Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, can be taken too far. After, multiple times of crossing your intellectual/emotional boundaries, the situation must be addressed. So, the negative behaviour can be addressed. Trust issues will grow, if both parties do not work together, to deal with negative behaviour. This applies to family, friends, co-workers and intimate partners. Ignoring unwanted negative behaviour can create resentment and further erode trust issues. Equity can be helpful. But, unbalanced dynamics already in place can be challenging to the point you just want to create distance, that is appropriate and healthy. Each situation is unique.

It depends on the person and how big their Ego driven pride is. This will not work on my parents or my sister. However it might on my brother. I consider both losses and gains due to a behavior. So out of 5 people, that's 3 fails, 1 maybe and 1 success. Not to say that this is not a good method. We have to try every method to see what works with each individual.
I heard you say how to ask yourself that but I didn't hear how you would ask to get the other person to stop their unwanted behavior. Maybe it's because I thought you meant a behaviour towards me that I don't want from them rather than a behaviour destructive to themselves if there is any difference.

well i think the point is that asking directly and saying out loud “i am losing out on xyz” is better than just like knowing it in the back of ur mind
