That system looks really cool, but I can barely use my smartphone now. I need a flip-phone the size of a briefcase just to be able to see the buttons nowadays! Nice review James! Cheers, Dan

Definitely need another video about cv changes, and how it reads the decoders if u swap out decoders and stuff like that.

I currently have the Esu Ecos command station and 2 of these mobil Wi-Fi units hooked up via the included access point. Works great 👍. The system here limits me to only having the mobil controller. The track interface unit doesn't have a display or extra 2 cabs. The price difference isn't that much. Sometimes, especially when reading/ writing CVs it's nice to have a 7" color touch screen as well.

Hi James, Thank you for this unboxing video of the ESU DCC system. Although I'm quite happy with my current DCC system, I do enjoy seeing what's new in the hobby. I look forward to update videos from you on this system. Cheers, Rich S.

I have been using this system since last January and I really like it. I was one of the fortunate ones to get a system in the first shipment. I understand it is now available again after some production delays. I hope James will do a more detailed review and cover topics such as consisting, automatic setup for Lok- and Loksound equipped locos, being able to use a regular smartphone (with the EngineDriver App) as a throttle, etc.The ESU TH-cam site has a number of good videos on the system as well.

Nice DCC system. In my opinion....the Roco Z21 is a much better overall DCC system. It cost less and you can use any phone or tablet as a throttle. This includes Android, Apple, and even Chromebooks. They also have a hand held throttle if that is what you want. You can get the black...full featured model for around $350-$450. The white model (z21 Start) is half that. The most difficult part about the Z21 is getting them in the US. Other than that....it is easy to setup and operate.

this was a great vid to get going! I got going with a digitrax decoder, all worked well. For some reason, this morning, the train is recognized, light function works but there is no throttle at all. Train doesn't move and there is power to the track. Any thoughts?

James, do you pass everything through the DCS commander? Also, how did your MTH locos run on this system? I’m currently a DCS guy looking to change to DCC

I am really impressed with the reviews of the ESU system but a new entrant into the world of DCC. Probably a dumb question but when you purchase a loco which is "DC/DCC Ready" do you have to purchase specific decoders from ESU to make the loco work on the ESU system or will other decoder say from Digitrax work as well? I notice you are modelling with Kato which is going to me go to locos where possible, but I know I will likely end up with other brands as well, particularly with steam locos. Appreciate any guidance. Thanks

Any brand decoder will work with the ESU system, but as an ESU user myself, I recommend going with them for the decoders as well.

I have one of these fine machines and I love it you can also use the echos app and connect your Android phone and use it as a throttle 😁

    Hey neat control system!

  • @AlohaMilton

I would buy that if it were cheaper, around $350 or so. The price is probably about right though it is a nice android device with a very nice dial throttle that responds to on screen commands as well, really very deluxe with that feature. I use DCC++, and the Ipad 10.5 I use allows 4 throttles at once in yard or road configurations, I paid $10 for WiThrottle on the Apple store. I can also just open up Engine Driver (which is free app) on my android phone and add another few throttles to control 6 or more separate consists all at once, having a throttle and stop button for each one. On my cramped layout yard it helps to have control of multiple trains at once, allows tightly timed switching maneuvers that are fun to perform. I dont have to swipe the screen to switch between engines or consists using the larger screen sizes on an Ipad and a Galaxy Note 5. Not sure the value is all there with any of the DCC systems I have seen for sale, given my setup cost me around $30 for a motor shield for an arduino I already had, $10 for WiThrottle, for power I am using a Meanwell 12v 350w switching industrial power supply from a 3d printer I dont use that much, up and running. For throttles I use my personal tablet and phone as throttle. I still would like one of these ESU touch screen systems they look great, very well designed, for a bit less I might even be tempted to switch from my home made DCC system. But I am not wealthy enough to ignore that in about 45 minutes of Googling it I had a $40 alternative present itself that seems far more functional in some respects. To buy the parts I didn't already own, another $50-70 depending on the power supply quality, one could get a better voltage, like 14v, and a better package in a laptop inline transformer style PSU for convenience, I have to make a box for mine. If you can make a layout benchwork and actually make good looking scale buildings, heck this electronics project is the totally easy part compared to modeling something that looks right.

    • @AlohaMilton
      @AlohaMilton 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's around $375 on some websites, totally getting one of these, seems worth it for that price to have ESU hardware and support instead of my home brewed setup, which I will use for lighting on the layout and maybe some moving scenery elements using the motor shield for its original function to control small motors.

Please, could you inform me if this CabControl Unit:
1 - Read the number recorded in the decoder through CV1?
2 - Change and save decoder number through CV1?
3 - Read, change and save any one CV?
4 - If I'm in a club and one or more friends have a CabControl Unit like that, the wi-fi will interfere with them?

Seems to me if they wanted to do so, they could make it that any cell phone with an APP could operat which would lower the cost possibly? I dont need the knob on the top...what else would I be giving up?

well James you got farther with your controller than I did. mine locked me out and i had to call Herman and get his Luggage code. lol. what he called it. I still had a hard time with mine so went back to my NCE system, and gave my controller to Petercprail. he got it all set up and is working great. loves how easy it is to just swipe the screen side to side to select loco's. only thing he HAD to do is turn the power level up on it.

  • @bobbiemitch

Good overview, but glad to hear that you plan on a more in depth review. When you do, please understand that not everyone, well maybe I'm the only one that doesn't have a smart phone. So when you say that it operates like a typical Android devide, I have no clue of which you speak. Then the Wi-Fi thing. I have Wi-Fi in the house, but my layout is in a dedicated out building. Does send a signal to a Wi-Fi router, then back to the base, or does it have it's own Wi-Fi built in to the base? For some of us, it does matter.
    Keep up the good work.

    • @jlwii2000

Howdy Robert. It creates it's own Wifi network so no home router is needed.

The base unit contains a dedicated Wi-Fi access point. The system does not need to be connected to a home Wi-Fi network or the Internet.

PLEASE HELP!!! i'am going cracy with Cabcontrol...
After turning the unit on in accordance with the instruction manual I tried to connect to the WIFI controll Box, the WIFI signal for the unit appears on the hand controller however when I tell the hand controller to connect it asks for a WIFI password. I have searched and found 123456789, does not work!
According to ESU the unit should connect automatically but I cannot get this, also after a full factory rese the unit and controller :(

Can you review the RailPro system by Ring Engineering? It's similar to the ESU system, only it operates on a completely different system with their own decoders.

@@FKHTrump2024Railpro is awesome for HO scale and bigger. Unfortunately no n scale. They dont use decoders per say, its radio receivers like rc cars. It is so simple to use and the hand held wireless controller is wicked. Im back to n scale thus me watching this video.

May be packed with Tech , but the controller looks an ergonomic fail. Looks really awkward and ugly to hold. The powercab and Rocos multimaus are much better than this .
