Tutorial: Using OpenSCAD To Make Your Wife Happy

  • My wife has a white board that wouldn't stay on the wall. It fell one last time before she was fed up and asked me to 3D print a solution. I used OpenSCAD to design a set of brackets that would hang the white board from a few picture hangers.

    It a little late, I know but nobody mentioned the BIG elephant in the room. We still don't have a cold fusion machine. KEEP your eye on the ball guys. ;-)

    Those velcro 3m hangars work awesome. No nails in the wall, used it for the dog's Harness holder. Great for rental properties. Might cost more doing it the 3D way.

    What tolerance did you pick for the white board dimension vs the clip? And was it printed in PLA or ABS? I'm just trying to figure out common interference tolerances. I've broken a few of my recent designs pushing them together to clip.

    My comment for the thorn video was about the yellow jack stands but I think this video is really cool! I love how 3d printers can be used for creative stuff like the Nerd HQ logos and coolie cutters but they can also be used for practical and useful things like this! What other kind of practical projects like this have you used your 3d printer for?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Evan Gray practical projects? hmm... I printed a pen holder for my wife as well. She liked that. I tried to print a replacement plastic axle for my son's toy car, but, it just didn't work out.

    Great video. Is there a stl file for those hangers?

    Do you still use OpenSCAD and would you recommend it? I was considering it along with FreeCAD and Blender. (Proprietary options are not on the table)

    Totaly understand, i mean cold fusion is 'cool' right ;), But if the wive need a whiteboard holder thingy you finaly have a 'serious' project.
    Does remind me, when i was building this portal to an alternate universe and the wive needed a replacement part for the dishwasher.

      +Mohammed Zaman For this one I used my Flashforge Creator Pro

      no wonder your prints came out so nice. I highly doubt if it is possible to do it on a Prusa RepRap with such precision.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mohammed Zaman I think you could get the precision out of a reprap, however, your print speed would have to be pretty low.

    • @mohammedzaman1937

      ok. I will try that. thanks for the suggestion. hope you have a nice thanksgiving.

    Link to beer cup? Search channel for Beer glass or cutting glass and no results? Perhaps I'm being dumb.

    Uses a $300,- precision digital caliper. "It's roughly 189mm from top to bottom".

    You should put the screw holes (insert sexual innuendo) behind the whiteboard and it would look even better.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrTigerpirro ha! I thought about that, but my wife want it this way. I couldn't argue with that.

    Great only took a day or 2 to make it. You could have use 2 L brackets with 2 wood screw and fixed it in 5 minutes. Sometime 3d printers are good but this is not the time.

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Hulla Dek That's true, I could have. But, I used this as a learning opportunity. Plus, I would have had to go to the store to get L brackets and wood screws, and using my method I could keep drinking my beer AND solve the problem. :)

    could you print a duct tape role dispenser because that's easy right plz tell me if its easy and also i loved the vid and the editing

      rwl 04 Duct tape dispenser? It should be possible. Duct tape is super sticky, the strain might be too much. I'll see if I can design something.

    What printer are you using?

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Wobacz Hello! I've got a Flashforge Creator Pro. It's a dual extruder printer. I run ABS on the right extruder and PLA on the left one. I have another 3D printer on order and will DEFINITELY be doing a great series of videos on it! Thanks for asking by the way!

    • @piotrlobacz

      Thanks for reply. I haven't got printer yet but I really want one and want it to be good and affordable so I'm doing some survey before purchase. Thanks.

    1st off, this video is racist, the proper term is caucasianboard. why don't you own a blackboard? #allboardsmatter.
    2nd: Why do people use Openscad? just curious. Seems like there is much easier to use programs out there. Nice video!

    • @3DPrintingNerd
      @3DPrintingNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +koolbeenzbro Holy crap, I nearly spit out my coffee at your first comment! Thanks for the nice words, and as for OpenSCAD, I think the appeal is for those that like computer coding. It feels like you're writing software when designing your 3D object. With all the tools out there now, though, I wouldn't probably go to OpenSCAD for this issue now.

    • @KennethGundersen
      @KennethGundersen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What software would you use then that is free just like the OpenSCAD is?

    • @koolbeenzbro
      @koolbeenzbro 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't know any that are just like OpenSCAD. But there is many " GUI" free cad programs out there. FreeCad, TinkerCAD, 123D. I use Solidworks but that is not free.
