How To Install a DVD Player In Your Vehicle -EricTheCarGuy

  • CarID was kind enough to send me a DVD player from Boss to install into my 2001 Honda Odyssey. Originally, I had thought it would be a pretty straightforward installation. It turned out to be a bit more than that. The headliner had to come out several times to make sure that the right measurements were made for the mounting bracket. The mounting bracket also needed a custom installation in order to make it work. Not to mention getting 'creative' with the electrical hook ups. Truth is, this is typical with installing aftermarket accessories like this. You need to be prepared for anything.
    In this video I walk you though the steps I took to overcome these challenges. Hopefully it will help you if you are also wanting to install a DVD player of this type.
    Thanks again to CarID. Here's a link to their site: www.carid.com

    People say he should have just gotten a ipad and use that but did you think about how safe it would be to leave in the car ? thats right no unless you take it out and in everytime this is the next best thing its mounted on so they would have to do all this work just to remove it and run off with it i think this is better since it adds a more factory look to the car

    If you're worried about a rattle inside the DVD player I would rap the ends of the RCA cables with electrical tape and that should keep them from rattling.

    The sharpie worked ok I guess, but what I would have done differently is install the mounting screws into the roof bracket, put some sort of paint on the heads of them, then mock the headliner into place. The paint from the mounting screws would then transfer to the back of the headliner giving you your locations to drill.

    What a nice van! I'm jealous.
    Your ground is good. You should always keep ground wires short and connect them directly to the body of the car. That will always have less resistance than a wire to the ground terminal of the battery. Don't run grounds to the battery. You dun good with the ground, just the way it is.
    The 12V constant wire should be red! Other people might work on your van someday. It is irresponsible to use non-standard wire colors. It would be best to run it directly to the positive battery terminal and fuse it within 12 inches of the battery. The 12V switched wire should go to the accessory wire from the ignition. That wire should be yellow! Also, solder your splices into the wires directly or use scotchlocks to attach the wires. Don't "redneck rig" your power wires to the fusebox. Even if someone sent you a fancy adapter, it's not the right way to do it and you know it.
    While you had the headliner out, you should have run RCA cables to the radio area. Don't depend on the crappy FM modulator.
    Nice Channellock crimper! Those crimps work great. I've never had one fail. You don't need to solder everything.

I can't get tech support to help me out at all with my question on it. They answered me once and I asked a couple follow up question and they never respond. I would not use them again passed on there very bad tech support

    Note to self and others.
    Remove metal bracket from dvd player, place to desire location with Headliner still in the vehicle take black marker put dots on headliner for drilling through. Then remove headliner do a mock up install with either piece of fiberglass or piece of scrap metal laying around.
    Rule of thumb measure twice drill once.

    I bought the same Boss DVD player to install in my sisters car and remembered watching this. She has a Acura MDX 2006, which is nearly similar to Erics install here. Too bad you didn't show how to remove the headliner cause that was a pain. Installed a Android stereo as well and wired audio and video to and from both devices, plus a reverse camera. That took me at lest 3 full days to install it all.

  • @nicholaswatkins3123
    @nicholaswatkins3123 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Looks MINT! I thought newer headliners were fiberglass, which makes me think it would hold up alright to having a dvd player hang from it. Then again you do have kids, which tend to be hard on things. Haha. I was cringing when you were lining up the template. I remember drilling out holes to mount a roof rack system and thinking to myself I hope these all line up.

    Note: when you install a power tap you must determine which side of the fuse panel is hot. This can be done with the fuse out and a tester. Then you install the tap with the fuse in it for only your new cut and make sure it works. Then install the original fuse. This prevents you getting the fuses in series with each other.

    • @brandtsmith8266
      @brandtsmith8266 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I looked through the replies because I was going to say the same thing. If you grab the fused side for your "add-a-circuit" you've just added to the load of the original fuse.

    Eric, as a person who typically does the twist, solder, glue-heatshrink method, I have no problem with crimp connectors as long as they're done right and with the right tools. Most of the time people use pliers or a hammer, or they'll use crimping pliers, but they'll use the ones made for noninsulated crimp terminals and end up destroying or penetrating the insulation. Yours are dual purpose by the quick glance I got at them (and looking at the link) both insulated and noninsulated crimping terminals. A connection like that I have no problem with at all!

    Cool install! I found it easier to add circuits to my truck by building a separate diy fuse/relay box. Amazon always has excellent deals on fuse holders, fuses, and 30 amp relay connectors (relays included)! I've spliced from the hot switch wire of the ignition and had zero issues.

    Don't ever drill into the cross members the way he has (perhaps why the video is cut), it's a sure fire way to go all the way through the roof panel on the other side.
    Either mount the bit deep in the chuck or use self tapping screws that can't reach the skin

    If you'd smear some children's water based paint onto the DVD bracket and then mount the head liner and press it onto the bracket it would leave a mark on the inside of the headliner, that way you'd be 100% sure you're right on the mark. Cause the way you did it was quite risky.

    When I make such installations, I always try to mount connectors on the cables, it makes the re-installation so much easier. The best place to find multipin connectors are at the salvageyard, I usually take the opportunity to cut off a number of connectors when I'm there, you never know when you need one. I think it's funny that there were no connectors on the dvd head unit, there is always iso connectors on stereo head units. But the easiest way is probably to find a pair of iso connectors where you buy your stereo.

    When you install one of those "add a circuit" fuse holders you need to make sure you don't install it backwards, that way it pulls power from the Un-fused side of the existing circuit, otherwise you are basically adding it to an existing circuit. In other words you should be able install the "add a circuit" in a way that it can run the DVDs player without the fuse for the rear wiper installed

    Hey Eric, i know this might not be the right video to be making this request, but would you be willing to do a video on valve stem seal replacement? I am working on a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse, with a 2.4L 4g64 engine. I do not plan on pulling the head and will be using the same technique shown in your valve spring removal video. However, it would be great to see how properly remove the seals, how to identify a failing seal, and how to properly install the new seals. I also have a somewhat persistent tick.While the rocker rails are off, it only makes sense to replace the lifters as well. Maybe you have done a video I haven't stumbled across yet, but there are several videos on youtube with different methods of bleeding the lifters; some people aren't bleeding them at all. What is your take on this? I already ordered the parts, so there is a good possibility the job will be done by the time you would be able to do such a video; however, it seems like a common job and a walkthrough from a trusted source would do us all well. Keep up the great work.

    I installed this DVD Player and everything is fine.. Now When I turned off the car and turn it on again. I have to go and turn the DVD manually even though I left it on. Is it normal? I know the DVD starts from where I left off without any problem. The Problem is that even if I'm in the HDMI Mode when I turn it off and on it would start on the DVD instead of the HDMI input. Also I have to turn it on with the remote or manually all the time. Any Suggestions?

      He didn't install the plate inside the headliner, he mounted the plate to the metal underneath the headliner.

    Does the ground have to be the same thickness as the power wire? For example if I use the 12 gauge ad a circuit and run 12 gauge power wire from it to the unit, can I use the much smaller ground wire coming out of the unit without hurting anything?
