It’s not mental Alex, it’s realizing what you are leaving behind for your loved ones to deal with, that’s called clarity and comes from a place of love. Just so you know, after watching both hoarder houses I began clearing things out and donating to charities, so thank you for helping me 🙋‍♀️😊🙏

Me too, at 47 after having grown up with very little I hate throwing out anything useful and found I was saving things for others and after having lost 2 of my husband and I parents and having to deal with a house full of 50 years of marriage and memories that are now stories no one shared plans never completed… and made me start to think what we are leaving behind for our kids to deal with

I found this channel at a time in my life where I felt owning so much stuff was such a burden. I was searching for minimalist living when - " I bought a hoarder house" popped up. Through your channel, I found I was content with less. Seeing the burden on families hoarding causes, I felt my decision to downsize was the right direction for me.

I’m right there with you. I got rid of approximately 75% of my belongings and although it was difficult, I don’t regret it at all. I enjoy visiting cluttered spaces, full of special “treasures”. I’m also happy to no longer be living in clutter.

Alex, my hubby and I toyed with the idea of leaving the UK to live in Spain for a couple of years. we put our house and business for sale, expecting to wait for months/years for offers…the business sold in 1 week, the house in 3 weeks. Fate stepped in and we moved our young kids to Spain 16 years ago - and don’t regret it for a second!! Things happen for a reason - go with it, don’t doubt your decisions. It takes a lot of courage to turn your life upside down, but boy! it’s great fun! Good luck with everything.

He collects some things, but sells them just as easily if it means it has to provided for his family in some way (and that is how it sould be.) Enjoy the things for a while and let it move on. He can not keep everything anyway. The shop wasn't feeding him and or his family mentaly, so it had to go. I understand that. After loosing both my parents within 2 years of eachother I understand where he is coming from. The amount of stuff people leave behind and the family has to sift through in sometimes very short amounts of times, while they are greving is overwhelming. Alex knows life can be short and sudden and he doesn't want to leave his family that kind of legacy. Your situation makes perfect sense to me, a chapter closes, and the book (story) continues.
My school years were a chapter in their own right, the real chapter one was when I went out on my own. There's a TH-cam channel called "Matt's off-road recovery". Matt owned a roofing company and was a roofer, he sold his interest in the roofing company; and bought a defunct towing company. His off-road recovery was an addition to that chapter. (I seem to remember you had at least one serious chapter before Curiosity Inc.)
My first adult chapter started as an engine rebuilder and ended as an R&D Machinist and Production Manager, I went on to own a commercial printing business, from there to becoming a freelance copier repairperson and computer repair and builder also a freelance graphic artist. My hobby was making real sourdough bread, my wife and I finally worked together as co-owners of a bread-baking business. That chapter ended when she died of cancer.
I suppose I'm on my last chapter...I'm 70 and my children have their own lives in another State, and I just build computers to pass the time until the end of the book.
Your next chapter will probably be an extension of everything that came before...But to repeat myself, I completely understand.
But don't let too many chapters go by before fully connecting with Mellisa, you WILL regret that.

Alex you are a truly fine person and someone with your personality, integrity , and compassion will do well in whatever you decide to do . My Dad told us kids many , many years ago that you can never do wrong by following your heart . It has worked well . I changed careers only twice in my life and was very lucky to have loved both . Again , Dad influenced us by telling us , '' Work is the price you pay for the space you occupy here on earth , so choose wisely because you want to enjoy all those working days . I will be very proud of you all if you are having fun with the work you choose . It will not matter if you choose to wash windows , or build houses or dig ditches if that's what you are happy doing .'' Dad taught us principals , ethics , morals ,etc. by example ( the value of doing your job diligently and to the best of your ability ) . He believed that what goes around , comes around , so always be kind , loving and understanding . Wow , I got carried away . Sorry Alex but you do remind me of my Dad in many ways . Be well , be safe , prosper and ENJOY YOUR NEW ADVENTURES .

I'm really glad to hear you're doing what's best for you. Half the fun of working toward a dream is the journey. Once the goal is achieved it can become a shackle if you won't or can't let yourself follow the next dream. So cheers to you. You'll do great at whatever you choose to do. I'm looking forward to it too.

I had a huge collection of vintage toys and comics that I built over the last 30 years and I sold it all this year and made a nice profit on it all. I feel so free now that I don't have to worry or stress about it any longer. It's very liberating. I did it for the very same reason that Alex is. My parents both passed in the last couple of years and cleaning out their home was one of the most difficult and sad things my siblings and I ever had to. I didn't want to leave my wife and daughter with that burden.

After spending the last 3-4 years decluttering my late brother's house, my in-laws house, and looking ahead to when I will need to declutter my elderly mother's house, I can totally get it. I have started doing the same in my life. Getting things that my children have asked for to them, getting rid of things that they don't want. And then decluttering items that we can give away and allow others to enjoy. My grandmother died and had so few items in her apartment. She had given away the items to her grandchildren, donated to things that needed to be let go, and had only what she needed. I hope to do the same for my children. And I totally understand the focus on your family. I am now in to making memories...not leaving stuff for them to deal with. Hugs to you and Melissa and your children on your next chapter!!!

That's great Alex! I think it's exciting to see what is to come! I don't know why people, strangers, feel the need or the right to question your decisions and need explanations in great details. Your a business man, it's called evolving your business - change and adjust as you progress which is a sign to me, as a great business person. And for factoring your family - a great family man.

Alex, I feel ya. I've made radical changes in my life, with, I feel, a lot less grounding that you have. From entering the Air Force to retiring how and when I did. To getting married, having kids, to unfortunately divorcing. Even my latest change, moving from California to Missouri three years ago. All those, in retrospect, seemed based on pure gut reaction, on a whim. So, feel ya, I understand.

In reality I know nothing about skinning cats…but the look on a person’s face when they hear that absolutely cracks me up.

You're doing the right thing Alex. When your heart is no longer into something or things start becoming too much it's time for a change. My dad & grandpa owned a gas station/store/tire shop business for many years. My dad had colon cancer and survived that then a few years later he decided to retire (Grandpa already did) and sell the business. It was a hard decision to make because we were such a huge part of our little country community and we loved it. But being there from 4:30am - 6pm seven days a week and taking care of all of the day to day stuff involved with running a business was wearing him down, even with us helping out there. He'd be so tired by early afternoon that I'd come in and tell him to go home which he would but his mind was still at work. It was such a relief to him and us when that stress was gone. I recently lost him. I pass by the old store which is vacant now and it does get to me sometimes but I am thankful Dad got to enjoy life for many years before his passing. I know you'll have fun and interesting things planned. Looking forward to it.
