  • Are the 49ers loaded with offensive superstars? Obviously. Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, AND Brock Purdy are all superstars. Yes, I said Brock Purdy is a superstar. I looked through 41 statistical quarterback metrics through Week 17. I knew he was having a good season, but after looking through the stats, I didn’t realize HOW GOOD his season was. Let’s check the tape.

For those who aren't fans of the 49ers I can understand the hesitancy in showing praise to Purdy, he kinda came out of nowhere and people still haven't adjusted to the new reality. But take it from someone who has been a fan of the team since Montana played, I haven't seen better QB play on this team since Steve Young, and am amazed each week at the dimes Purdy drops all over the field, plus he throws with elite level anticipation. The ball is out quick, often before the receiver even makes his break and the ball is delivered on the numbers. This makes his very talented supporting cast reach their maximum potential which is what ya'll see, but Purdy is responsible for delivering them the ball in stride and on time. Shanahan was right, he is the real deal.
    Fantastic breakdown Mr. Palmer.

How ironic that these Brock Purdy defenders and supporters (of which I am one) push a similar false narrative about JimmyG that they accuse others of pushing about Brock. "Jimmy G he could never throw deep." "Constantly missed the big throws." Jimmy made a LOT of big throws that he attempted. He just didn't attempt many. [Brock is indeed more courageous and throws deep far more often. I'm not saying Jimmy is better than Brock - just that there is a lot of BS being spread about Jimmy just like a lot of BS being spread about Brock.] There are historic deep throws by Jimmy. I recall a deep 50+ yarder by air bomb to Deebo in a Bears game - tackled just a yard or two from the EZ, the 56+ yarder by air to Emmanuel Sanders for a 75 yard TD in the classic 2019 Wk14 Saints game, the 50+ yarder by air to Sanders when Jimmy converted the 2nd of two consecutive 3rd and 16 plays against the Rams. I think it was 2021 that David Lombardi reported that Jimmy LED the league in deep throw (20+ yards) Cmpl%. Sacks? Jimmy had the fewest sacks, the fewest fumbles and the fewest yards lost of all QB's during his 10 game run last year. Yes, Jimmy had longer drives - that was his mode of success: slowly and steadily moving the ball reliably downfield since he was a 3rd down conversion monster - that controlled the clock. Yes, Brock is more capable of scoring quickly - a much more confident and fearless downfield passer. Yes, I'd take Brock over Jimmy. But trashing Jimmy is just dumb. He had amazing and elite stats last year before his injury and his stats during the first half of the 10 game winning streak essentially matched Brock's stats. I know the game well enough that I can admit that even though I'd take Brock over Jimmy, there are still some things Jimmy was better at, like throwing arm mechanics - the way Brock reaches way back, pointing the ball in the complete opposite direction - adding to complexity to align the ball before release, and adding BIG susceptibility to arm injury and fumbling - compared to Jimmy's exquisite motion that was simply lightening fast up and forward, with no reach-back and minimal susceptibility to arm injury or fumbling. (Yes, ironic that Jimmy still had throwing arm injuries with thumb and shoulder - but overall less susceptible, and a MUCH quicker release.) Jimmy wouldn't have had the injury that lost us the NFCC game last year. He would've seen the Tyler Kroft-Hassan Reddick mismatch earlier and the ball would've been GONE by the time Reddick got to the QB, with no chance of arm injury due to reach-back motion during the throw. No one QB has everything. Even the best can have weaknesses and even the worst can be great at some aspect. Stay open minded. GO NINERS!!

@@rhmayer1 He couldn't throw deep - was inaccurate. Before Purdy we used to have ghosts routes, now if someone is open (doesn't matter where on the field, Purdy will find him)and it's not considered just a pure ghost route anymore.
Cool he throw 50+ yards, so can literally any QB in the NFL. Can they throw it with accuracy though? That's all that matters and Jimmy couldn't - especially on outside the number throws. When your only proof is one throw in 5+ seasons that says enough about how bad he was at throwing anything past 20 yards.

      @rhmayer1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@claudegilea "...only proof is one throw in 5+ seasons..." Huh?? I just gave you 3 examples off the top of my head of 50+ yard passes (not 50+ yard gains but actual pass distance), actually all from one season. And there are plenty more 40+. I rarely see ANY other QB throw 50+ yard passes. (Not 50+ yard gains, but 50+ yard by-air throws.) Sure, he's thrown some inaccurate deep balls. So has virtually EVERY QB. You obviously didn't read my comment that noted that Jimmy had the highest Cmpl% for deep passes in 2021. It really sounds like you're not really familiar with Jimmy's games, but just spouting off the usual hate-narrative without actual factual basis backing it. I don't doubt that you've witnessed some bad deep throws by Jimmy. But you must've missed all his good deep throws.

@@scottsherman5262welcome to the future of QB play! Your opinion is way off, but you're entitled to be foolish.
There's way too much complexity in the modern NFL defense with shades of Fangio's split field design + Saban's menu of C3 and pattern match/carry+deliver rules as well as Flores' C0, with middle field closed and all the ways to disguise there (read: the second play Palmer dissects: a loaded front that backs out to Tampa 2).
Any decent DC is coaching some hybrid version of what I described above.
If you can't read a defense you're gonna fail as a QB. That's why 2023 saw historcally bad QB play.
It doesn't matter who your star players are...a Lamborghini needs a driver. Heck...if you look at the 4 highest rated QB seasons on efficiency:
      1. Manning in 2014 (M Harrison, E James, D Clark, and R Wayne)
      2. Marino in 84 (Duper and Clayton)
      3. Warner in 2001 (Bruce, Holt, and Faulk)
      4. Brock Purdy
      - they all had a lot of talent. The QB makes it all work.

Brock scored somewhere in the mid-90th percentile on the overall test. This test did show that Brock can identify objects at speeds which existing literature suggests shouldn't be possible for humans, but that's only because that literature doesn't focus on the hyper-outliers like Brock & Joe Burrow, who also scored exceptionally high on this S2 test. Thank you for a fantastic video with some excellent content. This video was well thought out, it's content was analyzed and then double checked for authenticity, and accuracy, you broke the plays down so as even a layman could understand what you were illustrating. So I guess the only thing I have issue with as far as you are concerned Mr Palmer is the fact that you went to freaking USC!!! I'm a huge Notre Dame fan. If it wasn't for your choice of School to play football for, I might have subscribed to your channel but I made a promise to myself a long time ago that there is no way and I mean absolutely none that a USC player or just plain alumni would receive any love from this Notre Dame fan lol. Just kidding, but not really. Seriously though, really really good video!!! Being able to show people who continue to doubt Brock Purdy's amazing abilities, with your video and prove to them with direct visual aids will make it nearly impossible for the haters to have any type of argument against Brocks Greatness. Thank you!!!

    I agree... Superstar.
I've been following everything he is doing on the field, and there are nearly no other QBs in this league, so called 'elites' included (Mahomes may be the only exception), who throws with the anticipation, poise, accuracy, and possess all of these other subtle intangibles that are highly important in being that well rounded, all encompassing, superstar QB that every REAL analyst is seeing in him. The kid is able to do it all in an extremely quick and precise manner, from deciphering his opposition, to going through his progressions, to knowing when to bail and what he can get out of it, to extending plays. This kid is under the microscope of many other veteran QBs and even they find it hard to locate faults in his skills. Yes, he has had bad games. He is human...but I am completely in awe of how this kid plays almost every week. Haters are white noise.

Those games when Lance got hurt, then Jimmy got hurt… All hope was lost. My heart dropped in my chest, I felt it, we all did. Some guy comes out and starts playing how I was expecting our starters to play? Brock moved and threw better than I have seen in since Montana and Young for the 9ers. How do you not see what I saw? If you love and have roots in this game, without team preference, just the game! This is history.

But when you see the break downs of what brock does on film. When i see him scramble i say to myself oh they werent open ok what you gona do lol. They he hits aiyuk for a TD. Its wild. Lets go 49ers. 34-17 niners! 1/20/2024

And yet they all still want to compare him to guys that have been in the league as starters 2 + years longer than he has. They forget this is his FIRST FULL SEASON. Comparing apples and oranges. They dont ask themselves "if this kid is getting all of these stats that are 'nfl history' etc. then what were the stats of these 'big time qb's' their first full season?" If you wanna compare compare it that way. They wont because it doesnt fit the narrative . Love my niners but even if i were a fan of another team, this kid would still impress me and i would watch him. I would still be faithful to my team but would love to see where he goes in his caareer. Just rhe beginning ❤

As it relates to the first play you show, how does BP outwit savvy DB’s like we saw with Bengals and Ravens? They will act like they’re planting and committing to Deebo to bait Brock into that throw to Aiyuk. Instead of going full steam downhill to Deebo, they’ll do a good enough acting job to convince Brock they’ve committed to Deebo, then they’ll stop and stay home. Too late, Brock has already released the ball, interception.
What’s the right approach when facing savvy DB’s? Do you hit Deebo for the solid 6-7 yard completion to setup a bigger play later in the game?
The opening drive vs Ravens, BP was clicking, moving the ball. Hit Kittle on a on a big play 3rd down conversion, moved ball inside Ravens 30. Hit Kittle again for another first down, moved ball inside Ravens 15. First and 10. Kyle Hamilton baited him into thinking Deebo would be wide open. Instead Hamilton opened his hips and picked the ball in the end zone. No points.
The deflected passes that turned into picks were just a bad day at the office. In a rematch, I like 49ers chances vs Ravens. Refs gave Ravens some PI calls early in the game that kept drives alive. The 49ers defense seemed to concerned with being chummy with Lamar Jackson. In the playoffs, defenders don’t have to be as gentle when they go to tackle running QB’s. It’s hard for me to have a ton of respect for running QB’s in today’s game. Especially after I see a slow-mo IG video of Bryce Young nonchalantly smirking as he spins past a defender into the end zone. He wasn’t bracing for contact, he was trying to avoid contact, he knew no contact was coming.

Seriously. Never understood why system QB was ever a derogatory term. That's like calling someone a blocking TE. Basically just means you rely on 1. Reading a defense both pre and post snap. 2. Marrying your feet with every single route in the progression (arguably the hardest part about QB'ing 3. being comfortable enough in the pocket to navigate it and not bail out by backing up further like it's madden or moving too soon to your left or right. 4. Keeping everything on time and in rhythm. 5. Finding the open man. 6. Throwing with touch and accuracy so your receiver at minimum can protect themselves and at best can make a play.

I pasted this comment on a different thread. Agree Brock is supermagical superstar, an undercover QB makes a great spy whom everyone overlooks.
Brock Purdy, last year nfc championship with eagles got injured, of all the remaining quarterbacks, he’s the only one who hit rock bottom, he’s a survivor of a disastrous game, he came back with with a vengeance breaking records, some said he’s the worst of all the remaining quarterbacks, but scientifically, a species that survived with adverse conditions actually become a stronger species,a hard to kill; a lot underestimates Purdy but scientifically he’s the most dangerous of the remaining quarterbacks, virulent and resistant ,though comparatively smaller, and looking innocent he has intangible qualities that talent scouts or critics don’t see .😊

That stuff is for fair weathered fans who couldn’t name 4 guys that were on their own team. Brock has the 2 things that elite superstar qbs have. And that’s elite level processing and photographic memory. He remembers every coverage he ever sees and diagnoses it with if half a second. Finally, someone says those words out loud. Tom Brady was the greatest game manager of all time. I've said literally that same statement for the past several years. People are aghast, sometimes even offended by it, but it's true. And it's not a put down, just a simple statement of fact. But here's the scary part. Go back and look at Tom Brady's early career. At no point in his first six seasons in the NFL did he even remotely approach the level of play we've seen consistently from Purdy in his rookie and sophomore seasons. What Brock Purdy is doing is simply NOT normal! From a historical point of view, what Purdy did as a rookie and continues to do in year two is downright freakish and unprecedented.
The numbers speak volumes. Per PFF his raw efficiency on deep balls is historically unprecedented, his adjusted net yards per attempt (ANYA, considered by many to be the ultimate metric of QB play) is top five all time. But beyond the numbers even, if you want to be jaw-dropped (assuming you really know and understand the game), just watch some film on the guy. Show me a quarterback who gets through his progressions quicker and more precisely, more consistently than what he shows on a weekly basis. I'll wait. I watched Montana and Young in the 80s and 90s. Neither was this good this early in their development. Not even close. That's the point that's being missed here. This dude is doing things that all-time greats like Brady and Montana only figured out years into their careers. How about instead of denigrating it we just enjoy the greatness of it? Because, it bears repeating, this shit is NOT normal. It's great. But great on a freakish level.
