Abortion isn't on any woman's bucket list | Amanda Bradley | TEDxSouthBank

  • NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a discussion of abortion which represents the speaker's personal views. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Reproduction, pregnancy and abortion are seen as 'women only issues' and Amanda Bradley asks the very important question, 'Why?'. A leader in the non-for-profit and public health sector with her work for Children by Choice, Amanda examines the impact our attitudes towards reproductive health have on equality.
Amanda Bradley has worked in leadership roles in the not-for-profit and public health sectors for over ten years. She is continually motivated to find solutions that create success for all stakeholders and is always up for complex situations and addressing wicked problems.
We live in complicated times. Not-for-profits are being squeezed to deliver more for less. Amanda believes we have to be able to respond with innovative approaches that enable us to do this - it is essential to be able to describe the successes we have in ways that are meaningful. She says we need to collaborate and find methods of meeting the needs of consumers (clients) that is responsive, timely and accessible in a constantly changing environment.
Amanda prefers to spend time making sure all her ducks are in a row before she leaps off the cliff - with the parachute that she’s triple checked.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I belong to that 1% who's IUD failed. I am devastated and grieving the loss of this tiny human that was forming in me by complete accident, AND I am devastated and angry about the huge taboo that surrounds abortion, because it makes me and many other women very lonely and ashamed in our grieve. My contraception failed, there is no way I or my partner could have prevented this, and there was no way we were ready for this child either, or capable. But society tells me I have no right to grieve because I made this choice, society tells me I can't possibly have felt love for this child and still choose to lose it. Abortion isn't on any woman's bucket list, it's a tragedy for every one of us that had to go through it, and we should be allowed to talk about it without shame, or without getting hated for it!!!

I had three abortions and they were the best decisions I ever made. Never once did I feel like I was "killing a baby", or that I had to "grieve a life" or whatever bullcrap. I'm sorry that it was such a traumatic experience for you, but a fetus is just a ball of cells, so to grieve the loss of it is moronic. Sorry not sorry. Your feelings are real, but whatever humanity you ascribed to that ball of cells was not. You can feel sad at a movie, but at the end of the day it is just a movie, and just because you feel sad doesn't mean any part of it was real. Abortion is the exact same thing. The only reason why this is still such a massive debate is because we are still so behind in terms of giving women full autonomy, and it's as simple as that. If you give a woman a kid then she's anchored for life. If I kept any of those pregnancies then I would be anchored for life to a horrible man. Now I am happily married to a great man, and we will have a kid if/when the time is right.

@@TheLauraVEffect I.U.D.'s NEVER prevent pregnancy, only spontaneous abortion. This is a medical FACT, not an opinion. There is a very long wait list here in the U.S., so many who want a child have to be rich & use another country; this prevents lower/lower middle-class adoptions. The foster care system's goals are for parent reunification, not adoption. Yes, some are adoptable, but this isn't part of most mission statements. I had an abortion, like 64%, I was bullied into it. (I was a teen) It was horrible.
I was in med school when I got pregnant with my 36 y/o son. Even fulfilling my dream of being a surgeon wasn't worth killing my own child over.

Never pregnant before this. To abort the fetus, I had to walk past three blocks of protesters yelling out at me "slut, whore, baby-killer". This is what ignorance allows. No woman makes her choice lightly. No couples make their choice lightly. Please respect people’s decisions. I know I’m not alone when I say I wish the world were perfect... but it isn’t. I know it can be difficult to understand, but when someone discloses their unplanned pregnancy to you, remember you aren’t the person whose life is utterly changed. You aren’t the person who has to live with such a heavy decision. But what you CAN do is be their friend and listen to them and support them, no matter what they decide to happen. They need you. They came to you for a reason, because they knew you wouldn’t judge them. I chose to support my friend because I knew she would do the same for me. And I don’t regret it. Please respect people’s decisions. They NEED YOU. Because it’s them against the world. If not you, then who is going to stand by them? Remember you are not alone. Spread the love, not the hate. Marcia Osullivan that’s not the principal of the thing, ur just trying to finding a way to distinguish them , which has nothing to do with my point. I’m saying both an unfertilized egg and a fertilized one aren’t conscious so why if robbing one of the ability to live, is it not robbing the other of the ability to live. Think of it like this, when a fetus begins to develop it is unconscious of its livelihood, and in some people’s opinions aborting this developing fetus is robbing it of its ability to live, and in a different circumstance a fertile woman and man don’t procreate, so wouldn’t not trying to make a developing fetus be robbing that potential life just as much as not birthing the product of reproduction would? Factually yes. The conclusion I want to draw is, personally, I feel everyone sits around with their flimsy personal morals and attacks each other on their opinions; I look at nature for my answers, and natural law says this: that there is no line where life is created nor destroyed and that while humans like to draw lines and labels to distinguish things, nature doesn’t care about you and nature doesn’t care about morals, so the idea of abortion is bleak and unresolved, and I believe precisely that. You cannot choose a step of the reproduction process to say when life is formed, not initiating the process at all is robbing a life just as much as abortion is.

I fought, internally warred, with self worth, depression and weight. In my childhood, my dad was very critical. Everything was about appearance to him. He constantly oogled women and made comments about their physical attributes to me, even when I was a little girl. So, I grew up thinking women were just objects for men's pleasure. I had very little sense of worth. My heart was 💔. I started battling depression in my teens and wanted to die many times. I developed a warped idea of food and eating, which of course led to an eating disorder. I let men use and abuse me. I had two abortions, one at 19, one at 20. I was a dark, broken, angry, bitter, mess, wrapped in a young woman's body and I plastered a smile on my face for public use so no-one knew the destruction inside. At 30, after going through a divorce from a narcissistic addict who cheated all the time, I was then a single mother of an 18 m/o. At that moment I reached my breaking point and realized I needed help. A friend, who truly cared, asked me why I didn't believe in God and Jesus Christ. I didn't have a good answer...it was simply that I felt I could only trust myself and I doubted there was a God when I looked at all the pain in the 🌎. Not long after our conversation, I heard the Gospel, which is the Good News that Jesus Christ came to earth 2000 years ago, fully God and fully man, to be the ultimate sacrifice for our sins, so that we could then be counted as God's children here on earth and then for eternity in Heaven. WHOA!! That blew me away....Jesus loves me (and you) so much that he allowed himself to be mocked, ridiculed, BEATEN, and HUNG BY SPIKES AND ROPE ON A ✝, then he was brought back to life by God the Father after three days, spoke to his many disciples and then ascended to Heaven in his glorified body!! AND, He did that as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. All we need to do is believe he is alive, repent of our sins, and pursue him in prayer and in his WORD, the HOLY Bible. Abortion is a sin because its spilling the blood of the innocent lives God created. God wants to forgive us tho and that's why He sent Jesus. Since the moment I said yes to Jesus, he has given me SO much. He healed my ❤ from all the pain and regrets of my life. No more depression or questions about my value. I'm a new creation through Him, and because I chose Him, I'm worthy of God's goodness. He gave me a new life... a new job, a new husband who loves me for me, not what I look like or what I can do for him, a new home, the $ ability to send my child to private school. He blessed me with a 4th child (2 in Heaven, 2 on earth), the college diploma I had worked for but had not received, work promotions/bonuses, and now I'm blessed to be at home and care for my elderly mother and young child. The Lord gives me peace, love, kindness, joy, patience, comfort, strength, and goodness! The Lord is our great councilor if we'll let him. I've never regretted choosing Jesus. He's waiting for you TODAY! He wants to heal you, love you, and be with you for eternity! If you don't know him, I challenge you to just ask Him... Jesus, are you real, are you alive, did you create me, is the Bible your word, etc.??? If you're sincere in your questions, he'll answer you. I pray you don't doubt when He answers you! May God bless you!!

From the scientific point of view, a human fetus is a human being from 8 weeks up till birth (earlier developmental stage is an embryo). That human organism begins to exist at fertilisation and continuously grows throughout his/her lifespan that goes way beyond birth.
So, if it’s growing, isn’t it alive?

Abortion continues, and has always been an extremely divisive topic in American society. I appreciated the approach this TED talk took in discussing how women do not WANT to be in a position of having to have an abortion, but they unfortunately are in that position due to their abilities to get pregnant. Although many are in disagreement, there are a lot of reasons to provide women the ability to make that decision on their own. A women should have reproductive autonomy and denial is a violation of reproductive as well as bodily autonomy and rights. Many of the community members who are "pro-life" and anti-abortion are only really pro-fetus, and as soon as that life is born, there is not a lot of support for these women who were not wanting this baby but were forced to deliver it. Due to the vast amount of different scenarios, abortion, and the decision to complete an abortion should be kept private among a person of child-bearing potential and their healthcare worker or physician. As a nation, we have politicized the concept and act of abortion, and this has led to women not having autonomy over their own bodies, as well as children who are born into a society that does not want them. We continue to lack the resources, and help that they need to strive and do not put in efforts in place to fund these specific endeavors. Although it is extremely difficult to separate governmental entities from healthcare due to the necessity of safety of both the physician and the patient, abortion and any women’s health should solely rely upon their own decision, and what the physician thinks is best for them. All women deserve the right to make their own decisions, including the decision of terminating a pregnancy. What can we do as a society to separate women's bodily autonomy from governmental agendas?

I get your concern about women getting unsafe, illegal abortions if abortion were outlawed. I don’t want any women to get hurt, either from legal or illegal abortions. But I have a problem with a statement that says we need to keep it legal to kill smaller people so that it’s safer for bigger people to kill smaller people.
Also I agree some women will still choose abortion even if it’s made illegal. But I also find it hard to believe that all or most women will choose to break the law. Law is not just there to punish people. It is also a teacher of what is right and wrong.
If the law were to do just one thing, it would be to stop us from killing one another, don’t you think?

I believe the best thing we can do to combat unwanted pregnancies is to educate everyone about "you know what" and the consequences it can give.
Unfortunately, there are cases where the forced version of "you know what" happens, the baby won't have a very good life, or in some cases if the parent to-be is guaranteed to die if the baby is born, in those cases abortion should be allowed. However, if two people consent and do the act of you know what, and they know the risks, it is probably best if they don't get an abortion. Remember, no form of protection is able to 100% prevent a pregnancy, and it seems like the main reason for "you know what" existing in the first place is to procreate, well no wonder doing so can very well give a baby.

Ok looks like we have ourselves a interesting "Mandela Effect" topic here. I apologize for going off topic here but this is a interesting situation we have here. In 2007 a Movie called Bucket List was released that had two older gentleman fulfilling items on a to do list that they called the Bucket List. We were told later on that the term Bucket List didnt exist before 2007 the date of the film and it was made up by the writer, this has caused a Mandela Effect to be tagged. A large group of people have claimed that the term did exist before the Movie and how they remember hearing this term on many occasions over the past 20 years are so in their life. But now that after much research the term cannot be found before the release date of the Movie Bucket List in 2007, until now. This video has the term in the title and was posted in 2006 placing it 1 year before the movie, during many searches in Google for this video not to have came up is almost impossible seeing that it is a Ted Talk episode. Most of us know that there are many situations and reasons why women get abortions. I notice she did not even touch on the science or procedure of an abortion at all. If you are going to support and encourage abortion as an option, you need to be comfortable and open with explaining and showing what exactly it is and how it works. Just because someone may think they have a valid reason for committing a certain action does not mean that the action itself is moral/right.

    • @ericday4505

Hello BriGuy89, Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I am hope you found the speaker as impactful as I did. It is important to recognize that there are many reasons a woman gets an abortion including medical, financial, and personal reasons. While some people like you may disagree about the decision to have an abortion, it is essential to respect each individual’s right to make choices about their own body and healthcare decisions. Bodily autonomy is the right to make individual decisions about their own body and have control over what happens to it. This principle is rooted in the principle of bodily autonomy, that everyone has the right to make decisions about their body without interference from others. The beautiful thing about being a human is that we all have unique moral principles that are guiding us. Multiple factors like our age, education level, or religious beliefs can affect our guiding principles. Just because you wouldn’t get an abortion because it goes against your moral code doesn’t mean other people should not be afforded that right. As highlighted in this ted talk, getting an abortion is a personal decision that should be made between a woman and her health care provider. Regarding the research on the safety and technique of an abortion- it is a medical procedure that is safe and effective when performed by a trained healthcare provider. The specific details of the procedure may vary depending on the stage of pregnancy and individual circumstances, but it is a common misconception that abortions are dangerous or harmful to women's health. In fact, research has shown that complications from abortion are rare and the procedure is safer than childbirth. Many researchers have shown that the risks associated with childbirth are much higher than an abortion, the risk of death associated with childbirth is 14 times greater than with an abortion (Raymond EG, Grimes DA. The comparative safety of legal induced abortion and childbirth in the United States. Obstet Gynecol. 2012;119(2 Pt 1):215-219. , Gerdts C, Dobkin L, Foster DG, Schwarz EB. Side effects, physical health consequences, and mortality associated with abortion and birth after an unwanted pregnancy. Womens Health Issues. 2016;26(1):55-59., Bartlett LA, Berg CJ, Shulman HB, et al. Risk factors for legal induced abortion-related mortality in the United States. Obstet Gynecol. 2004;103(4):729-737.). As you can see from the articles listed, many researchers have validated this fact through different research studies.

Am I the only person who thinks abortion should only be given if the person never consented to you know what or if the baby is guaranteed to have a bad life?
All good FLE classes teach this, no matter what protection you use, there is always a risk from you know what. Isn't the main purpose of "you know what" is to get a child? If you willingly do this act and think there is no chance of the merging of genetic material happening, then I am really confused as to what brought you to this conclusion.
I believe much of the reason is due to lack of education on the subject, teachers just dance around the issue and don't explain the possible consequences or long-term effects... the future adults of this planet need to know before making a possibly life-ruining mistake. This goes for diseases from "you know what" too, people willing do this act and then are surprised to know they have a disease. Education is key, most people just don't know what they're getting into.
I get why people want everyone woman the option to abort any baby, but I think if we educate people on you know what then there a lot will be less need for it. Unfortunately, some situations do come up where it was forced or if it was willing, but some harmful genetic mutations come up... for those cases abortion should be completely legal.

You're pro-life because you were almost aborted? Think about the pain and struggles that your mom had to go through when she was pregnant. While pregnancy can be a beautiful thing, it's not easy. If my mom wanted to abort me - she should've had every right to do so. I would never force my mother to bring a child into this world unless she wanted to. I would never wish childbirth on someone who doesn't want it. Every woman should have a right to her body, and every decision that she makes with her body should be by her choice. I would be absolutely miserable if I were forced by law to have kids. Nobody should have to live a miserable life because they were forced to have a child that they didn't want. If you think about it this way, having kids requires so much responsibility and willpower. If your mother has given you a good life, why not be grateful? She decided that she wanted to bring you in this world, that's what matters. Deciding to have a child when unplanned requires a lot of thought, and ultimately she decided to have you. I can understand being upset with her if she is not a good parent to you - but being upset with her because she wasn't sure she wanted to bring you into this world is a bit unreasonable because in the end, she decided that she wanted you.

Mia Lynn I said I felt neglected but I meant in that moment but she is not like that she is hard working and I admire her cause she’s been through so much pain even since her childhood and I want to do my best to get a great job so I can pay her back for everything and that’s my only dream it’s to give her everything she wants not just because she gave birth to me but also because she was still there for me even when no one was ever there for her. I’m pro life cause everyone deserves to have a chance to live so they can see the goodness of Jesus who died for us even though we could never pay back what he did for us. 😊

And yet, if it's just an abortion for convenience' sake, then why don't you have it and give it up for adoption if you don't want one or can't take care of one?

Victoria Odegaard Do you realize how many children are in orphanages? It’s overcrowded. And to go through the pain of labor for a child she didn’t even want? If the man wants a child, let her have time. Or go get someone else pregnant.

What if you have a baby developing in you, but in a few months find out when you give birth the baby will be dead. It will be born without a heart, lungs, or skull. Well you can say give birth to it normally it will be dead anyways, but what if carrying it to term caused more grief. The longer you carry the more connected to that baby you are.

I just had a niece, she is being raised in a healthy household and my sister loves her very much. I just want to point out not every single abortion is necessary if you love your niece, your daughter, your son and so one, some families actually give their baby a wonderful life to live. I say this because everybody shouldn’t just give up their baby for abortion because they think they’ll grow up suffering, it’s not always like that. I went through adoption too, it wasn’t that bad, it was hopeful and glad I got adopted, setting your child for adoption isn’t hard either or cause suffering, it worked greatly for me getting adopted and I found peace in life, so don’t think setting your child for adoption is going to make your child suffer, like stop making all these negative excuses.

0:56 interesting how the word abortion is spoken so much quicker than its immediate predecessor, unplanned pregnancy. This subtle use of language indicates a discomfort in saying the word "abortion", which it should, because it's taking the life of a human being and that is very shameful.

She spends most of the video talking about all the reasons why someone may become pregnant when they didn't want to. But she doesn't give one reason why it is justified to dismember, poison or starve another human being to death. I didn't want to get pregnant, and yeah, it was really difficult for a ton of reasons. I was still in school, neither one of us had a job, there was abuse from multiple people, we had only met a few months ago, (and yes, to whomever mentioned medication, I was on 4 different medications for depression, which I had to cut back to one for awhile, although that is FAR from a common reason people give for having abortions), But you know what else is hard, having a 5 year old. And yet there has never been a point in time when I would have had the right to end my son's life, nor would there ever be a circumstance in which that would be justifiable.

@laurena there are plenty of born children who don't have good lives, or may not in the future. But killing them to prevent their potential future suffering is not an acceptable solution. Neither is killing younger children who may be in unfortunate situations the answer.

@Wesley Heartland "terminating the pregnancy" is just a euphemism for ripping the limbs off of, disemboweling, decapitating, starving, or inducing a heart attack by injecting digoxin into the heart or brain of another human being's body.

    • @katieobrien9760

@Wesley Heartland the majority of abortions are suction D&C's, in which the preborn human is torn to shreds through a catheter.
