Guided Sleeper Shack Rental! (Not what we expected . . .)

- Hello All! This episode of DE Outdoors we drove 11 hours to Waubay, South Dakota to ice fish through a guide in a sleeper shack! The trip was long but the stay was relaxing. Fishing was tough and the guided experience was not what we expected. We planned on targeting mostly walleye and perch to bring home for the freezer but ended up just looking for some relaxed time away from work. You win some and you lose some! We learned a lot from this trip and i explain some of our findings in this video! Next time we want to fish for 3 or 4 days straight we will most likely stay close to home. If I was the owner I would have supplied some fishing info sheets and a free box of the lures/rigging that the locals are using.

Everyone knows that with ice fishing there is no guarantees, however, if you're paying THAT much money, and using professional guides, I would expect to have at least a little action, and I would expect too shelf service, which they did NOT recieve, so he has every right to be a little pissed, wish he would've given us the name so people could avoid being ripped off as well!
I would say that for a Ice fishing guided trip, just fish with run and gun guides and let them know what your expectations are.
Sleeper / family shacks are a big no no as they are oriented towards comfort.
The service you were describing was specially bad.
That being said I know many guides who will always fill your limit run and gun but struggle with decent success on the shacks they put.
Covering water is a big part of the success.
Only species I would recommend getting a sleeper hut would be that for Burbot

This is how every sleeper house rental is. They claim “guided sleepers” but really it’s just a glorified camping spot on the ice. Rentals are geared towards guys who bring their own stuff and go do their own thing. Also booking a snobear/portable trip is actual guiding.

that's called fishing there's no guarantees you just have to enjoy your time together. and the experience of being out on the ice and in a nice sleeper house. it always helps to go to the bait shop talk to some of the locals where they're catching fish leave that sleeper house and go there during the day and fish.
Lol no talking to the bait shop is guy is the last place you want to ask for advice!! These folks live there, thats their fish, they're not gonna put you onto the fish so you can catch your limit!!! They're definitely NOT going to put you on a Hotspot!!! Sorry but that's reality these days, there are very few good honest people out there, most of these people don't like tourists coming into their territory, even though tourists are what keep these people going! Of course this is not the case with EVERYONE, but unfortunately this is the case far too often! I lived in a very small town for 5 years when going to college, and I met locals over that time, became close friends with a few, and in this situation, the locals were not too fond of tourists/students, its just the way it was.

Book a portable or snowbear you will absolutely hammer fish. I go in a portable every year up in Webster. Only one day in like 4 years we were short of a limit and it was about 5 fish short.

You are absolutely correct to put a review up because if you don't there will be a lot more people get snagged just like you did. Guide service should have made it crystal clear what services they provide. If they did then they should explain their story in your comments section. Looks like they cater to people who do not fish and are just looking for a guy's weekend out.

@@DEOutdoors Call Artie's in Big Stone (Ortonville). They're the best in NE SD with sleeper shacks. They check on you 2 - 3 times per day, and have no problems moving you. I've rented from 2 guides on Bitter (Waubay), neither measure up to service you get from Artie's.
I make that exact same trip every year. Difference being we rent a cabin in Webster that we can go back to every night. Our group brings portables so we can be mobile. Don't even have to be knowledgeable with the lakes. Just have to be moble to find them. After 8 years of going. we've have only 4 to 5 really good outings. Best part is being out with the boys and enjoying the time together. Sucks to hear about the guide service! Sportsman's bate shop in Webster is more then willing give locals and non-locals information on lakes & slews that seem to be doing well at producing fish.
Yeah if we go again that’s what we will do, we heard it’s a lot better to be mobile(I mean that’s normally how I fish in my area) but it was a good experience still!
My buddy drove from Ohio to Lake of the woods to stay in an sleeper shack, over 16 hrs, they caught 8 sauger all week, supposed to be a guided trip as well. He was very disappointed.

That’s the bigger difference between a sleeper shack rental from a guide vs an actual guided trip. A guided trip you’re going to be mobile and catch more fish. If you want just a sleeper shack rental then some guys will bring their own sled shack and move and find the fish. Otherwise they can move it a little here and there and base it off of spots that have been doing well, granted fishing is still fishing and has its slow days. I’ve drove hours plenty of times and came back with nothing even after drilling 60-80 holes all over a lake.

Theres HUNDREDS of great lakes (1 hour drive) around Waubay......if you cant get a bite, the fish arent biting or youre not trying.

In my experience...ice fishing "guides" simply rent you a house. That's it...the rest is up to you. Pretty unfortunate. Then you hear, " You should've been here yesterday."

Always do your homework. Some guides just set houses n others find the fish n put their house on them.
Look at reviews. I have had cheap trips that were awesome n expensive that weren't. Now I only go with guides that I trust. Fish bite in certain spots at certain times n a good guide knows that

I had the exact same situation happen to me and some friends , thankfully we are avid fisherman so we went out with our portable shacks and smashed fish. The worst thing was he put us on a lake we didn't wanna be on. Pretty much took our money and ran. I now have been fishing the waubay area for 14 years and don't need advice from any guide. Your bad review was warranted.

This is how i would fish webster area if i didn't live in SD, stay at a hotel or cabin. All the lakes are within 30 mins about. You can move around way easier, when its pickup traffic anyway, fish out of the pickup. Don't do a guide, just use a Navionics and do a adventure. That or do a guide for one day and if you get on fish, then you wouldn't need them the next day. And just do one person guided. Plus don't do a guide that says "put you on fish, or have fish pass through", you didn't pay hard earned money to have fish pass through. I understand fishing is not guaranteed, but you should get more than 3 fish for a weekend. Way more
I had the same luck with fred's beds out of baudette on LOW, No fish minus a couple sauger. Terrible.
Yeah the poor fishing happens sometimes, just needed some more effort! I will say this company called and apologized and offered to make it right which I appreciate.
I like Fred's Bed's, but there beds are not made for people 6' 6"

We did a redfish trip in Louisiana and it was amazing! Service was so good. That’s the only other guided trip I’ve been on as well, normally we just self guide lol

Thats long way too go . For it to be shitty. Try long point lake of the woods next time. Always pretty good fishing. Great resort. Your guide that's really shitty of him. He should of been on top of things.

Well I can’t remember actually lol I should also mention that since this video went up they have reached out to me and told me they want to make it right and offered a trip on them (which I could not take). I would suggest booking a guided pop up trip instead of a shack cause they will put you on more fish
Being from South Dakota that is a plain shitty experience and guide who was just looking to make money, knowing guides from the area that is not a good experience plain and simple, my advice to you if you plan to come again would be a guided snow bear for the day they know where the fish are biting will take you right to them no problems, and maybe rent a shack to sleep in to catch walleye at night, right now there is a hot walleye lake, night bite a lot of guided shacks on there, in the end it is fishing and sometimes they don’t cooperate but I would be very upset if I was you with that guiide.

Wasn’t a guided trip it was just a sleeper rental. Around here those are two completely different things. Not saying the guy you rented from was very good though for not giving advice. Usually they’ll at least tell you what’s been hot lures. It’s hard renting a sleeper to stay on the bite unless u can move constantly.

I’m glad to hear that! I was hoping this video would help some people out! The experience was great and it was wicked comfortable and chill just not exactly what I expected! ( I was also told by the owner that his employee did not follow his instructions so I can understand that too)
That’s tough man. You pay the money and don’t get into fish. I have been there just never had a guide involved. Guides should be more involved and at least putting in the effort to try and get ya on fish. Fishing can be slow and that’s fishing. Guides should at least make a effort.

The guide service got your money and that's what they wanted. And you got to camp out. Tell people that they are no good they did not care so why should you.

Ive had that happen on multiple occasions as well, i honestly think there are operators out there that don't care about their customers, its all about money, many people don't realize that a lot of these operators don't like tourists coming and pounding their lakes with fishing pressure, so they will purposely place their huts over unproductive areas, essentially guaranteeing nobody catch any fish!!! They're not good people, they're about milking as much money out of their customers as possible!! Of course this is not the case for ALL operators, but it does happen, so dont just book with anyone, do your research before booking, because there are alot of arseholes out there that care only about getting your money!!
