  • Part of living in a fish house is being able to catch some big fish on leech lake this year. Caught a couple large Northern Pike, a couple nice Walleyes, and a few small Perch. I didn't know what to expect on leech lake, but I think after this trip ill be back. It was fun to catch my personal best walleye while I was here!

NOW ya found em!! 24 or 25.5 inches are some nice walleye. Still good eating at that size, but they are mature fish once over about 20” so I generally put them back to make more walleyes😂😂. I see you doing the same!! Nice.
We have eelpout here I learned. We always called them “ling, ling cod” for the longest while, then, in Alberta anyways, they are generally called “burbot”. If you ever take the time to skin them and eat them you will be pleasantly surprised, if you like fish. Sometimes called poor man’s lobster. 😂. I haven’t had any for a long time, 30 plus years, but remember them as being the only freshwater fish I somewhat liked. I have since learned to properly filet & cook fish (not cook it until it’s dry or have to pick the bones out of pike haha) and quite enjoy walleye, perch, pike, sauger, and probably burbot, or eelpout!!
Leech Lake is turning out to be a good lake!! You are doing well!
    Catch ya later, Eh!!

Yeah, I like to put the big ones back, if I get one 28+ I'd probably get measurements and have a reproduction made.
I've had eelpout before, but only filled and fried and I liked that! I've wanted to try boiling one in salt water and see if it tastes like lobster. I have also heard to boil them in Sprite? I've been spoiled having fresh fish on the lake over the years, so I generally don't like it at restaurants anymore.
Leech lake was fun! Thank you, I'm enjoying this time! I'll be heading to a couple other lakes here in the next few days, so I'll see how that turns out! Thanks for watching!

Those are some quality fish for sure.
Could you do a breakdown of weekly cost type of thing? Just the expenses like road fees and how they work , propane , gasoline , bait , internet access, etc .

Yeah, I've been keeping track of some of that as far as fuel costs and things, I should be able to put all that together.

@@didyoujustgethere thanks. Our ice seasons have been steadily worsening for 3 decades here. East end of Lake Ontario

@@BigDan7114 is that due to ice conditions and weather? Or is it being over-fished?

@@didyoujustgethere Ice. Been a few good solid years but not many drive the truck on the ice days here anymore.
Zebra muscles and Goby’s bothered a bit but once perch sheepshead and others figured them out they are a good food source.
The whole planting and harvesting schedule for our farm has moved forward one month since 1800’s. Plant end of may Harvest into November , December.
Plenty of pressure here as well I lived on Oneida Lake many years. The pressure has increased immensely and Lake dynamics changed majorly with zebra mussels and goby but it’s doing well.
The old days of filling buckets of big perch in a couple of hours are gone. But walleye are flourishing. But fish are quality.

@@BigDan7114 that sounds interesting, I have yet to fish that region. I may have to make my way out there sometime as I've only ice fished in northern Minnesota.

How’s the diesel heater working? Thinking about purchasing one for my fish house.

It's been running almost 24/7 since I installed it. It's been really great, I probably use 1.2 gallons a day on average.

@@dennyb5509 yeah, it's been pretty good. I've only had a couple issues with it flaming out in -20 degrees Fahrenheit and below, but I think that was my fuel settings.

For the walleyes what was your most successful bait and lure combination?

    • @didyoujustgethere
      @didyoujustgethere  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I was using fatheads and some small yellow and orange jigs. The big walleyes hit around midnight with a dead stick about 6 inches from the bottom.
