All lens have their strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to the photographer/videographer to work around the weakness. You have your preference and dislike, but everyone is still entitled to their own choice so there is no right or wrong. The question is, did the lens deliver what you need? And everyone's answer is different.

Hi, I have a question, what's the difference between taking a picture of a quarter with a 1:1 macro lens, or a zoom lens, zoomed to make the quarter fit the screen to the same size as the 1:1 ratio macro lens? If the answer is nothing, because I would get the same result, then why would I need to purchase a macro lens? Thank you for your help. I'm trying to figure out if I can do macro photography with the lenses I already have, (16-35 24-70 & 70-200) I do not have a macro lens yet, but I'm thinking about buying the SONY FE 90mm F2.8 G OSS full-frame lens. Thank you.

Firmware update needed to bring in down sampled 4k 60 option. Even if it does over heat after some time. No one shoots 4k 60 for long periods. I sold my r5c to get this camera and what a let down from canon.

But what about stabilization...It's fine for photos, but for video, it's terrible. Sony cameras have awful stabilization. It's impossible to shoot handheld video with the A7S III using a 90mm lens without internal stabilization. The lens becomes absolutely useless for video in this case...

which is better Sony or tamron?

Cool, nice overview. It would have been interesting to see the shape of the bokeh highlights beyond f/5,6, at f/8 and f/11 since, as you say, macro work usually involves stopping down and because Tamron's definition of "circular aperture" mentions it being round up until and including f/5,6. So do we get nice sunstars at f/8 or what? : )

Hmm. It seems like you didn't even have time to properly test it. I'd be inclined to see this review redone after a while so that you can share some more experiences with it.

I agree that the Sony 90mm's major problem is AF. It struggles big time almost in any situation.

Thanks David! Nice Lense, but I have already the Sony one. Sadly, it seems that they ave forgott the AF/MF-Button😅 But as you already mentionned, you can program the MF/AF-switch on the button with the Lens utility software👍🏼

Ef 35 1.4 II has perfect center wide open sharpness and perfect close down sharpness across the frame. In practice this is almost always enough. I would even say that the first generation Sigma Art is almost always enough. If you need more, you can buy Sigma 40 1.4 which is an Otus level lens. This new lens feels like Canon is squeezing out profits by making the product cheaper. It's simply much less light, much less "lens" overall, than the 35 1.4 should provide. And they try to hide it with the sensor's image quality reserves - no, I don't buy it.

Fantastic review, there are so many big TH-camrs who don’t review lenses properly anymore. I think Nikon missed an opportunity, they should’ve made the lens better and pleased a lot more people, just imagine if it was a 1.4 S.

Nice performance from Canon. As for comparison with different brand, I dont think that edge performance is significant in reality. You wouldnt shoot subject in 5% edge of frame anyways or keep camera on tripod without even slightest attempt to follow the subject, so less than 100% coverage is fine. Also comparing it with A1 or Z8 would be more reasonable concidering their market segments and technology. An idea for further testing - how does camera behave with multiple moving subjects? I have seen R5 and R5II compared in-field shooting birds, in that video it looked like R5II was highly successful focusing on static target, but original R5 performed better with multiple subjects and combination of moving and static subjects in the frame. R5II was too fast switching between subjects and sometimes got confused when there were some subjects in background too and started focus hunting. Original R5 held focus properly on originally focused subject.

Buy a video camera if you want to shoot video. Us still photographers would really appreciate it.

How would you compare the 4k60 sraw vs the hevc lined skipped? I’m really disappointed there is no over sampling 4k60. In the CVP test the sraw looked pretty bad

About your answer. You didn’t understand, nothing to worry about. I explain you again. As I mentioned z9/8 either have same speed or slower sensor readout speed than r5 in video mode. I ask you to dig deeper into this question and if you want to be professional. z9/z8 (data absolutely the same) has same or slower readout speed for video and faster for photo compared to old r5. That’s the data compared with old r5 because video readout speed data for r5m2 is not available now. Readout speed 4k60 z9 14.46ms, r5 9.73 ms, 8k30 z9 14.42ms, r5 15.59, 4k24 z9 14.46ms, r5 15.53. For photos right, z9/z8 is faster. 3.73 ms vs 6.3ms for r5m2, but r5m2 has mechanical shutter up to 12fps where readout speed equal 0ms without any rolling shutter with even better dynamic range. In video canon has 8k60, clog2 and raw. That’s why z9/8 is much worse in photo and video modes. Readout speed for video and photos is completely different for all cameras. So if Nikon z9 faster for photos it doesn’t mean same for video.

I was super unimpressed with the 35 F1.8s, which was disappointing coming from F-Mount and loving 35mm framing. Happy to pick up this new artistic 35 1.4. Price was great, for me. Re no manual switch, can't you just use full time focus ring override, then back button AF to get AF back? I could be wrong.

Thank you for your thorough indepth review for both these cameras. It just simply proved to me that keeping both would make a lot of sense. Especially as someone who loves portability and ability to have two photo cameras at my disposal in case it calls out for it during events and also the fact that R5C still shoot 4k 60fps downsampling and also better low light performance. There will be moments wheres each camera will still shine. Do you only use one camera for all your shoots?

For the high ISO comparison, did you try comparing the 3 cameras at ISO 8000, and ISO 16000 which might « better » steps for the R5II above the second base ISO of 4000? Just curious if R5II still lags behind on these steps (as opposed to the comparison you did on the traditional 6400, 12800, 25600 increments which make sense and favour a camera with a second base ISO of 3200). Thanks!
