I’m not a big fan of EF MS, but I’m actually a bit fond of Guncannons, specially the RX-77D, probably my favorite version of the bunch. The RX-77-3 comes in 2nd place, but it’s one of the features it shares with the RX-77-4 that I want to talk to you about: the beam cannon. My take on the RX-77-4 is that it was developed at California Base after its recapture, which is interesting, since it suggest some of the captured facilities and data could have been used for its development. Case in point, I’m aware of the conflicted background of the MS-06K Zaku Cannon, which some older sources claimed it had a beam cannon, rather than a ballistic one, partly the reason the EF and Titans were still using it as late as UC 0087. While this claim has been obscured overtime by other depictions of it using a regular ballistic cannon, with 08th MS Team we saw a push to show a different larger cannon that could better fit the description of an oversized artillery piece that cause balance issues. Games like Target in Sight saw proper Zaku Cannons with this weapon and we also figured out that it is the same cannon used by the bulkier MS-09K-1. On a related note, California Base also later produced the MS-05L, which on paper sounds like a very similar concept: a beam weapon powered by a secondary backpack generator. Back to my original point, maybe the RX-77-4 were created using the data and facilities used to produce MS-06K with beam cannons, using RX-77-3 units to first test it out. The fact that the RX-77-4 is using a single beam cannon like the MS-06K or MS-14C is what began making me suspicious of this. Other weird details of the MS-06K are its legs, which seem awfully similar to the YMS-09 & YMS-09D, which always made me wonder if they could imply that it was meant to hover on the ground as well. On paper it would be something similar to the Recksnow from G Reconquista: a ground hovering unit with a shoulder mounted beam weapon. The more recent addition of the MS-06GD, a OYW ground hovering Zaku, to the Zeon roster only further convinced me that such design do might be possible. In an old mechatalk thread I recall Mark saying that maybe the original intent was for the MS-06K to be related to an older iteration of the MS-06R3, from MSV rather than the M-MSV version: www.mechatalk.net/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=15863&start=60#p355769 Incidentally, giving the Zaku Cannon ground hovering capabilities as well might fit well with the idea that the Gelgoog can pretty much do the same with its leg thrusters. What do you think?
I didn’t even know that the RG-78AV was a thing until till this video but I can’t find any info about anywhere not even in the fan wiki including the rest of the federation mobile suits in twilight of zeon
Wouldn't the RX-77G Guncannon Ground Type be considered a GM cannon since it is a GM ground type with the Guncannon's arms, parts of the legs and the backpack?
From what I remember, the Guncannon Ground Type is like the Gundam Ground Type, made with V project spare parts. It even has the same Max mode limiter to ensure stability between the different parts of Various quality
Yeah thinking about it like why did no one think okay let's build a secondary generator with a big magazine and a double layer railgun instead of a shoulder Cannon or keep the cannon the way it was but put on a extra generator and mount hip railguns for extra firepower and the generator could power other thrusters so it can move better on Earth and in space
@@swakage13x that's pretty much what they did with the White Coral, but that would be super expensive on a large scale, and not very possibly by OYW standards
Those are exclusive to the Origin Continuity, which is a distinct alternative branching of the UC mainline continuity (what you would call canon, but isn't canon because Japanese medias dont like that very concept)
No precise reason, but it's worth nothing the GM III outcompeted the Nemo III that followed some GM Cannon's design baselines, and the Jegan itself outcompeted the Jeed which had its own X2 variant that transformed into a Guncannon/Loto lookalike. In the GM III case it's likely it never received any Cannon variant because it appeared in the early era of fourth generation MS. When everyone is spawning 25m behemoths with half a dozen of beam cannons as the new standard left and right, it's probably better to give your new mainline GM the capacity to carry around a lot of missiles, than spending money in a GM III variant with a single cannon (that isn't going to scratch any Zaku III armor any day of the week)
@gundamfacts could always go with the shoulder mounted beam cannons, but not really arty at that point, also kinda just what war war had evolved into at that point. Im not well acquainted with the 1st neo zeon war, but the 2nd was basically just in space and had no real need i guess
@@gundamfactsis the GM III was a rush refit for Kalaba and the EFF it was a merging back in to AE basically took the stock GM II and replaced the generator and backpack with the one from Gundam MK2 and added more thrusters based on the MK2 design it's support loadout was just adding rocket pods to the suit. They still had the GM Cannon II units the AEUG was using.
