I found the rule concerning the addition of new Action Dice to a player's pool. It reads as follows:
When a player gains or loses an Action die, the gain or loss becomes effective in the next turn: the die is added to, or removed from, the dice pool during the Recover Action Dice and Draw Event Cards phase of the following turn.
Pg.21 of the War of the Ring 2nd Edition rulebook

Great play though lads. Loved the banter and quality of the stream. 1 rule error I picked up. When you go into siege it immediately ends combat. You need to attack a second time with a new dice to initial a new attack.
Wait ... what? Are you sure?
I noticed a few others. The number of hunt dice the shadow player can allocate to the hunt pool (before rolling) is limited by the number of companions still in the fellowship. Also when the fellowship is revealed through the hunt, they can not end their movement in a free people's settlement like a stronghold. You can not also recover corruption by being in a free people's stronghold while revealed.
A couple of strategies that I was surprised were not used or used enough were to minimize corruption damage by sacrificing companions. I make a mad dash at the beginning trying to get corrupted so I can kill Gandalf the first turn. If I get a Will of the West dice, I can then bring him in and get the extra die on the 2nd turn of the game. Depending on dice rolls (and sometimes helpful cards) I can get Aragorn on the 3rd turn. This makes winning for the free peoples MUCH easier.
As the shadow player I load up on eyes early on to corrupt them as much as possible because the greatest threat to losing for the shadow player is for the ring bearers to make it to Mordor. I don't worry about the war as much early on since the free people can't muster units or go to war without being activated. I make the free people's player work for it rather than just handing it to them. My top priority is hitting the ring bearers at hard as I can and blocking Lorien and Minas Trinth so they can't easily heal corruption.
Funinthesun is correct. Page 33 of the second edition, in bold states, "As soon as the defender retreats into a siege...the Stronghold is now considered under siege and the battle is over." It requires another action dice to start combat again. This is partly why strongholds are good for stalling, that and normally while under siege defenders only lose units on a six.
@@TheBigShaun100 Is at least one round of combat forced by the shadow player before the opponent can retreat into siege (and the defensive bonus kicks in)?
@@SpiderDiscord It's the defending army's choice whether to fight a field battle (following standard rules for battle) or to retreat into a siege. So no, shadow player can't force combat.

This was great. I've never gotten to play this game, so it was super neat to see it played. Also: shoutout to that story where Christopher Lee corrected Peter Jackson on how a man being stabbed in the back sounds like when he dies. What a wild legend.

1:40:22 - A small rule error. When The Fellowship gets revealed via hunting, you cannot move them to your Stronghold or City
Also a couple of times FP player joked that he declares The Fellowship in Minas Tirith when they had 0 movement, but I think you forgot that every time you declare in a Stronghold, you heal 1 corruption point, so I believe you missed about 3 heals or so
Concerning cards in battles - I think you missed that first the attacker has to declare if he plays a card or not, and then the defender does the same, and you first resolve the card with the lower initiative number (not on the same time)
2:00:31 I think Shadow player misread the card, because it said if it exceeds companion's level, so you needed to have more than 2 to kill Boromir and you had 2 hits
There was another small rule error. Because the Wormtounge card was on the table, bringing the Witch King into play does not activate Rohan on the political track.
What ana amazing play through - the quotes and banter sum up perfectly why you two are so enjoyable to watch because it isn’t a performance it’s genuine. I played this for the first time last week and it is hilarious how much fun the moments that match to the films are, combined with the completely different ‘how-things-could-have-gone.’
I imagine this took a ton of work but it’s definitely one of my favourite plays you’ve done :D

I am tempted to paint my pieces, just so they are easier to organize and identify. Plus, those painted figures look so good.
Wash them well. Also, use brush on primer. Not spray. Mine are flaking off now and apparently that's the problem.
@@cyclemadnessYeah, they're not the typical mini plastic, they're a softer rubbery kind and that's probably why.
It also seems like these guys have a couple coats of clear coat on there too, that might help.
The paint job on the oliphaunts is nuts.

Hey that was a fun playthrough to watch. Your setup is great, and the banter was funny :) I've been doing lots of playthroughs myself on TH-cam but only on Tabletop Simulator due to COVID. Am looking to do them IRL too when able to.
I've commented on some rule mistakes just to help for future games that I hope you do. Things I've made mistakes on too and have learned on the way.
- At 45:30 you activated Rohan after bringing out the Witch-King, but Wormtongue still prevents this.
- At 1:23:37 you took GTW's new die straight away, which isnt allowed :) You only get it added to your pool for next round.
- At 1:39:00 when you rolled to find the fellowship, and got 1 success. You should have rerolled the other 2 dice because of your army + nazgul in Lorien. It didnt matter though the extra successes are only relevant for drawing eye tiles which you didnt.
- At 1:40:25 you were not allowed to move to Minas Tirith because being revealed by a hunt denies you that choice.
- At 1:59:20 when SP retreated it looked like you made an army larger than 10 units and didnt eliminate them down to the 10 unit limit.
- At 2:18:00 the SP player can only allocate a max of 1 die to the hunt as the fellowship only had 1 companion left in it.
- I dont think you ever rerolled for the hunt by having either SP army units, or nazgul in the region with the fellowship.
When the witch king died, he used three dice but I thought characters (gandalf and gimli) only provide rerolls and no extra dice? so he was supposed to roll only one die? or am I imagining things? 1:01:00
@@TheShapingSickness I believe you are correct. The WK army was only 2 regular, the WK, and 1 Nazgul. So it should have been 2 dice not 3. Note though that some companions or minions do add combat dice but I think thats all just in the LoME expansion.
@@DanThorpeGamingWithIdiots Nope, I have only the original, no expansions, and some companions have the Captain of the West ability that add an extra die. Aragorn is one, Legolas, Gimli and Boromir too I believe. I can't remember right now.
@@JJMB27 Captain of The West doesn't give an extra die, it adds +1 to your combat roll.
also at the start of a new turn in the fellowship phase you turn a revealed ring to hidden I believe

Quick rule thingy: when the fellowship is REVEALED by a Hunt they cannot end up in a free peoples settlement, so they couldn't have gone into Minas Tirith. When it is DECLARED it can end up wherever :)

As great as RTFM's video is this is just great for understanding the pace at which the game goes and seeing more of those minute disadvantages for each side. that being said a lot of people forget after the defenders go into siege the attackers have to spend another die to initiate the first round of combat versus getting a free attack in.

Best way to learn this game for me was Ricky Royals video. I can't speak for the one recommended in this video. I've found this game pretty easy to teach despite the complexity of gameplay. Its so good!

Excellent work on the overview of the game! One of the backwards realities of life is that the easier you make something look the less credit you get for it. And you made that explanation look very easy. Nice job guys

Strategy question: in our games we frequently move Nazgul to revealed fellowship locations to add to future reveal die rolls. Was that skipped intentionally, or no dice for it, or just overlooked?
Quite possibly all those things. While we have a good handful of plays under our belt by this point we definitely have not perfected the finer points of strategy

I have a question though about your lil' debate about the hunt pool dice on 20:14. It sounds like you are dissapointed with 2 dice and not rolling anymore eyes. But, you were able to put max 5 dice into the hunt pool before rolling the action dice, correct?

Since this will we probably be watched by players trying to understand rules, please understand that there are A LOT of rules mistakes (that's common, not insulting them, but watchers should be aware).
I'll point out the really game-ruining one: the shadow player can't add any number of dice to the hunt pool, the max is equal to the number of companions! Otherwise completing the mordor track would be pretty much impossible.
Oh, that makes sense. I thought they felt a bit too powerful. The dark side would have definitely won that way if not for the extremely lucky selection of good tiles at the end.
Did you guys paint this set on your own or is this the anniversary edition which comes pre painted?
If you guys painted it yourself, how did you get around the sticky paint issue on this set that a lot of people are having?
We painted these ourselves. And we put a light matte varnish on the outside of the mini's and that helps with the stickiness. But in truth, our models stick as well.
You both should make commentary videos on Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, that would be the funniest 19 hours ever! ... all in one sitting of course, no messing about here.

When the player of the free peoples reaches the crack of doom (moving frodo to the final circle), does the shadow player get a chance to draw one final tile or does he loose automatically?
Off the top of our heads we can’t remember but as the free people Mike insists that he instantly wins. I’m sure that’s not biased at all…
New action dice are added and removed during phase 1. Recover dice draw cards. Page 19 rule book. Very easy to miss that one.

Gandalf, like the other wizards and Sauron (among others), is a Maia. The Maiar are as old as the world, so just under 55,000 years.

When attacking a stronghold and the defender retreats into a seige, the battle immediately ends before the attack. So there will be no combat on the first attack die and takes another Action dice to start the seige.
The extra dice, from example Gandalf the White is rolled the next round onward as long as they're on the board. So rolling the dice immediately is wrong.
Also I believe the free people player forgotten the hand limit of 6 cards.
And the card that which prevented 1 corruption if legolas and/or gimli is still in the fellowship should have been discarded when legolas left the fellowship before you prevented 1 corruption.
But I know. It's nearly impossible to not slip up with this game.
Also, I don't know if this came up, but as the free people's player, if an elit unit would be downgraded you can take a regular unit from the "dead pool." Aka you don't need/nor should take from the recruitments for downgrading an elit if not necessary.
Isn't there a rule about how many eyes can be allocated before the roll too? I don't think you can add more eyes that exceed the leadership of the fellowship.
@@samt9387 You can't allocate more eyes than companions in the fellowship. So if it is just Gollum, you can only allocate one.

I finally got this game to the table with my nephew last weekend. Keep in mind I do not really like war games. BUT I absolutely love this game. I want to play it again immediately! I love LOTR and the theme makes this game feel incredible and epic. A new favorite.

1:39:00 Because the Fellowship is in a region where there is also a Nazgûl and a shadow army, the shadow player is allowed to reroll twice while the hunt. The reroll is important for determining the hunt damage when an eye tile i picked up, or am I wrong?

He's allowed to reroll two dice, not reroll twice. Subtle but significant difference :D

some small mistakes:
when you get a new dice you can't use it the same turn. so if you bring gandalf the white in play you can use the dice next round.
when you atack a stronghold and the other goes in siege the battle ends so you need a new ation dice to start the battle
you can only locate eyes to the maximum of campanions in the fellowship so in the end you are allowed to have one dice. dice you rolled get in hunt pool
or it reduce the hunt damage by one if you reveal the felowship
Rule clarification question. The rules state that shadow player can only allocate hunt dice up to the number of companions currently in the fellowship. So my question is, what if say there are only 2 companions left (say Legolas and Gimli) and the shadow player placed one shadow die during hunt allocation step. But when they role their dice and get 3 eyes. Do they get to put all 3 eyes into the hunt box? Or only one more b/c there are only 2 companions? Hope that makes sense what I'm asking?
I believe if they are rolled they always go in, but before the Shadow player rolls their dice they may first put some in the hunt box. When they’re doing that, they can only allocate up to the companion amount. But when they’re rolled they always go in. At least I think that’s how it works

I played this game for the first time with my friend today, and I totally misunderstood the combat in this game. I looked back into the rules during my attack phase and I kept ceasing my attacks when I could have continued my assault. This video confirms we played a few parts wrong when we played this game for the first time. Still looking forward to replaying the game, though. This game was a lot of fun
We definitely made mistakes around combat when we first started playing as well. It can be tricky for sure but it's an awesome game so I'm glad you're going to explore it more!

Are their pieces custom made or is their an edition you can buy with those?
They've been painted, normally all the shadow minis are completely red and the free peoples completely blue. The bases have been kept in the original color. They probably did it themselves, I'd guess.

@@ImperialGit Yeah, they've painted the bases in different colors for each faction. All the miniatures are either completely red or blue out of the box.
It's a nice touch, because in ootb, for certain units it can be a bit difficult to distinguish the factions from each other.

Wait, I thought you can't reveal in a friendly stronghold/city (Minas Tirith in this case) if you were revealed by a tile pull. Was that a mistake or am I wrong on that?
Honestly it’s been a bit since we’ve played this so we’d have to check the rules but suffice it to say we made some boo boos while playing so it’s very possible we messed up :)

Siege rules e.g:
SP player attacks Helm's Deep. FP player retreats into the stronghold. The battle is over and FP player should now take a turn.
The Shadow player needs to use another Action die to initiate a siege battle (and the Free Peoples player will have an action in between)

@@hellsmaker I believe you can soak them in warm/hot water to bend them into shape, then put in cold ice water to harder before they bend again.

Gandalf, as a wizard, is around 2000 years old. But, in reality, he is a low rank god that is older than Arda (the planet) itself. He may be from 20.000 (lowballing it) to maybe millions of years old.
Edit: Actually 20.000 is too low for even a lowball. I looked it up and Arda is at the very least 720.000 years old (Tolkien wrote that one Valian year is 144 regular years and there were 5000 Valian years before the first age of the sun, then you also need to add up around 6500-7000 years to account for the three ages after that). Fun fact: Tolkien said that if the real world was the future of his story we would be in the year 1960 of the seventh age of the Sun (he said it in 1960, so checks out with him being a roman catholic) , but he never explained why the seventh.

@@TheBrothersMurph ya the first one I ever painted was hero’s quest. Trying to build my self up to paint Star Wars rebellion. Have a feeling it will be quite the task.
How do you keep track of where the hobbits move? If you don't move it and just get away with moving them in secret. If hypothetically 7 rounds go by, and you moved them in secret 4 times...and then a few rounds go by...how do you keep track of where they are and how many times they moved.
so apologies for slightly fuzzy memories but you don't actually have to remember where they are because their location isn't set until they are found. instead you can basically push to be moving the fellowship spaces forward from their last known location which will be where the fellowship figure is on the map and if saurons forces roll enough hunt symbols (I believe that's the name of the eye symbols) you get found out. you must now choose a new location for the fellowship to be which will be however many spaces you've moved away from the last known location. so if that number was 4 for example, you'd choose a region 4 spaces away from where your figure was last but you can choose where to put it at that moment where that location is

Nick painted them all and unfortunately we haven’t avoided them getting sticky. We’ve tried many things and still they stick. Except Rohan oddly, they are fine.

I believe you need to wash them with soapy water and toothbrush before you paint .. removes the oily residue on the miniatures from the moulding process

it can also reduce the hunt damage by one by choosing to become revealed this can bassicly safe you the game imagine that you are on the last track of morder and you have 10 corruption shadow player draws the 3 hunt tile so you would lose you choose golum ability it becomes 2 and you move and get revealed but doesn't matter because you are at mount doom you win
i really enjoyed that. though i did suspect some rules were not being followed...

Around 1:08:30 Its been a while since I played but I'm pretty certain combat cards only affect the round they are played. So Devilry of Orthanc only grants hits on 5 for that round. It also only affects the Combat Roll, not leader reroll (assuming the whole card was read out, and if memory serves).

I do not undestand the strategy (talked about it at the end). Why whould you want to attack Gondor in the first place? There is not many opportunities to activate other factions (such as Gondor) without splitting fellowship, get the companions there, get the right cards, and spend even more dice to get them at war. Meanwhile, you can get the Saruman as fast as possible, mustard enormous armies, and attack and/or hold strategic points close to the elven cities. Once the good guy tries to create army there or help with other nations, he is already spending too many dices on defending his cities away from Gondor or Rohan (while the bad guy is making sure that fellowship cannot properly heal). I feel like the bad guy has advantage as he can roll more dices, spend army infinitely and aggresively attack to pressure the good guy. If you, as the bad guy, strategize with Gondor and allow Rohan to activate, it is exactly what the good guy wants. No point on invading other regions than elves (for the majority of game time, unless late when you need points). The only major problems may be subsequent unlucky rolls for hunts and Suruman being alone in the city and letting him die based on the card's effect. Am I missing something here?
