It's a shame this is the only 2D animated Western film for theaters this year. 3D animation is just dominating other companies such as Disney and Dreamworks. I miss hand-drawn projects. Even though there was a mix of different software in this movie, I appreciate the movie for what it was when it comes to stepping up it's animation.
But wasn't Lewtoons disappointed in the Princess & the Frog, which was meant to be the first attempt for a triumph return to 2D animation? Goes to show that how it's animated doesn't automatically make a movie good.
Chaotic Neutral there is a 2d film coming to theaters from the U.K. Ever heard of cartoonsaloon, the creators of The Secret Of Kells and Song Of The Sea? They've made a new film called the breadwinner and it looks amazing I highly recommend watching the trailer and the movie when it comes out
The worst thing about this movie is that it was released too late. If this had even been released back in 2015, it would have been a bigger success because the Brony community has been on a decline for awhile now. It also doesn't help that the movie was leaked a few days early and a bunch of us don't exactly support the show by watching it when it airs, but afterward by other means. My theater was pretty empty. It was also Friday, opening day, and 11 am, not exactly the rush hour for movies. I was there and four families were there, and I'm not sure if the one family with the teen with some disability was there because he was a fan or if it was just because they wanted to go to the movies and knew this would be something that wouldn't overload his senses because every now and then he'd say something that suggested to me he was not exactly there as a fan. The other three kids were the target demographic. But yeah, I was totally in on this movie and it was awesome, and I've been following the show since 2012. So really, if the movie had been announced in 2013, and released in 2015, I can only think it would have been at the very least more financially successful and helped keep the fandom more active. I'm excited for Season 8 and I have heard rumors that there would be cameos of characters from the movie making appearances (I doubt with the same actors, but you never know), but I have no citations to back that up, so take it with a grain of salt.
It is my understanding that bronies are a small number compared to the number of kids that watch the show that is the target demographic. It is also to my understanding that the number of views by the target demographics is lowering that much it is basically the same as when it started. The number of sales to kids far outshines any product that is for the bronie fandom. And of course all the pirating and the number of bronies making profit off the IP that hasbro gets nothing of. It was clear that the equestria girls movie was Hasbro dipping their toes in the waters to see if their was any profit to making a full fledged movie not made in flash was worth doing. However you are probably right in saying they would of probably made a bunch of money back in 2015 without having to do the equestria girls and making a bigger movie such as this one. However bronies watching it will have minimal effect on the movies performance.
I don't think it leaking did much to this movie's success, to be honest. Bronies are too loyal a fanbase to not see it in a theatre (and are not the majority of the fanbase), and kids don't know how to pirate. There's a lot of doom and gloom about this movie's box office figures as well, which is irking me. Sure it wasn't a breakout success, but it wasn't a flop. Hasbro doesn't make most of its money from films: it makes it from toy sales. MLP is one of its biggest brands right now.
MatsuyoRific or Starlight, or freaking DISCORD. The God of Chaos might possibly be helpful on this trip! Or the strongest unicorn in Equestria, what about her? I assumed they were cut because the movie would be over in 5 minutes if Starlight and Discord were there.
Lewtoons Sadly I don’t believe gage got her own song, however, she did sing a duet with Manolo at the end And also hi! I love your videos. Always pursue your passions and have a great day
Some of the more subtle character acting type animation nearing the end of the film really stole my heart. Over and over. I heard that some reviewers called the animation "lacking"... I think they saw the wrong film somehow tbh
fizzycolalizzie In a way I can agree due to the animation being slow and dragging in many areas, like the scene with Spike and one of the bird pirates playing the drums. There I heard the drums before I saw them move to hit the drums and that is bad. Light moves faster than sound and if the images are delayed enough that they don't line up with the music properly, it easily takes a person out of submersion.
fizzycolalizzie The 2D animation of slick animation is FABULOUS. Especially when were are used to seeing still fanart or the show. This is almost lullaby of a princess levels of beautiful art (but it has better animation obviously)
Kick high dragon, yeah! I definitely see what you mean about Lullaby for a Princess, the animation itself in the movie is definitely better but in terms of effects and colour choices and stuff like that I think LfaP wins.
fizzycolalizzie My Little Pony the movie is at its best! The best movie of 2017. Now, I have not yet seen it. But the criticism has to stop. Tara Strong and the rest of the cast done a very awesome job on the film. Now, I'm a brony and I'm proud of the hard work and dedication to this film. And those of you that doesn't like the movie, suck it up. MLP friendship is magic and the movie are to stay.
You were ridiculously positive in this review, especially compared to most of the critic reviews both on Rotten Tomatoes and on TH-cam. I have watched all seven seasons, read all of the comics, read some of the official books and even read several fanfictions for crying out loud! I am as much of a hardcore fan as I could be, so you could say this movie was practically made for me (yeah yeah, I know it was technically made for the target demographic of little girls, but let's not get bogged down with the details here). So yeah, I thought this movie was okay. I definitely wouldn't show it to a non-fan. The movie wastes no time introducing any of the Mane 6, which I don't mind. But what I do mind is how little time some of them get to shine. Fluttershy and Applejack in particular are just there and don't contribute much to the plot at all. I also think there are too many characters, many of which are pretty flat due to them getting so little screentime. The pacing is also insanely fast and the story itself is pretty standard and predictable. This movie could have been a lot better, but it was okay for what it was. I'd give it a 7/10.
that's the problem with the current staff, they attach boulders on their hooves, they limit their imagination to make the movie and show "for little girls" and learned nothing from Lauren Faust's ideas, they learned nothing either from other shows like Gumball, they learned nothing from japanese animation or even the best model, the fandom. the fandom is a hundred times more creative than Vogel's obsession with Disney and political correctness. These people live in the past and are a problem, bottlenecking thre potential of the animators and other writers. The animation was top notch for a fairly SMALL budget movie, and if the scenarion were better, it could have got some award or distinction.
I thought it had some great comedic parts and some good emotional moments. What I don't like is how some of the problems were resolved. Like the fact that it just took some stowaways to convince the parrots to go back to pirating and that after Twilight said a few words to Tempest, Tempest was suddenly totally fine with having a broken horn after going through all this trouble to get it back. What do you think?
Here is how I see MLP. Season 1: Overrated and honestly the weakest of the series. Its a good but not great first season. Season 2: Certainly an improvement but still a few kinks. Season 3: Noticeably short, but still fun. Equestria Girls: Its like if High School Musical was somewhat tolerable. Season 4: Wow......that was epic! Rainbow Rocks (Equestria Girls 2): Better everything! :D Season 5: A bit too overly reliant on fan service, but it gets the job done. Friendship Games (Equestria Girls 3): While I prefer Princess Twilight, I do enjoy Sci-Twi, and I loved the conclusion to Sunset Shimmer's arch. Season 6: Honestly its WAY better then the fandom gives it credit for. Sure it has a few kinks, but honestly Starlight Glimmer was a lot more interesting as a reformed character then she ever was as a villain. Legends of Everfree (Equestria Girls 4): This was just a genuinely fun time. :) Season 7: This is tied with Season 4 for my favorite season of MLP. MLP: The Movie: SEAPONIEEEEEEEEESS!!!!! :D
On my initial watch, I had wondered if Twi's decision w/ the pearl was an "out-of-character" moment, perhaps even merely a contrivance in place to separate her and propel the other members of the Mane 6 to the final act. After some thought, though, I came to the conclusion that it's an important moment in Twi's movie story arc. What do I mean by that? The entire story seems to show Twi struggling with trust outside of Equestria, a region that the movie makes a point to depict as being in a dire state. She feels its her sole responsibility to save their home as the last remaining princess, and while she'd normally love her friends' assistance she recognizes that Equestria is a very different place from the rest of the world. She's willing to give them a chance when they insist on coming, but both with Capper and Dash giving their position away Twi comes to the conclusion that she can't trust her friends in such a different environment. After she's done the deed, she questions whether she'd have been better off without them (mainly the action of a mare under duress). It's at this moment that Tempest Shadow acts as a proper Anakin to Twi's Luke, someone who took that path Twi just considered. Empathizing with Tempest's story, Twi realizes she couldn't even trust herself. Of course this is then countered by not only her friends arriving to save her but also by friends they made along the way. Again, it felt like a very odd decision in the moment, but ultimately it serves as a great challenge for Twilight Sparkle after these past 7 years.
"...with action scenes not possible on the small screen." Oh Lew. You really need to stick with watching the show again. You'll be surprised with the action in the show post-season 3.
Ross Pit: Shark Hunter Excuse my rudeness, but if you think the action scenes in the movie are better than Twilight Vs. Tirek or even the flashback battle we got to see between Nightmare Moon and Celestia, you're fucking delusional and need to watch those fight scenes again. Me personally, my biggest complaint with the movie is that Twilight and Tempest didn't have a magical showdown at the end. It would have been nice to see Twilight fight back before she was captured. Maybe they could have fought, Tempest got fed up, and then used a paralyzing spell to immobilize Twilight for a few hours.
Perhaps I worded myself poorly. The action in the film, not just fighting, but action, are more detailed than in the show. Something like Twilight Vs. Tirek was great because it was shocking. They are fantastic scenes, but when you look at when Tempest threw that fish bro to the ground, you could feel the impact more, compared to Twilight getting thrown against a mountain. But, ummmm, uuuh, what's the word I'm looking for? Ah, yes, kiss my ass, you douche. Yes, that's it. Just because I have an opinion, doesn't mean jack shit, buddy. Some people dislike the show, and I don't call them "delusional". I'm not excusing your rudeness, just because you told me to.
1:48 The Smurfs TV show was never so good, but don't diss the original belgian comic series though! It was an actually smart commentary and critique on society, and none of the smurfs media produced afterward caught that.
_Sylvain Hunter_ THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH FOR SAYING THAT. I've commented the same thing countless times but no one gives a shit. *Les Schtroumpfs" as written by Peyo were amazing commentary on the problems of our real word society. The bunch of guys that picked up the job afterwards gave us some okay stories but now it's become childish stupidity.
So their will be a problem with the next movie if it is lower than either of the films. Lets say he likes it more than boss baby but less than his fan rank of mlp movie. Should it be actual two or actual three? It gets even worse if he numbers it after his normal critique review. He didn't create a precedent for the numbering system when he told us about the numbering. I am willing to bet he will take his fan review out of it because he isn't a mlp reviewer, he knows a lot of his fan-base are not mlp fans so he probably shouldn't keep his fan review.
*SPOILERS* great review! i totally agree on the Sia part. the song was forced in and out of place. I personally (as a 'die hard' fan) felt the movie was too short, since in my eyes the new locations didn't really get a chance to shine.. in the comics they do get a lot more background, sure, but this movie really had to rush through all the locations to make them fit within the time schedule. the ending also didn't satisfy me all that much, like you said a more classic kind of song would've been a lot better for sure. we didn't even get answers on wether or not the mane cast's actions saved the other towns like the desert one somehow, or whether or not the Seaponies went back to their original destroyed town to fix what was lost. nonetheless I loved the movie. did you hear Hasbro teamed up paramount for 'future projects'? I wonder what it means..
It's not a fantastic movie by any means, but it was such a refreshing experience that it totally felt worth it. I'd also be amazed if this movie cost less than $10M to make. I hope that encourages other studios to give this type of 2D animation a try.
Man I have to disagree with you on this one, I think whatever style they did here looks even worse and clunky than their normal flash animation. And flash animation cost a lot less as well. However this review made me really want to see it when it comes out on dvd, the only other review I have seen on it was really negative and I wanted this movie to be good.
He is right that if you're not a fan of the show, this movie will most likely not persuade you. As for the visuals, are you sure you're not just too used to the show style animation? It's been going on for years.
Finally a good professional non biased review with a fan perspective and not being ignorant and "hurr hurr it's ponies so gotta make fun of it" review *COUGH COUGH BLACK NERD COUGH*. I haven't watched the show in years and in fact lost a lot of interest but I didn't want to miss seeing the movie in theaters as I love when cartoons get high budget movies, and I ended up loving this movie a lot. Might watch the show on netflix again. The damn songs get stuck in my head so easily lol.
Dude, I took two friends with me to see it. One was a brony, in fact, he introduced me to the show(though, I became a brony before him. It's an interesting tale), and a non-brony. We were originally going to leave the non-brony behind because he has exclaimed before he had no interest. But I was telling my brony friend about how I was going to ask for the ticket(I would walk up to the ticket guy, take out my sunglasses, put them on, and with a cool voice say "Two tickets to the My Little Pony Movie, please"), my non-brony friend was in the room, and was intrigued, and said he wanted to come with. Also, I was paying for his ticket, so there's another reason he came along. Along the way, he had said as both a joke and being completely serious "Don't be shocked if I walk out of the theater". And frankly, I had shown him an episode of the show before(per his request), and he didn't like it, so I wouldn't have been shocked had he walked out. He sat down, the film played, and nearly the entire time I was looking over to him, wondering what he thought. I couldn't tell, but then came what I consider to be the funniest gag in the film. In the desert scene, Pinkie talks to a cow skull or something, and it's pretty funny, but then later in the film, we see the skull on the pirate flag, and Pinkie said "Hey! I met that guy in the desert!" I busted out laughing and looked over, and to my delight, my non-brony friend was nearly rolling on the floor he was laughing so hard. He went out of the film thinking it was good, though he probably isn't gonna see the show anytime soon.
Until now every review I saw was saying that the movie is not very good so I was scared of watching it. Seeing you being positive about My Little Pony The Movie makes me think that perhaps I just should go to a cinema, see the picture and then on my own decide if it's good or not.
Maera Fey If your not a brony I think its a fun film to just turn your brain off, but if you are a brony it is like a gift from heaven with so much eye candy and side characters
I actually watched it with 3 other high schoolers.I don’t think it was that bad. It brought me some enjoyment. I liked the Discord reference and the Hungry Hippos joke made me laugh. Also, Fluttershy should of spoke more.
I'm a fan of the show, who stopped watching after Tirek (Name's probably misspelled.) since Netflix was slow with putting on seasons after that. I loved how this film was 2d animated, the animation is amazing. Honestly it's style I REALLY love. Where things kinda move more slow and are just really pretty. The movements are just so pleasing to look at. Especially the lip sink. Some people complain about how it looks but I don't really get why. I think it did a good leap to the big screen. I liked all the background gags. Like Trixe in the intro I think Starlight making a cameo near the end and DERPY being the one who got frozen instead of Twilight! That's just awesome, like you said this movie was MADE for the fans and UNLIKE that train wreck of a Ninjago movie this one just feels more like everyone cared about what they where making and wanted people who liked the show to enjoy it. Rather than drag in a ton of random new audiences just to find out "Hey! This isn't AT ALL like the movie!" Also best villein death. XD OH MY GOD he got SHATTERED into little pieces! Probably the most gruesome death in the series! (Outside of MAYBE Sombra.) I like Tempest, and how she was a fleshed out villain WHO GOT A SONG NO LESS instead of evil cause potatoes. Not enough villains now a days. Also I just LOVE how she was animated. Like JEBUS the way this mare carries herself you KNOW she means business! Her abrupt attitude changes and eyes really show her emotions well. Honestly I thought the Sia song and the pony design was pretty fitting for the movie, I didn't see her as a popstar tho since I had NO idea who she was outside of a pony that appeared in the movie to sing a song. ^w^' Also they used a pop song parody kinda of "Got the beat" at the beginning. It also helps Rainbow was just a good song tbh and I like the way it was sung. I could see people being upset about the screen time of the other main 6, but I saw it as Twilight's movie and it was more about her ark.
I'm a big and involved fan of MLP and the movie was very pleasant to me, nothing beats the show of course, but it was definitely nice to see them go outside of Equestria and meet new people and stuff. I hope you do catch up with the show though, there are some hiccups in it as with any show, but it's good for the most part ;)
I'm glad your back watching the series! You'll probably would love season 4 especially the episode "Pinkie Pride" but that's all I'm saying. I won't spoil it for you for. "YOU HEAR THAT COMMENTERS DON'T SPOIL IT FOR HIM"!!!!!
It was a really fun movie. Even traveled across the country to watch it with some friends. Only gripe was that SIA didn't belong in the movie. It was a bit "out there", other than that, I did enjoy the movie very much. Waiting for blu-ray release so I can own a physical copy
I loved the movie but I felt like pinkie pie was in the screen too much and almost got a headache from her sadly fluttershy hardly had any lines which dissapointed me because she is my favorite pony :/
I didn't see the movie but a lot of times in the show when she isn't getting character development she is usually being a headache and in your face about it more than she needs to be. I could imagine that a full length movie would get more than unbearable. However I do love the episodes where pinky gets development because the writers put some actual thought for her in those episodes.
I think they're trying to integrate her into the Friendship Ambassador role more seriously by giving her this amount of screentime. Pinkie and Twilight are such parallels in terms of characters sometimes that it makes sense to have her be in this movie a lot to show where Twilight went wrong.
MLP shouldn't have two spots. I understand your reasoning, but I still disagree! This list has always been from you perspective as it is, so just rank it how you feel! Plus, others have said it why didn't you just split the difference & put it @3?
I know nothing about MLP and while Im sure its a lovely little show, I dont really care to ever watch it. But daaaamn that's a good cast behind this movie.
You are a trooper to make that previous MLP video, and it was the video I found when I was looking into the show around the time you actually posted it. Thank you for making that video.
hi i'll be honest i have never told any one this before but i'm a fan of MLP. i'm from South Africa and not long after the NEW series premiere world wide it started airing here in south africa and i was never a fan of the series then i started watching it and i'm hooked but i'm not that big of a fan to call my self a bronie. i'm just a fan that watch the show and i'm thinking of watching the series online from the very beginning just to catch up with the story-line. And after watching this review (Thank Lewtoons by the way) i'm looking foreword to the movie when available On-demand.
As an MLP fan, my main complaints would be that the Storm King wasn't well developed (I feel they could've given him a bigger presence) and I feel like the 3D backgrounds clashed with the 2D animation
This has to be the greatest review of the movie I have seen so far! I really loved all the points you made and your explanation about the movie not only to fans but also to outsiders of the show is perfect! :) I really hope you continue watching the series since season 7 has been amazing! ^^
After you finish watching the MLP series can you do a countdown of your favorite and least favorite MLP episode, characters, songs, moments, villains, and movies?
I think you're taking this too seriously. I have seen all four movies and this was just a joke about being in denial about their existence. Sorry, if I failed at my attempt to be funny.
My younger sister loves my little pony and I actually enjoy watching it too. But the movie to me was alright. I just couldn’t get over the way the animation. It is crisp and colorful but the way they made their eyes and mouths annoyed me. It made them look weird so it was hard to watch :/
Coincidentally, other than some cameos, this could be a direct sequel to the season 3 finale. Starlight is reduced to a non-speaking, blink-and-you'll-miss-it role, as are Cheese, Ra-Ra, Sassy Saddles, etcetera etcetera. In fact, the only post season 3 character with a speaking line is Party Favor, and it's literally just shouting "BRIAN" when a balloon animal is crushed.
I tried to see it as a non fan, I still think that its pretty much plain in my opinion, I'm rather surprise that there's more positive reviews from the outsider's perspective
being a brony myself, I was "blown away" but the movie itself, but I did have a great time watching it in theaters. the animation was way weird, and hard to get used too, but for a movie, it looked really amazing in many places. I'm so glad you did a review of it, and I'm glad to hear you liked it so much. here's to hoping to see more mlp videos from you in the future.
Also heard there were a lot of guest animators who worked on this project too!! A very small artist on tumblr ended up animating a tiny section near the end, and honestly I think it's really cool they let her do that.
Your MLP video is how I found your channel! If you're watching the show again I would highly recommend giving the Equestria Girls movies a chance! The first one's not good, but the second and third are great. Rainbow Rocks is honestly my favorite thing in all of pony. And if you've got a hankering for villain songs, it has three!

Are you going to review the Pokémon: I choose you movie? It’s only in select theaters for a few days (from the 5th-6th and 11th and 14th), but it was technically in theater. I, unfortunately, will not be able to see it. :( But I would love for you to review it.
These are my thoughts about the movie, if you want the short version, here it is. (With spoilers) It had some ups and downs, but it was a solid movie. Okay, here's my actual thoughts. I watched the movie as a brony whom adored the show. I saw the characters as reasonably well-defined, and in that, it made for a story that didn't have such redundancy in the development. This is what I think the movie did right. The songs are beautifully written, and it's a competition between One Small Thing, Open up your Eyes, and Time to be Awesome, that is my favorite song. Capper is astoundingly voiced, and his character was flawlessly written. Seriously, holy Faust, this guy was amazing. Twilight was realistically developed, with her low point being one very relatable, but also sad. Tempest was a wonderful villian, and played well to twilight being so out-of-world as a pony that knew the world inside and out. This was a wonderful call back to the twilight that had been thrown into a world that she couldn't understand, as the series doesn't seem to do that much justice anymore. One thing I think deserves its own category is the animation. The animation is so beautiful, and such a good blend between making me want to see the movie, and making me be okay with the show looking how it is. However, I thought that it was very slow. It felt like the characters were slowly moving through, and it was a bit annoying, I will say. Now, the things that I think this movie did wrong. Fluttershy and Applejack were so dull and removed that it felt like they weren't even there. And that is a complete travesty, because they are great characters, and casting them away like that really made me feel bad about this. Tempest as a villian was astoundingly written, but her redemption was just as dull as any other redemption in the series (excluding sunset shimmer). Grubber was one of the worst comic relief characters ever, he was flat, stupid, and removed all of the emotion whenever something would happen, and instead of it being a relief of tension, it just feels like a character that we could do without. I mean, we already have pinkie pie, I don't know what else someone could ask for. The plot was so horribly paced. It seemed like the ponies would rush onto different locations before developing the characters, and in that, if it weren't for time to be awesome or one small thing, I would have forgotten the pirates and the sea ponies. With exception of Skystar, she was too adorable to forget. The only plot pacing that was well made was with canterlot and the alleyway town, wherever it was that Capper was in. There, the plots were very slowly developed, and it gave a lot of time to fully flesh out the characters, before moving the ponies. The writing cast should have either removed some places to give more time to develop, or they should have made a longer movie. Also, storm king sucked. Finally, I think that the plot is mostly formulaic, at least for the show, with first having the three princesses removed, and then having the ponies go through some conflict and win with friendship. I think that this would've gone better if the princesses were actually not turned to stone, but they rather had changed their colors for a few minutes to make her think that they were frozen. They should've tried to find queen Novo themselves, while the others did their own thing. They eventually meet up at the land of the seaponies, after twilight steals the ball and is cast out, and they tell her what is going on, and that is when Skystar hears and understands to jump out of the pond and help pinkie, whom had already been through Twilights low point. Maybe have them comfort her, while seeing the ship and all of them getting out to fight Celestia, luna, cadence, and twilight. They engage in an epic battle, and they fend off a lot of them, before finally being taken down by tempest, who traps them all in separate cages. Tempest sings twilight a song, and then sends her up, where she can see the other princesses, they are powerless, but the others see them going back to canterlot for the storm king. They are taken to the storm king, as the other ponies fight against the other guards to get in. Here's how I think the final battle should've happened. Storm king sees the princesses delivered, and tells them to be taken in, grubber doesn't exist in this, and the princesses are left to think about what is gonna happen. Tempest enters and begins the ritual, as the four are forced to succumb to her forces. They are drained of power, and the storm king becomes powerful again. He creates a violent storm to show his power to the ponies, and agrees to release them if they listen to his every word. While doing that, tempest asks for her horn in a moment of desperation, and he tells her no. Tempest is so infuriated that she uses her horn to create a blast so powerful that the wand is broken. The blast had blown the storm king down to the floor and killed him, but also released the princesses. They all power together, as the mane five stars at this event. Tempest, scared, but still upset, tries to fight this, but is eventually shot down. She falls, but is saved by the remains of the dead storm king. The princesses decide to do something nice, instead of kill her, and while tempest thinks that her life is over, the princesses actually give her a horn to use again. She is not relieved from punishment, and is sentenced never to enter Equestria again. She agrees to this, and leaves immediately. The princesses and the mane six come together, as they finally celebrate. Sia sings, and the movie is over. Started out as criticism, but I eventually just forgot and started writing what I thought should've happened. Overall, the movie was good, but it could've done better.
as a long time collector of all gens of mlp, this movie made me almost cry at some points, and made me super happy at many others! and i loved the ending, bc i have a guilty pleasure to emotional and catchy pop songs.
How do you compare friendship is magic to the older generations. Obviously I jumped on the bandwagon when FiM came around. I just couldn't get into the older generations.
If I were to pick something I like about the movie, I think it would be seeing new races outside of Equestria. This movie was clearly meant to do the things that can’t be done inside the series itself
as someone who's recently been fading out of the series (I only watched 4 episodes of season 7) the movie didn't live up to the hype for me. It might grow on me later just as Brave did but I'm not entirely sure. A lot of the animation and effects are good except for the 3D backgrounds that just look fuzzy. Also the trailer mainly built up on Tempest, making it look like she was supposed to be the key villain and instead we get introduced to Tirek 1.5. Capper was my favorite character. I love is growth and attitude. I'm usually a fan of sidekicks and minions but this little skunk character is so annoying. He's the Jar Jar of this movie. I was confused by the merponies/hippogryphs. They had a magic pearl that allowed them to change their species as well as others. OP much? how has no one ransacked your Rivendell looking kingdom before with a relic that powerful? I saw it as a matinee screening so it was cheaper and the only other people there were 3 families with small children because duh. I went in with 8/10 expectations and ended up with 6. I discussed it with my church's Life Teen choir director's daughter aka the original target demographic of the series and both agree that it wasn't what we were hoping for.
My only issue with the movie really was the lack of Discord. The whole situation they were in could literally been stopped in seconds if they acknowledged that he existed, and in the past it was shown that the princesses power would really mean nothing if his power of disharmony didn't exist. Which also means he could have with a snap of his fingers set everything back to the way it was. Plus the Storm King wouldn't have full power since he didn't steal Discord's magic too. Plus he's my favorite character so that's partly where this came from.
Have you saw the 2009 professor Layton movie if not it's super good if you want to see it its call Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, I would love to see your review for this thanks if you do
Heck, when was the last time there was a major 2D animated movie in theaters that wasn't a limited release anime movie? I'm struggling to think of any in the past few years.
So often, when a cartoon show gets a big screen movie it ends up serving as the series finale and when I went into the theater to see this I watched it with that fact in mind. Thankfully, the show will continue with season 8 next year, but if the movie HAD been the series finale, I would have been perfectly satisfied with that because this would have been a great note to end on.
I think what you said in the beginning about having a fan perspective and a perspective of a new comer is something that can also be applied to Lego Ninjago (or any movie based on a TV show for that matter) . I have been watching Lego ninjago since it started and have watched every single episode and I personally loved the movie and I personally thought it was better then Lego Batman. while my sister who has never really watched the show really didn't really understand the movie and thought it was just OK. Because Like the MLP movie I think Ninjago was definitely geared more towards the fans of the show, but now I can definily see how new comers might have a harder time understanding why they use mechs , why they have elemental powers, why they seem like pros when they are not, and so on. while a fan of the show would know why they use mechs and are considered pros by the people of ninjago when in reality they still have a lot to learn about being a Ninja. so I definitely understand why its a good Idea to try go over both perspectives, and try and see things as a new comer vs someone who know the source material by heart.
I think people who enjoy the show post season 3 will be much harsher on the movie. Theres no point to having six characters ib the main plot and only developing on 2...
I am sure it would be very weird having this full fledged movie called my little pony and not having the mane six. Obviously a lot of episodes still have all the mane six even if not all of them are important.
I mean this is really just a ponx and twilight movie, AJ was just there fpr dry humor, Rarity was a side character, Dash was there for the song and Flutters was a background pony at best, thats my problem with the movie
This movie didn't even get number one at the box office after the weekend. I was expecting it to be number one for a few weeks but nope, it's not even in the top 10 spots even though it's only been out for a month which means *sigh* No 2D animated films coming back.
I feel you could say the same with Ninjago as you did with My Little Pony. I went into Ninjago fully aware of all the characters and their back stories so I personally enjoyed it more but they couldn't decide which season to do.
Lewtoons I agree with that. As a Ninjago fan, I enjoyed the movie a lot, but I 100% agree that it wasn't a great movie. I think their biggest mistake was making it so different from the TV show in tone, the movie was trying too hard to be humorous and sacrificed the story in places to miss both marks, but being familiar with what it was supposed to be made it somewhat entertaining. Also, they wrote a villain song for Garmadon, but it didn't make it into the actual film, just the late credits. I thought it was pretty decent.
I went to see this movie with my younger brother, he was embarrassed of going alone. But when *insert character here* popped up I whispered to my brother "Do you hear that, John? That's the sound of thousands of fanfics being born." : P
I find it weird that a few major movie critics on TH-cam (most notably Chris Stuckmann and Jeremy Jahns) avoided making their own review of this movie.
Hey I was kind of curious, and maybe it has been addressed at some point, but I believe that there was a movie released this year called Spark, and I haven't seen it reviewed in this series yet? It was about a space monkey or something? It doesn't look very good and it went under the radar without a lot of marketing or fanfare, but this IS "every" animated movie of the year!
You missed the Twillicorn debaucle, people were up in arms about princess Twillight, also for the comment about the modern music in MLP, you should check out the song razzle dazzle from MLP, it's a Lady Gaga style song in an episode of MLP
I always appreciate warnings about spoilers and its probably best to see the movie before searching it up on the YT. Not everyone will be quite so generous in regards to avoiding to post spoiler material xD
The animation is so nice. I'm an "animator" (I can't do it for shit but what I do now is time consuming for the least) it's fully shaded and in legitimately questioning the sanity of the animators here Edit: I can already tell this movie knocks equestria girls out of the park mk
You really should catch up with the seasons, if anything get to watching the season 4 finale, it was quite an epic one with a real action scene. (Season 5 is pretty good too)
Do you know the episode called pinkie apple pie you can see when pinkie pie rolls too apple jack you can see next too pinkie tail you can see slender pony or slenderman but you can see him behind the bush
Great review! Will you be reviewing Spark! A space tale at all? It was in theatres in February and it didn’t seem like a great film... I️ wanted to hear your opinion on it.
Could you possibly try to place it properly on the list. I'd say keep it on #4 or 3, I think it's fair to judge it as a seperate movie rather than apart of the show.
I think he should keep it at # 4. He isn't a MLP reviewer and his subscribers aren't all bronies. I don't think a reviewer should judge a movie just because they were a big fan when presenting to a general audience that he makes videos for. Obviously no one can be completely unbiased though.
I went in my Rainbow Dash cosplay when my husband, I and a few friend went to see it. Mind you me and my 2 friends were the only bronies there. My husband and my other friend only came with because he wanted to see it with me for me and my other friend just wanted to tease her nieces that she got to see it first. Btw oh man did the kids that were there loved seeing me in cosplay.
I've already asked but I'm not sure you saw my comment. Could you do *Every Animated Movie Of The Year* videos for past years as well ? Like start at 1990 and movie forward in time ? Having a playlist for every year would be awesome :)
As a fan who has kept up with the series, I'd say you hit the nail on the head. I doubt the movie will win any awards, but it is really enjoyable for fans. Also if you are going to pick up the series again, the last 2 or 3 seasons have easily been the best in my opinion. It's obvious that the writers respect their audience and are aware of how much potential the world of mlp has.
Wait Twilight Sparkle is a princess?
Is she Twilight Princess?
😂😂😂 no but link makes a camio in a n episode
PokePon Collector You just reminded me of my terrible Photoshop I made back when s3 happened regarding that dumb joke. Dang it.
LOL
Haha XD
And that's
THE Princess Twilight Sparkle Princess of Friendship Princess to you!
Have you not watch the show
It's a shame this is the only 2D animated Western film for theaters this year. 3D animation is just dominating other companies such as Disney and Dreamworks. I miss hand-drawn projects. Even though there was a mix of different software in this movie, I appreciate the movie for what it was when it comes to stepping up it's animation.
me too :D
I know I personally prefer hand drawn too
But wasn't Lewtoons disappointed in the Princess & the Frog, which was meant to be the first attempt for a triumph return to 2D animation? Goes to show that how it's animated doesn't automatically make a movie good.
Yeah, a lot of animated films seem to be looking samey at the moment.
However bronies watching it will have minimal effect on the movies performance.
i was theonly one in the cinema when i watched it too. I think all the kids were in school
MCLegoboy Plus, if it had come out in 2015, we wouldn't be wondering why Twilight didn't think to go to Thorax or Ember for help.
Let’s see Zoe Saldana in an animated musical as a main star...
Wait till he finds out about The Book of Life (;
I don't remember her getting to sing in that! I'll have to give it another watch
Lewtoons Sadly I don’t believe gage got her own song, however, she did sing a duet with Manolo at the end
And also hi! I love your videos. Always pursue your passions and have a great day
Megan Green Personally I don't think that shows her voice off very well. (I personally didn't like it that much in general tho smh)
What are you talking about? She is AWESOME in my book! :) I love Zoe Saldana.♥
Why is Gamora
Some of the more subtle character acting type animation nearing the end of the film really stole my heart. Over and over. I heard that some reviewers called the animation "lacking"... I think they saw the wrong film somehow tbh
I don't like the animation because I don't like flash. (I know it's Toon Boom)
fizzycolalizzie
In a way I can agree due to the animation being slow and dragging in many areas, like the scene with Spike and one of the bird pirates playing the drums.
Season 5: A bit too overly reliant on fan service, but it gets the job done.
Season 7: This is tied with Season 4 for my favorite season of MLP.
MLP: The Movie: SEAPONIEEEEEEEEESS!!!!! :D
I gotta agree.
Huh?
You basically share my viewpoint on all the MLP seasons and spin-offs.
What's your take on them?
"...with action scenes not possible on the small screen."
Oh Lew. You really need to stick with watching the show again. You'll be surprised with the action in the show post-season 3.
I was about to comment the same thing lol
Christina Hunt Especially the season 4 finale. Single best moment of the series!
If I'm being honest, the ones in the film are better.
He said series listen before writing a comment
_Sylvain Hunter_
THANK YOU SO FUCKING MUCH FOR SAYING THAT.
I've commented the same thing countless times but no one gives a shit. *Les Schtroumpfs" as written by Peyo were amazing commentary on the problems of our real word society. The bunch of guys that picked up the job afterwards gave us some okay stories but now it's become childish stupidity.
so.. its both #2 and #4... you could have just split the difference and called it #3.
Exactly!
Mr.FluffyFace Ya it's too confusing to place them twice on the list.
*SPOILERS*
great review! i totally agree on the Sia part. the song was forced in and out of place.
Still funny how IGN gave Emoji Movie a higher rating than this fun animated film XD
Just Yoshi WHAAAAAAAT????????
IGN is full of retards who don't know what they're doing. Just look at how they treat Kingdom Hearts.
7/10 too much water? Imagine Games Network reviews movies now?
I also did
The IGN Review sounded like a guy that was mad Discord wasn’t in it
They switched to Toon Boom Harmony for this movie, which I really appreciated.
Wow the animation looks really nice! Much nicer than the actual show!
That's a film budget for you. The cgi is a bit jarring though.
Yeah the big difference is that the normal show uses Flash Animation ~ but this one uses Toon Boom Harmony, I believe
the movie uses regular 2D animation whilst the show used puppet animation (?)
unless the film just uses better puppet animation
Ben Apsley yeah seeing it on the big screen was awesome
Unless the CG animated films make less money of course.
I know almost nothing about the show, but I hope the movie does well so we end up getting more 2D animation in theaters!
A.A. Gray
Its a decent show
Fizzlepop Berrytwist is awesome.
Maera Fey i encourage you to watch the film. Its truly amazing, to me personally.
I'll give it a chance then :)
I encourage watching it just to get your own opinion.
Yeah, I'll be doing that soon.
Good review! Hope you get to see Coco soon because is such a gourges movie in my opinion!
This isn't AT ALL like the movie!"
Also best villein death. XD OH MY GOD he got SHATTERED into little pieces! Probably the most gruesome death in the series! (Outside of MAYBE Sombra.)
I like Tempest, and how she was a fleshed out villain WHO GOT A SONG NO LESS instead of evil cause potatoes.
Well there was a Ninjago TV show (the success of the show spawned the movie) I felt like if you watched the show first the movie would be great
It was a really fun movie.
There are probably going to be scenes cut from the film featuring characters like Flutter shy and the storm king.
I really hope you continue watching the series since season 7 has been amazing! ^^
After you finish watching the MLP series can you do a countdown of your favorite and least favorite MLP episode, characters, songs, moments, villains, and movies?
"movies"? What do you mean? There is only one MLP movie.
Electro Byte the Unicorn Your forgetting the Equestria girls movies.
There is no such thing.
Electro Byte the Unicorn What's your email address. Because I be happy to send you pictures of two Equestria movies that I have.
Exactly my thoughts! This is the first time I’ve seen someone point it out, but I couldn’t agree more.
Finally. Someone else who was disappointed with Fluttershy getting hardcore shafted in the movie like I was!
You'll be satisfied if you keep watching the show. There are some good payoffs for fans who follow it for a while later on
I tried to see it as a non fan, I still think that its pretty much plain in my opinion, I'm rather surprise that there's more positive reviews from the outsider's perspective
being a brony myself, I was "blown away" but the movie itself, but I did have a great time watching it in theaters. the animation was way weird, and hard to get used too, but for a movie, it looked really amazing in many places.
It had a pacing issue but it was so much fun I could ignore my inner critic and just enjoy it with my little sister, and that's what really matters
The mlp movie is great as a Brony I loved it, and some of the stuff in the movie will be in later seasons of the show .

Sean S that's pretty much what I would say
You forgot to mention the breadwinner there.
MLP sucked. It was boring and it was so lackluster
Mlp the movie is way better than the emoji movie any day.
Chris Brasel I wasn't comparing it to The Emoji Movie. I just said that The My Little Pony Movie was boring to me
The new characters are beautiful.
7:48 *i compared him to hades, but its hard to grasp, if the character+motives are so flat*
8:16 and she has a song like SCAR- LION KING
MLP Movie is very awesome movie and G4 is wonderful world in the series. :)
Are you going to review the Pokémon: I choose you movie? It’s only in select theaters for a few days (from the 5th-6th and 11th and 14th), but it was technically in theater.
I, unfortunately, will not be able to see it.
:( But I would love for you to review it.
Glad to have these videos back!! SO HYPE
You started watching again, can't wait to hear what you think of recent developments.
These are my thoughts about the movie, if you want the short version, here it is. (With spoilers)
It had some ups and downs, but it was a solid movie.
Overall, the movie was good, but it could've done better.
>spoiler free review
>recounts the overall plot within the first 3 minutes
I'd be a little, tiny bit, mad if I hadn't seen the movie already.
torrent it already!
as a long time collector of all gens of mlp, this movie made me almost cry at some points, and made me super happy at many others! and i loved the ending, bc i have a guilty pleasure to emotional and catchy pop songs.
How do you compare friendship is magic to the older generations. Obviously I jumped on the bandwagon when FiM came around. I just couldn't get into the older generations.
generation 1 has some good things about it, gen 2, 3 and 3.5 are really bad
Did you watch Generation 1 before you watch friendship is magic?
If I were to pick something I like about the movie, I think it would be seeing new races outside of Equestria. This movie was clearly meant to do the things that can’t be done inside the series itself
this entire video is made 10 times creepier when you slow down all the pony footage
Alex Ring no, not really.
Oh my god I hope you do catch up, love to hear what you think
You do have an animated musical wit Zoe, it's called The Book of Life.
as a big fan of the show I loved the. movie especially the songs except like you the cia one would rather have countess caluratura come back
as someone who's recently been fading out of the series (I only watched 4 episodes of season 7) the movie didn't live up to the hype for me.
KatarinaDreams Watch the rest of Season 7 but keep your expectation low just like I did in Season 5.
It's been around 3 year since I've fallen out of MLP. Maybe I should check this movie out for old times' sake?
Because Like the MLP movie I think Ninjago was definitely geared more towards the fans of the show, but now I can definily see how new comers might have a harder time understanding why they use mechs , why they have elemental powers, why they seem like pros when they are not, and so on. while a fan of the show would know why they use mechs and are considered pros by the people of ninjago when in reality they still have a lot to learn about being a Ninja. so I definitely understand why its a good Idea to try go over both perspectives, and try and see things as a new comer vs someone who know the source material by heart.
you have to watch all 7 season of MLP and i am looking forward to season 8 and yes i am a Brony.
I'm not even that much of a fan of MLP, but I want to watch it now! It looks beautiful and you talking about the actors... I can't help myself
Yes! Your map episode is my favourite video on your channel. I even go back and watch every now and then
This movie didn't even get number one at the box office after the weekend.
Lewtoons have you seen Cartoon Network's Ninjago?
no sir! Heard it was lots better than the movie though
Lewtoons that aside what are your thoughts on Tangled The Series ( also do you hate Disney Sitcoms)?
What about pokemon i choose you?
Hey I was kind of curious, and maybe it has been addressed at some point, but I believe that there was a movie released this year called Spark, and I haven't seen it reviewed in this series yet? It was about a space monkey or something? It doesn't look very good and it went under the radar without a lot of marketing or fanfare, but this IS "every" animated movie of the year!
Are you considering including Loving Vincent in Every Animated Movie of the Year since it's technically an animated film?
You know she's voiced by sia
You missed the Twillicorn debaucle, people were up in arms about princess Twillight, also for the comment about the modern music in MLP, you should check out the song razzle dazzle from MLP, it's a Lady Gaga style song in an episode of MLP
To this day Spectacle and I am Just a Pony are still stuck in my head. That's a fantastic episode.
True, but the point was kind of how the song was so "fake", despite that I still love it lol
but even while being fake, it works in the world as a modern song
I always appreciate warnings about spoilers and its probably best to see the movie before searching it up on the YT. Not everyone will be quite so generous in regards to avoiding to post spoiler material xD
My uncle worked on the musical score as a French horn for the movie lol.
Lewtoons I know I keep asking this but when it comes out please review The Breadwinner! More people need to know about cartoon saloon!
The animation is so nice. I'm an "animator" (I can't do it for shit but what I do now is time consuming for the least) it's fully shaded and in legitimately questioning the sanity of the animators here
Edit: I can already tell this movie knocks equestria girls out of the park mk
You really should catch up with the seasons, if anything get to watching the season 4 finale, it was quite an epic one with a real action scene. (Season 5 is pretty good too)
Do you know the episode called pinkie apple pie you can see when pinkie pie rolls too apple jack you can see next too pinkie tail you can see slender pony or slenderman but you can see him behind the bush
Great review! Will you be reviewing Spark! A space tale at all? It was in theatres in February and it didn’t seem like a great film... I️ wanted to hear your opinion on it.
I remember squealing during the pirate scene and wondering WHY MARIA DIDN'T SING IN THE BOOK OF LIFE IF ZOE'S VOICE IS SO HECCIN AMAZING
I know you tryings to avoid copyrigh but the slowdowned footage distacts me and makes me wish its was faster
yah... It definitely sucks. but It's either slowed down footage or copyright removal :/ ( or just an only audio review, which no one wants )
Ohhhh really the guy with a sonic plushie for a profile pick thinks something is ..... Too Slow? :D
Man the Storm King totally reminded me of James Woods as Hades! And, i never even watched the movie
I’m a mlp fan and I REALLY enjoyed this.
Why haven’t you done leap? It’s been forever and I really want to know what you think
Are you going to do a coco review before 2018?
I've already asked but I'm not sure you saw my comment. Could you do *Every Animated Movie Of The Year* videos for past years as well ? Like start at 1990 and movie forward in time ?
Having a playlist for every year would be awesome :)
I love this art style way, it looks fairly different from the series (unless they changed it, I haven't watched it in like 2-3 years)
Could you make a video( maybe a retooned) about the old Barbie movies?
As a fan who has kept up with the series, I'd say you hit the nail on the head. I doubt the movie will win any awards, but it is really enjoyable for fans. Also if you are going to pick up the series again, the last 2 or 3 seasons have easily been the best in my opinion. It's obvious that the writers respect their audience and are aware of how much potential the world of mlp has.
