As much as I adore Tarkovi’s playing, i don’t understand why he decides to take such liberties with the score. So many held notes skipped where he could really make some music. It’s almost like he was trying to get through it as fast as possible. Great playin and beautiful tone, but should take more time.
Very much agree! Gabor even sounds as if he is sight reading the piece. And who knows, perhaps someone recorded him playing it for the first time or in an early practice session. Otherwise, the rushing and sloppiness of his performance is just baffling to me for such a phenomenal trumpet player.
I just noticed the actual video of Gabor playing this live in concert, so my comment about sight reading or practice session was certainly incorrect. The fact that he's playing on a rotary trumpet might account for the awkwardness in performing some of the faster passages. Still, that's all the more reason to not rush through them on that instrument. 🤪
