19:50 - Puberty hits. This is incredible, some of the TAS tricks in this video show how crazy this game really is. It's impressive that RTA's have came down to 22mins (just under 22, actually) and a TAS can only shave a few minutes off that now, none the less though, this is mighty impressive and you've clearly put a lot of work into making it perfect. Good video! Was really interesting to watch.
I must say that was one of the most interesting OoT TAS I've ever seen. Link had so much power at the end that his voice matured instantly. That's so awesome :D.
I won't feel bad for my kids. When they grow older i will make them think technology hasnt advanced far, and move far out in the middle of jowhere and let them play my childhood games. When they finish they will learn of the new generation and thank me.
In a strange way, I like to imagine this is another canon. Link is the hero of time, and with that he has repeated this journey thousands of times, and over all these repetitions he has figured out these strange, creepy, reality breaking ways of getting to the end. And that's what we're watching here.
The funny thing is, that this TAS is over 2 years old, and in this time people found a lot of new timesavers, like Void Warp, Gohma Clip, better starts for B1 Skip, better starts for cuccos etc. whats saves a lot of time. If Non-TAS would go to this standards for strats they wouldnt even come close to this time.
this was the best TAS i'v ever seen of OoT, i'm glad to see that you made that improvement i told you about by entering the Deku Tree Cutscene where Link will run much farther, i enjoyed every minute of this run, you did a wonderful job, good job SwordlessLink ;)
You literally just raped my mind. ...or did clicking on the video act as consent? Either way, you just broke something in my childhood and now my face hurts.
I think it's absolutely amazing that this game is over 15 years old and people are STILL finding out brand new things about it. The wrong warp glitch is fucking brilliant, whoever found that deserves some kind of serious recognition because that's honestly one of the most useful, yet specific and "why would anyone ever think to try that" glitches ever. Great work SL, I always love your shit.
i LOVE seeing all of the research and testing come together in this video. All the different routes and everything. Its awesome. Nice route and video. gratz!
And here I was thinking this was going to be similar to some of the other videos just slightly faster. I'm happy I'm wrong, love watching these. Keep it up
Wow, Swordless Link! That was amazing! Great run! (I even remember watching ZeldaFreakGlitcha's first run attempts not even that long ago... You've created this TAS rather quick!)
every time i saw one of these done in "only" 2 or 3 hours, it was so exciting to see all the minor shortcuts through dungeons, and seeing how one could do so many things in such silly orders (spirit temple first, etc.) - this one was certainly impressive in terms of speed, but it doesn't leave that same level of wonder or "wow factor," since it all comes down to one amazingly huge shortcut glitch. just less fun to watch :/ congrats though on such an amazing achievement!!!
The day Ocarina of Time TASes rival Super Mario 64 TASes is the day of the apocalypse. It's not there yet, but at this rate, it certainly looks like it'll happen soon. :O
You know a credit scene is too long when it takes literally a third of a TAS run's time, with glitches and all. The coop part is amazing btw, just that alone was worth the 20 mins.
If this still needs explaining, I'll keep it brief. This is a technique called 'wrong warping', triggered by the Ocarina Items glitch (play any item as if it is an Ocarina). If you 'play' an item at an exact point in the blue warp zone, you cancel the warp and the end of the warp cutscene. This is essential because it loads the next zone value which was programmed as the top of Ganon's tower, which is how he seems to just 'end up' there. This can also be used to warp straight to the credits.
This is the way the game was meant to be beaten. Think of how much replay-ability this has given us since it came out in 1998. Millions of hours. What a great game. It's so broken it's beautiful.
From what others said, the game loads cutscenes based on two values, which are a)the triggered cutscene and b) the room you're being sent to. What happens normally is that going into the blue ring+being warped outside the deku tree leads to the deku tree dying cutscene, but since he avoided being warped outside with the bugs he was able to go to a different room, and it just so happens that the deku tree dying cutscene+deku tree main room lead to the escape sequence after Ganondorf is defeated.
Entrances aren't added together, they overwrite the one written earlier. The reason the warp happens is because a cutscene is set to play after stepping into the blue warp. The cutscene number is added to the normal entrance to get a new entrance, which results in Link ending up in Ganon's Tower
Ocarina Items: This is a glitch which lets Link play almost any item as if it were an ocarina. It's done by emptying the contents of a bottle (which contains bugs or a fish), recatching them, and while Link is holding the full bottle in his hand, performing a jump/sidehop/backflip, and while in the air, pressing the button for the bottle followed by the button for the item that you want him to play. In this run, the sword is used for this, although many items work.
Yeah, TAS stands for Tool Assisted Speedrun. The system (program) you use is called an Emulator. And the specific emulator used to record N64 TASes with is called Mupen64.
The game model shows young Link holding the Kokiri sword, but it has the same range and power as the Master Sword. If you look closely, you can see that the white slashes are longer than normal.
He did the Ocarina Items glitch on the edge of the blue warp, so that he could activate the warp but still be able to move around. Then the blue warp tried to load the next area at the same time the door tried to load the other area, so instead it took him to a completely different area which happened to be a room in Ganon's Tower during the destruction sequence.
With how quick the game is getting for possible top speed runs, SL do you ever plan on doing a TAS version that is sub 19 with the current known glitches? I think that'd be awesome.
You open the game with an emulator. Then you start a movie recording. This recording will store all the input presses you make. To maximize the input perfection, you need to slow down the game. This is done with the tool Frame Advance, where you can record the input frame by frame for the entire run. Making the progress take a long time to make. While doing this, you always use Save States to redo things in the run and avoid errors and such you make.
this is over a year old and it uses an old route that is slower and if the route the current WR was used as a TAS it would probably be quite a bit faster than 19:05 which is ridiculous
When you wrong warp like that, it's trying to load in 2 values at the same time; the Kokiri Forest and the room before Gohma. The 2 values are added together and result in the escape sequence in Ganon's Castle.
Each kind of warp has a different value in the game. There's a list with all these values. After trying a few it is possible to calculate which two warps that will take you to which location, without having ot test them all. But as a start: Yes, randomly warps were tested to see where you went.
"- The reason a deathwarp is done instead of a savewarp is so that the last cutscene viewed in the run doesn't change. If a savewarp was done, the last cutscene viewed would be the title screen (which counts as a cutscene), so in order to avoid that and keep it as the Deku Tree opening scene, a deathwarp is done. It has to be the Deku Tree opening scene in order for the wrong warp to take us to Ganon's Castle and not another location."
that door is the door where you came in, but normaly you'll be teleported out of the tree, but that glitch prevented you from teleporting, so you'll be able to go through that door again, but to go to ganon's tower, you need the right frame
He dies on purpose, the wrong warp glitch revolves around being able to open that stone door in the boss room, and it locks until you beat the boss, warp out, and come back around into the room. He defeated Gohma and died at the same time, but the cutscene takes precedence and plays before he dies, so when he comes back to the boss room, the door will be unlocked so the glitch can be performed, and Gohma will still be dead.
@SwordlessLink would it be possible to skip some doors of the tower by jumping down? And if it's possible, would it be necessary to cary zelda all the way? just as a thought
Game was trying to load values from the warp out of the Deku Tree, but was interrupted and the values were not deleted from memory. After you do that, if you try to load a new room, those values and values from the state of the next room get added together. There's a specific frame where if you open the door out of the boss room, you'll get a set of values that will equal out to one of the rooms in the escape sequence in Ganon's Tower. It's called Wrong Warp.
A Tool-Assisted Speedrun is done using tools like slowing down the game sometimes even so far as advancing the game one frame at a time manually, save states, which allow you to load the exact state a game was in before and then record over any mistakes you made and it basically makes a movie where it records every button press at exactly the frame it happened, and then play it back at normal speed to make one continuous, perfect run.
He releases and recatches the bugs so that he has the bottle in his hand. He then sets himself for the wrong warp and then does ocarina items, where he backflips, presses the bottle button while he has the bottle in his hand, and then another button(in this case, the sword.) then, the ocarina items allows link to keep control during the warping out cutscene, and then opening the door at the right moment triggers the wrong warp to the castle. Any more questions just ask.
Wrong warped. The blue warp is trying to warp him out of the deku tree while the door he just went to is trying to load the previous room. The location values conflict.
Where did you get the 9-11 age from? I don't think Link's age was ever given. At best, some early OoT publications said he's seven as a kid. Link also has the Master Sword when he recovers it fighting Ganon.
It means the run was recorded frame by frame with an emulator while using save states and rerecording. The purpose is to find out how fast a game can be beaten when everything in the run is perfected. Visit the website TASvideos for more information.
"Beta quest". When you enter the blue warp that plays a cutscene afterwards, the game pushes in kokiri forest as you last entrance, but also sets another variable that determines which cutscene is played. It turns out that the last entrance and the cutscene number are added together to get the real entrance you're placed. So when the door is opened in Gohma's room at the last second, your last entrance changes, and the wrong entrance is used.
What. The video image is totally an image I have on my computer... I did some gameshark cheating and teleported myself to Ganon and beat him as kid link but this! This is insane! Awesome :D
So is there a video i can watch to teach me how to make one myself?? or just to show me how some1 makes one in order to understand it fully? Also it looks rly glitchy and buggy in the video why is that? and thank you for answering my previous question
speaking of Cosmo... I've to go back to his stream in a long time, think I could get the link forwarded to my PM inbox? thanks in advance and I'll look forward to see how this run goes (vid is loading at the moment)
How does TAS programmes work? Like you tell the programme "jump in that exact spot" or "shoot an arrow in that frame" and the computer does it so it would do it precisely? and where can i download a good TAS?
SwordlessLink I have a question : In my version of Mupen64, the menu 4:12 is very slow. I tested a lot plugins, but nothing changes. How do you fix that ?
*Master Sword gets knocked away* "When the fuck did I get here?!"
I seriously hope to see more memory manipulation TASes in the near future. These really take TASes to a new level of awesome and hilarity.
3:06 Skip intro
Based King Potato Thank you
19:50 - Puberty hits.
I' gotta save Hyrule the only way i know how. Side jumping HYTHIYAHIYAHIYA
WHERES MY F-CKIN HORSE!
I believe I saw an animated cartoon of that actually...
I must say that was one of the most interesting OoT TAS I've ever seen. Link had so much power at the end that his voice matured instantly. That's so awesome :D.
Oh look...
SWORDLESS LINK HAS A SWORD.
AMAZING RIGHT?! The tittle was a lie.
BRAVO!!!! been following you and your TAS since i viewed the MSG run you did from AGDQ. Keep tearing it up.
11:50 How about we call it a draw?
I won't feel bad for my kids. When they grow older i will make them think technology hasnt advanced far, and move far out in the middle of jowhere and let them play my childhood games. When they finish they will learn of the new generation and thank me.
when I was 7 I did a run......... it only took me 2 weeks
In a strange way, I like to imagine this is another canon. Link is the hero of time, and with that he has repeated this journey thousands of times, and over all these repetitions he has figured out these strange, creepy, reality breaking ways of getting to the end. And that's what we're watching here.
That would be a cool fan fiction.
The funny thing is that this can be faster Non-TAS lol
Who's done this faster non-TAS?
CosmoWright. He has the WR of 18:xx I think
Lol found it. I guess that even with tools you can't beat pure skill.
I know. I was just pointing a little thing out. >.>
this was the best TAS i'v ever seen of OoT, i'm glad to see that you made that improvement i told you about by entering the Deku Tree Cutscene where Link will run much farther, i enjoyed every minute of this run, you did a wonderful job, good job SwordlessLink ;)

he doesnt even meet zelda xD
lmao!
i LOVE seeing all of the research and testing come together in this video. All the different routes and everything. Its awesome. Nice route and video. gratz!
At first I thought it was 19 hours xD I'm an idiot
Me to
And here I was thinking this was going to be similar to some of the other videos just slightly faster. I'm happy I'm wrong, love watching these. Keep it up
this is really awesome!! it usually takes me at least 3 weeks to finish ocarina even with glitches. this is amazing
Wow, Swordless Link! That was amazing! Great run!
(I even remember watching ZeldaFreakGlitcha's first run attempts not even that long ago... You've created this TAS rather quick!)
Friend, you are EPIC, I'm a suscriber since the SMB64 TAS, ¡Great Job!

It's not there yet, but at this rate, it certainly looks like it'll happen soon. :O
Ce qui est épique avec les TAS c'est que le gameplay dure moins longtemps que la ciématique, vous étiez pas loin mais chapeau le ganon ;)
Both the run and the area by area information were incredibly entertaining !
You and M.R gruntz are my favorite Zelda runners. Keep uploading Swordlesslink
This is the most hilarious video that has ever been uploaded to youtube. I also love the way the camera fails to catch link.
This is great run. I'm not trying to be mean, but I like how Cosmo did this run (non-tas) in 18:10. This stuff takes so much skill it's ridiculous.
No matter the context, the music of kokiri forest never fails to make me smile
You should have seen my face at 12:33. Priceless. Superb TAS!
GG Swordlesslink, another amazing TAS! Keep up the good work
Awesome. I've spent too much time watching ZFG run this, so it's interesting seeing the TAS strats.
Just unbelievably impressive. Great work SL!
You know a credit scene is too long when it takes literally a third of a TAS run's time, with glitches and all.
The coop part is amazing btw, just that alone was worth the 20 mins.
I love the way SL is making Link backflip from sideway. Never saw this yet very cool!
I have no idea how you did half of that. But Idrc tbh. This is beyond awesome.
This TAS made my day, good work!
Best 19:46 mins of my life!
Also, weren't there plans to do a new TAS also?
This is all making INCREDIBLY good sense to me.
This... is the greatest piece of art ever created.
The purpose of my life was to watch this masterpiece. I can now die happy and astonished.
Awesome, glad I didn't have to wait too long for this. Also: death blow on Ganon = pointing a small sword at his head.
This is incredible. Congrats!
Impressive speed! This may be yet the fastest Tool Assisted Run on youtube!
If this still needs explaining, I'll keep it brief. This is a technique called 'wrong warping', triggered by the Ocarina Items glitch (play any item as if it is an Ocarina). Yeah, but why would the game load the Ganons Castle cutscene this early? I call that a major programming error.
Is this like, a record or something? Because it's amazing you did this.
Is this the new world record? Very nicely done btw! :)
that backflip at the star to go up....the powers of TAS!
this tas was very well done. keep up the good work
He did the Ocarina Items glitch on the edge of the blue warp, so that he could activate the warp but still be able to move around. Then the blue warp tried to load the next area at the same time the door tried to load the other area, so instead it took him to a completely different area which happened to be a room in Ganon's Tower during the destruction sequence.

subbed because this guy is best ever
Awesome vid'.My face all the time during the TAS : 0_o
How did you dicover the glitch at 12:23 ?
That moment when the IRL speedrun is quicker than the TAS
this is over a year old and it uses an old route that is slower and if the route the current WR was used as a TAS it would probably be quite a bit faster than 19:05 which is ridiculous

amazing as always SL.
Hey. Big fan. Do you know if it would have been any faster to just kill Gohma, get the Fairy Ocarina, and use the warp again?

Is the rupee route in this more optimal than the one in your MST run? Or does it just look cooler this? Or both?
that door is the door where you came in, but normaly you'll be teleported out of the tree, but that glitch prevented you from teleporting, so you'll be able to go through that door again, but to go to ganon's tower, you need the right frame
I love swordless Link's style that comes through even in TAS :]
The way Link deflected the Deku scrubs by the door of the first boss was BEAST-mode!
I love how Young Link is constantly being cut from the frame on the adult Link scenes.
@SwordlessLink
would it be possible to skip some doors of the tower by jumping down? And if it's possible, would it be necessary to cary zelda all the way?
just as a thought
Thanks for your explanation now I understand a lot better but even if the player used the emulator it's still incredible! =)
The Deku Scrub code scene was hilarious! Awesome
Non-TAS is faster than this know. I would like to know in how many time it is possible now in TAS, maybe 17 minutes.
Game was trying to load values from the warp out of the Deku Tree, but was interrupted and the values were not deleted from memory. Swordlesslink for president :D
No seriously, great job once again ^^

What. The video image is totally an image I have on my computer... I did some gameshark cheating and teleported myself to Ganon and beat him as kid link but this! This is insane! Awesome :D
Truly, he is the Hero of Time, and the Hero of Saving Time

3:58 You got prescription glasses!!! Jesus that surprised me xD
Agree, but the TAS Skills and knowledge of SL has been improved :D
speaking of Cosmo...
How do you fix that ?
when does timing on this run start? at the first frame in title screen, or first frame you get control of link?
