Rusty Broken Oldtimer Scooter Restoration - A Time-Tested Beauty!

- In this video, I restore a broken and rusty vintage scooter from 1969.
More about the restoration:
I decided to restore this scooter because I liked the retro design and knew from the beginning that this would be a very challenging project. I love projects like this. It was very rusty and broken, especially the wheels were full of holes caused by rust. The restoration process took about a month. Month in which I worked on it every day for a good few hours.
The restoration process went smoothly, but I had trouble finding new parts, especially the 100mm spokes. Very few people make spokes that small, but in the end, I managed with the help of a very nice guy who owns a bike repair shop. On this occasion, I also want to thank him in case he ever sees this video. The wheels were damaged by rust and time, and I think I spent about half the restoration time rebuilding them.
Printing the handlebar grips was excellent but challenging, but the 3D design was bought off the internet for only $2.46 and modified a bit by me to fit on this scooter. One day, I decided to leave the shop early and paused the print. This caused that ugly line you may have seen in the video, so I made another one. It was hard because I had almost finished the project and had to wait another 7 hours; that's how long it took to print one handle, but the wait was worth it.
I also chose to paint the scooter as it was in the past. Someone over the original color applied the green paint. I couldn't leave it green because I would be violating the primary definition of restoration. I'm delighted. I even found an original sticker with the company's name that produced it.
More about the scooter and the company:
I bought it off an antique site for $39.68, thinking it would make a great restoration video and deserved another chance.
The scooter was manufactured in the People's Republic of Poland (PRL) by the ROMET company. They closed the factory a few years ago, but the brand has recently returned to the market. In 1949, the largest Polish bicycle factory, "Romet," was founded in Bydgoszcz.
To my surprise, tires, and tubes were produced by the Dunlop company. This means that Dunlop, a Western company, somehow managed to do business with a country under Moscow's influence, being a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Usually, this was rare in Central and Eastern European countries. I love how this oldtimer scooter turned out, and I'm glad I could save it from falling apart. and I hope you will enjoy this video, too!
Now it's perfectly functional and can be used again!

Thank you so much for watching my videos and for your support! Cheers!

Hey - if you use a new pair of gloves, and apply the metal putty with your finger, you can fill the holes and not leave all that extra stuff that has to be sanded off.
Lovely
It looks absolutely 😃
Antique and vintage are love❤! Keep it up!
I had same scooter back in 1960s. Given to me by my father in Russia. Watching you restore this scooter brot my childhood memories. Excellent restoration. Thank you for the video 👍
I'm glad that this video brings you beautiful memories. Thank you for watching!
A child's best friend!❤
When putting the grips on the handlebars . . . a small amount of liquid soap helps get them on and when it dries, it acts like glue to keep them in place
I didn't know this technique. Thank you!
Even better technique imo: use compressed air. Shoot it underneath the grips while sliding them on, much less mess. Great video
I will try this too. Thanks for sharing and watching! 🙂

Hairspray works best
It was all well done but the tire rescue was amazing
You should consider removing the tires from the rims and installing a rim band (thin strip of rubber that goes around the inside of the rim) so that the spokes won't puncture the tube. That's why all spoke rims, including these, have that band.
I know, I just forgot about it at that point.
Hot damn that's a lovely restoration. Gotta love when a vintage piece it brought back to it's former glory.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you! 🙂
When I saw the wheels, I didn't expect you restored them 😅
Your work is amazing! A beautiful restoration 👌
When o saw the I said the same! 😅😅 Thank you 🙂
Same here
@@rustyshadesrestoration any longterm experience for the rims? i like your work, good job all in all but i would feel save with the rim repair, so it would be interresting to know if they hold up, everything else really nice!
Another masterpiece! Such a pleasure to watch! Thank you 💕
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Cheers!
I could watch nothing but sandblasting footage and be satisfied. Lol
I want back in the 60s und 70s in my Childhood. There were similar scooters in east germany in the 1970s. 😃 Good Job!
Thanks! I'm glad that I could bring back those memories to you! 🙂
This was great! I like the way you structure your videos, with some disassembly, then restoration of those parts, more disassembly, more restoration, etc. I prefer it to complete disassembly, then restoration of everything and then re-assembly. It makes the process clearer to people like me, with little knowledge of the steps involved (plus, I don't forget what a part is for as easily!).
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Your feedback it is so valuable to me. Cheers!
This is called perfectionist 👍Great job Sir 🤟🏻
Thank you! 🙂
You are an artist. Excellent job. Congrats.
I am doing my best! Thank you!
Hi! ✌ What a marvelous beauty you've re-created! I can't get enough at looking at the finished scooter. I love the close-ups you give us at the end; they show how perfect you made everything that was almost destroyed. I remember this scooter's time and the popularity of them among the young boys. I know there were millions of memories created with these. And I loved that you went with the original colors. What a knock out compared the that green. 😩 Thank you, thank you, for giving us insight into this beautiful piece of the past. Blessings, and take care. 💟
Thank you so much Kyletta. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video! Have a great week!
...LOOKIN' GOOD, NICE WORK, KEEP WELL...

Hand sanitizer works well also
Qué hermoso, me encantó.

China will never make craftmanship like this!

Greetings from Kraków, Poland! 🙂
Great work. For some reason, watching this video makes me crave a Big Mac and large fries. 🍔 🍟
Haha 😄 Now you woke up the Big Mac desire on my head too.
Beautiful
I'm glad you like it Bob!
I had one very similar but the mudguards and wheels were chrome, the Scooter was a much brighter Red and handle bar grips were white. Also running board had a grooved rubber mat so your foot did not slip off.
Excellent work,
Thank you Peter!
wow, i love your restoring videos❤️
Happy to know that! Thanks for watching! 🙂
Hello mister beautiful restoration very good job well done
Hi Vincent! Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Great job and cool idea!
Thanks bro! ✊️
Pretty sweet!
I'm glad you like it! Cheers
A nice job and well dune😁👍👍
Thank you! 😀
We needed a test ride lol!
Haha, I'm too heavy for that 😅
Great restoration
Thank you Larry!
I wanted to see you try it☹️ but it was cool at last👍👍
I'm too heavy for this scooter, that's why I didn't jump on it 😅
What a beautiful scooter! We had one of a similar design, but different brand, when I was a kid. Good and sturdy!
Nice! Do you remember the name of the brand?
@@rustyshadesrestoration We still have the scooter but there is no brand on it that I can see. It would have been something either Australian (where I live) or British, I think.
Fantastic job 😊
Thank you Maria! 🙂
very good job
Thank you David! 🙂
ślicznie wyszło gratulacje!
Dzięki! 😀
Very nice.
I would of made the wooden foot stand colour in black if it was me . I enjoyed it just the same. David Carter.
Thank you, David. I found a photo with this scooter and the wooden foot stand wasn't painted, that's why I choose not to paint it, but yes, black could fit well though.
Ficou lindo
Love restorations on retro pieces. Great work man!
Subbed.
Thank you! I appreciate 🙏
Nice job Rusty!
Thank you Alan! 🙂
Genialna robota ❤
Dziękuję
nice job 👍👍 it s so beatiful
Thank you Sedat! 🙂
I love oiled wood. But in this particular case, it was better to paint the wood.
Nevertheless, a lot of work has been done and done well. I was intrigued by the through holes in the rims, but you solved that problem too. Of course I like your video.
Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed the video. It was a lot of work indeed, but when you like what you do, you don't feel it so much. Cheers and thank you for your time!
Excellent restoration, subscribed.
Thank you Robett! 🙂
Nice work well done 😊
Thank you Andrew! 🙂
Nice video mate ! Keep going ! 😁👍
Thank you! 😀

Very cool, nice job.😊
Thanks buddy! ✊️
Gracias! 🙂
Woah a very impressive video, I really like your video. You give such amazing detail. You take off each piece and fix it one by one. Awesome job, bro❤🍻🍻
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Thank you 🙂
Thank you!
This is one of your best restorations so far, the rims came out awesome! 🤩 Also the eyes on the vacuum cleaner at 3:59 😆😆😆 It looks just like a platypus 😆
Hahah, indeed 😂
For this kind of sand lasting ......you need steel grid. 1 hour and you are done.
Happens. Anyway, this scooter will be displayed only, nobody will ride it everyday.
I like the original t-shirt if you have 4 xlg
Excellent work...please tell me why did you use both powder and spray paint?why 2 types?
Hi. Because I don't have such a big oven to bake larger pieces. Thank you! 🙂
@@rustyshadesrestoration Perfect thanks for answer me ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Thank you 😊
Why didnt youbsandblast the fenders from the start and you used paint stripper?
Because the fenders had 2-3 layers of paint, the sandblasting media will get bad immediately, and it will take a lot of time to clean it. Stripping some paint will make your life easier.
😮👏👏👏
the wood platform lets down
What will you do instead?
Do you think everyone has a chrome bath in the workshop? I tell you that no, so I did what was possible. 🤦🤷♂️
Easy to comment around, hard to make stuff 🙂
How long did this take? Sensational!
Hi Alexander. I worked on this project almost one month. Without filming and editing I guess can be a little bit faster.
@@rustyshadesrestoration thanks, já, man, that's quiet an effort!
Gees-o-petes... how many layers of paint were there? Lol
Hahaha 😁
When bluing do you have to let sit in oil or lubricant afterwards or is just bluing ok?
It is good to let it for at least 8h in lubricant, otherwise some oxyde can appear again.
For the best result: cleaned well, acetone, bluing, lubricant/oil.
Very 👍
🙂
👍
I'm glad you like it!
By the looks of it that metal putty isn't easy to sand...huh?
Takes some time..
Why did he wipe the parts with acetone ?
The parts were cleaned with acetone to remove the debris. In this way the paint will stick to the metal better and you will get a perfect finish. 🥰
@@rustyshadesrestoration I see.
Next time use rust oleum spray on paint remover
Why that's better?
🤗👍🙏🇻🇪
😍😘❤️
Thanks for watching 🍻
If I wasn't green originally what was it? Red yeah me personally like the green better 😅
It wasn't green. Someone just repainted it.
@@rustyshadesrestoration still fun watching these vids 🤣
I also watch a lot, not only create them😅
