural failure documented in their last video. The Wynns can't go faster than 5pm under power due to prop issues, and their engine is overheating. I'll take an issue with the watermaker over structural failures and engine issues anyday.

    • @dennisash7221
      @dennisash7221 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davidgravlin6518 I think it will be better to categorize the issues and understand what the beef is with SeaWind.
      Sketctosea had the top section of the mainsail guide broken at sea, this has been identified as a design error they under estimated to forces on that rail on such a big boat and it meant that the mast had to be removed and the channel redesigned and replaced. This is not a quality issue it is a design issue that they corrected.
      La Vagabond similar issue, they under estimated the forces on that section of the boat that holds the mast, again a bigger boat than they had designed before and lets face it the sail that boat to it's limits. This is going to put them out of the water and will cost quite a significant repair, this is an engineering fault that was difficult to predict accurately.
      Curiosity II engine issues are with one engine of the four they have on board and the pops were experimental they need to fine tune so this was not a unforeseen. Rust in the engine water could be an installation problem or an engine problem we need to wait to find out.
      RubyRose has had a list of issues that are indicative of sloppy workmanship and lack of attention to detail which is really the last thing you want on a new boat, it's not as bad as the issues that Leopard are facing but.
      1. Nuts/bolts/studs without thread locking - (to me this is sloppy workmanship, every manufacturer of machines, cars, boats etc knows that nuts, bolts, studs work loose under stress and thread locking is not something you "forget")
      2. Contaminate in the water, they were lucky, amebic dysentery is debilitating and if not treated can incapacitate you - dirty water tanks is simply not acceptable. Algae in the water, so far I have not heard anyone leaving their boat at anchor or on the hard for a month or more saying they came back to water tanks with algae in them.
      3. Connectors that were wrong material and type
      4. Parts falling off into the steering mechanism ...
      The list of things that went wrong is long and mostly as a result of sloppy workmanship and lack of attention to detail and lack of pride in the work by the workers. for two years we heard how much pride they took in their work but for the past few months the reality is that, not so much.
      SeaWind should be embarrassed by the number and types of errors and issues on the boat, they should put a program into place at the factory to educate the workers and correct the problems, these are the kind of problems that will turn customers away from them. So far HH has stood out above the rest, SeaWind has them to use as best practice at the moment.
