Great clip, loved the trip around the depot...but the crowning moment was the look on Pete Waterman's face when he saw the nameplate, that will never age, great supporter and promotor of the railway industry in all its forms and well deserved.
Hi Geoff....very disappointed you and the entourage never visited our shop...Bogies at Crewe...seen many of your videos and as a avid train enthusiast....been at Crewe for 48 years....I blame Mark Derbyshire! knows me well! good vid....still doing mending trains from class 40 to electrostar....happy days...
It's another inside job from Geoff! I've only ever been through Crewe as a passenger, but this was superb behind the scenes coverage. Just scratching the surface here, it must have been absolutely fascinating to be able to have a go around the depot and works. It is just amazing how much work goes into keeping the railways going, and I can't imagine how much planning and work it takes for you to get this type of access to share with us.
Hey Geoff, I hope you don't have to wait 75 years to get your name on a loco. You do a great job to publicise the culture of the railways and someone, one day, will recognise that.
It's great to see you being invited to these places and given the opportunity to share your experience with all of us. Looks like you really enjoyed yourself.
I remember meeting Pete at the Chester Cathedral at the making tracks 3. It was such a cool experience for me, especially since I want to work on the WCML when I'm older!
Great video Geoff, brought back lots of memories as Crewe is my old stomping ground. I remember going to a Crewe Works open day in the late ‘70s and standing beneath a class 47 that had been lifted up by one of the massive cranes in the depot. Many of my schoolmates got apprenticeships there in the early ‘80s. I recall a long summer of train-spotting in 1978 at the far south end of platform 1, watching class 08, 20, 25, 31, 37, 40, 47, 86 & 87 locos going hither and yon.
I have to admit: I haven't heard of Pete Waterman before. The RBF, not with that acronym, but of the Railway Benefit Fund I have heard. However, I'm afraid I don't know too much about them, their work, their impact and importance. (Gareth Dennis might have mentioned a few good actions.) So, I would very much welcome a video presenting the RBF, and maybe even Pete Waterman.
2:15 New York City Transit does this on its fleet too. I believe they're called "multi-wear wheels" (but don't hold me to that). Each wheelset can go through multiple trips through the wheel-truing machine before becoming condemnable.
The orange and black livery looks very familiar to me because it comes from the Genesee and Wyoming which is a huge short line operator in the US and related to Freightliner. Oddly the old green livery looks a lot like Chicago and Northwestern so there may be a connection too
Sorry Geoff should have said abit more great video as usual as always and Peter Watermans face when he saw the plaque onthe train..nice gesture from the freight company to name a train after him.
Well I learnt how a nameplate gets put on a locomotive, Brilliant video Geoff and years ago there were groups who did yards tours at Crewe Basford Hall in groups and used to be lovely seeing the locos in the yard. Also great to see a loco named after Pete Waterman
Nice Geoff! Currently at Innotrans in Berlin (highly recommend it), Stadler Class 99 was unveiled (002 in full GBRF livery), very impressive. 001 currently on test in the UK.
What a lovely chap Pete Waterman is - what a great honour for him! Quick question, do they have a shunting loco at the works to get the class 90s in and out of the shed?
Trust me it shouldn't be 😂😂. The last bit of the old Crewe works has been turned into housing Estates. Walk down west street past dunwoody way go past a Care home past the more housing, walk by fast food places and super market, walk by a cinema, bingo hall and bowling alley turn left past a pub go by tesco and then you get to crewe heritage center.
Yeah theres not much in Crewe, The heritage centre next to the big tesco is probably the only interesting bit left. Also side note they turned the pizza hut next to the cinema into a Taco Bell, like its a disgrace
I'm sure I remember Virgin painting one of their rescue diesels pink... the one called Lady Penelope. Perhaps it was just the name-plate having a pink background, where all the others had the blue worn by International Rescue. Still I'm sure there was some pink involved...
A personal request. This seems something you would do, I’ve always been interested in what happens in the MPV depot at Effingham junction in Surrey near Guildford. So if possible could you maybe visit that please?
When I see a vid like this I always wonder what the total workforce the rails support in the UK. With the extensive behind the scenes staff and admin/ tech along with the forward facing force, it must represent a significant percentage of jobs.
Great video, but I have to say I really dislike that G&W Freightliner livery. Much prefer the classic green/yellow of the 66s and 90s. Also, at the Bogie Shop, I loved the statement about “I used to get hands on, but now I’m a team leader”…. Yep, exactly what I say every day.
Never knew that LNER goes to Crewe. Since when LNER goes to Crewe from London King’s Cross or from Edinburgh Waverley via Leeds/Manchester Piccadilly. Some of the Freightliner Class 90s came from Greater Anglia.
Pete Waterman, the man who made the 1980s so iconic. And he always seems such a genuinely nice bloke.
Wish he'd just stuck with trains to be honest 😅
@@rich_devoto And deprive the world of Rick Astley? Or KYLIE? How dare you! 😂
@@domramseyand Sinitta, Bananarama, Mel & Kim....
It's only a matter of time before there's a train somewhere with 'Geoff Marshall' on the side of it 😊
Let's hope so!
Can we start a petition?
Do you mean one named after him or him clinging on the side to avoid the fare?
@@I7275-p2d 😂

Aha! Good old Basford Hall :) Where I drove my first loco… at 5mph 😊 Spent many an hour in the grey building next to the VMF on my traction course!
hey Ed!! aaaaah, lovely. it's a cool place and nice people, yup!
Great clip, loved the trip around the depot...but the crowning moment was the look on Pete Waterman's face when he saw the nameplate, that will never age, great supporter and promotor of the railway industry in all its forms and well deserved.
Always great to see Pete Waterman. A true legend of the railways.
8:42 - what a legend, loves his local community and wants to see Crewe and the youth do well. A proper 'railwayman' - coming from a Grimsby Town fan!

Thats a great video Geoff, I enjoy this content. And; Stacy Thundercliffe - what a great name !

thank you!
Working there rn, sat in a class 66 out front
Pete Waterman, legend, gets a loco named for him and about time too.
Legend.
Shout out to Mr Smiths in Warrington!
Nice work Geoff. Keep up the good work.
A+ Getting a chance to see the folks behind the scenes that make it happen (!!) Well Done
Your vids are always good but there was definitely a feel-good factor on this one! Thanks
I met Pete Waterman a few times at East lancs railway when I was a kid. Good bloke.
Awesome! Always saw the Freightliners there in the background of TrainDriverBrian’s videos. Hope he’s still there at FreightLiner
He should be so lucky!
Fab video. Very interesting. I loved how surprised Pete Waterman was! Greeting from Australia
Hey Geoff, I hope you don't have to wait 75 years to get your name on a loco. You do a great job to publicise the culture of the railways and someone, one day, will recognise that.
Saw you at Ealing Half this morning (tried to shout encouraging things your way), am now on a renewed TH-cam binge ☺️☺️
Great video. At least now I've seen where bogie instability on Pendolinos comes from 😂
It's great to see you being invited to these places and given the opportunity to share your experience with all of us. Looks like you really enjoyed yourself.

what could have been a dull tour of the works you make interesting and lovely. Spot-on Geoff.

Words that I learned since following Geoff: Moquette, Livery, ...

Wonderful. So uplifting. thanks Geoff
Thank you for sharing this video Geoff it was very interesting and fascinating. ❤
Amazing video, loved watching ❤👍 crewe depot is so interesting, I love seeing so many 70s, 66s and 90s just parked up together
well done... a great video from behind the scenes... Pete Waterman OBE is a legend 👍🏻
Love this video and congrats to Pete!
Great video again Geoff!! Fantastic to see what supports train services across the UK!
Great work.
History recorded.
Genuine surprise on Pete Waterman's face. Great that you all managed to keep the secret. When is Geoff's coming?
2:15 New York City Transit does this on its fleet too. I believe they're called "multi-wear wheels" (but don't hold me to that). Each wheelset can go through multiple trips through the wheel-truing machine before becoming condemnable.
That G&W livery looks nice on those locos
So nice to see such passion in the workforce there. Great video Geoff.
May end up seeing this tomorrow, as I've got about an hours lay-over at Crewe in the morning, coming up from Long Eaton on the 1st service.
Those Freightliners are classy looking…
The orange and black livery looks very familiar to me because it comes from the Genesee and Wyoming which is a huge short line operator in the US and related to Freightliner. Oddly the old green livery looks a lot like Chicago and Northwestern so there may be a connection too

Great episode

Such a cool insight into my main local station!
Me nodding along… we all know what a ratstack is 😂 thanks Geoff for asking him
I thought he said Rad Stack. Stack of radiators to cool air! 🤔✔🇬🇧
Love Crewe
Wow that's amazing. Keep it up Geoff
Looks like they have a good maintenance crewe
Nice Geoff! Currently at Innotrans in Berlin (highly recommend it), Stadler Class 99 was unveiled (002 in full GBRF livery), very impressive. 001 currently on test in the UK.
90s are the best ❤
Another great and interesting video Geoff
it must be great to have something named after you, when you're still alive :-)
3:34 That is indeed a honking big air reservoir.
I've only been to Crewe once. I changed trains (Swansea up to Glasgow I think) and bumped into John Prescott on the platform.
Awesome Video Geoff
Take a rad stack out dudes! Cowabunga! 🛹
What a lovely chap Pete Waterman is - what a great honour for him!
Quick question, do they have a shunting loco at the works to get the class 90s in and out of the shed?
well done pete x
I work here at Crewe building the Railway.
I know Basford hall like the back of my hand :P
Where did the rivets go to @ 5:00 ?
Have there been any open days at Crewe? I think it was 2002 Adtranz last time i was there. 🤔👍✔🇬🇧
Who else thought Pete was going to fall at the end, when he was hanging on to the side of the the train, next to the zero safety issues poster 😂😂
Nice video
You met my friend Lenny today, he is very happy
Legend has it all train staff get on at Crewe
Nice video. You seem to get the best out of your guests during the chats. When you let them speak 😅 interesting stuff.
Crewe is *definitely* on my bucket list!
Trust me it shouldn't be 😂😂. The last bit of the old Crewe works has been turned into housing Estates. Hi from Sydney 🇦🇺
love the history
Do how fast on the tube lines

Great Vid. Got any vids of Pete's model railway? If not why not
Nice video. Have you been to Ashley Down yet or are you still going there?
W😮W How amazing Geoff 🙂😊🚂🚂🚂
So, are you going to get Pete Waterman to do Choo Choo Chat with you?
Ah, Crewe Works. Where the Princess Royals, the Coronations, and the Black Fives were built.
At first I thought you said they were naming a loco after Dennis Waterman. I was SO confused!
Great video Geoff
Not the only pink loco on the nextwork, isnt their the DB platinum jubilee 67 thats also pink? 🤔
Mr. Derbyshire sounds like John Cooper Clarke.
When I see a vid like this I always wonder what the total workforce the rails support in the UK. With the extensive behind the scenes staff and admin/ tech along with the forward facing force, it must represent a significant percentage of jobs.
fourth again, this is so cool Geoff, keep making vids like this
I still think Freightliner's green livery looks better than the orange.
Putting G&Ws livery on them is a weird choice
Green and yellow looks way more modern.
Supposedly Nunney Castle No 5029 is at Crewe awaiting a boiler replacement. Did you happen to see her or any of the heritage locos? Thanks.
If people who operate trains work out of that location, does that make it a train crewe depot?
Nein. It will be Crewe Train Crew Depot! 😂👍🇬🇧
did you get chance to speak to the guys from green signals while you were there? would love a collab
Pete's locomotive will haul a whole lot of rolling Stock but not so much Aikman.
guess the Pete Waterman loco won't get held up by a Roadblock!
I'm guessing when he said the only pink loco on the network he forgot about GBRF 66734 in the Platinum Jubilee livery 😅
I wonder if he thought it was going to be named "The Locomotion"?
Is Pete Waterman still president of the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire steam railway ?,
Never knew that LNER goes to Crewe. Since when LNER goes to Crewe from London King’s Cross or from Edinburgh Waverley via Leeds/Manchester Piccadilly. Some of the Freightliner Class 90s came from Greater Anglia.
It was a mistake. He meant London North western
It's not LNER it's LNWR. London north western railway. Different company to LNER
Ah now I understand. LNWR. Thanks 👍
Geoff, when are you having a train named after you?? You have done more for trains than anyone I know!
One day...
1:55 what about 66734 & 67007? 🤣
