I am a 63+ racer and this video is a gem. It is refreshing that such an elite competitor shares his experiences frankly and openly. Thank you Ben and Pat for sharing this format. I am also going to comment on the Ben/Pat hour record video as I am really keen to attempt this feat also.

This is the kind of elite athlete I will show to my teenage son. Pat is so humble but still has to be confident and aggressive in a race to be an elite competitor. Sharing his fluids in a race shows his level of sportsmanship.

Thanks for your conversation with your friend Pat, Ben, and very cool of Giant to let him ride a Trek and talk about it, too. And by the way, if he is good with one big gravel race win, that sounds good for the rest of us in his age category. Probably best that he focus on his road and track success. 😀

At 24:00 ...Age group gravel racing makes so much more sense for the average racer.. rather than riding in a huge bunch and not even feel like you are racing , much less know WHO you are racing, or being able to mark the fast ones in your class. This should be something we all push for at these huge events. They certainly could give simple awards to the top three to five of each age group , either 5 or 10 year age groups. Everyone who pays top dollar to enter should be able to feel like they are really racing.. right now, at many races its only a small fraction of elite or pro riders having a true racing experience, and some of them aren't even themselves paying for their entries like the average rider always does.
The Gunnison Grinder is going that direction in 2025. I raced it this year. The promoters and I discussed this and they told me they have decided to do age groups awards next year. Good for them! I hope to see a lot of Coloradoans support this race and others of such format next year whether it's the 30 mile, 60 mile, or 120 mile race they enter next September.
