In this video I take two 2022 build Fender Custom Shop guitars that hark back to the 1950s era starting with an iconic 1952 Telecaster - Nocaster Blonde Blackguard model. Ash body, finished in an aged nitro-cellulose lacquer typical of the Nocaster period, a maple rift sawn neck with 21 narrow tall 6105 frets and a 57 Soft ‘V’ neck shape. The fingerboard has a compound radius starting at 7.25 at the headstock and tapering to 9.5 towards the body. The pick-ups are Hand-Wound, Original Black Guard 51-52 Single-coils in combination with a ’51 modified Nocaster wiring set-up. See in-depth review of this model - ( • UB:33 Custom Shop Fend... )
Next up, the Limited run 1950s Stratocaster Relic in a Chocolate 2 tone wide-fade sunburst over an Alder body which, while it is based on the 1956 model, has been given the body contours of the 1957 period. The Maple rift sawn neck is pretty chunky to the feel and is modelled on a 1954 Soft V while the 9.5 radius fretboard comes with 21 Jumbo 6100 frets. The pick-ups are Hand-Wound Fat 50s while the selector switch is the more modern 5 way blade type, which was introduced in the late 1970s. How do they compare? While this is just a very general overview it clearly shows the differences (Stratocaster tremolo and 5 blade selector aside) between these great iconic guitars, yet the Fender tones from each instrument are unmistakable... Enjoy!

Like them both, Stu but if I were to choose one it would be the Tele - as a recent convert, I now love their simplicity and versatility 👍

Hi Derek - I agree... simple yet versatile - not a lot you can add to that. If I only had the 52 Tele I would possibly put the 'Twisted Tele' pick-up at the neck, I really like the combination of that with the Blackguard 51/52 at the bridge. I only re-discovered the Telecaster because of my recording journey despite that guitar type being the first electric guitar I owned back in the early 70s. Regards: Stu

Interesting, the 50s strat has an eleven-screw guard instead of 8 which would be period correct. Was that stock? *edit: Shouldn't have paused it to type this comment LOL Not ten seconds later you described just that LOL

Hi Craig - well spotted... ;-) For anyone interested in what Craig mentioned, that's not familiar with this Custom Shop model. The early 1950s Strat's (8 hole) & Tele's (5 hole) had fewer pickguard screws than the later models. Due to the material of those early guards they found that they would often buckle and also shrink causing cracking in the guard. The CS Fender 50s Strat reviewed here is a kind of collection of the best 1950s parts with the addition of the 5 blade selector (original is 3) and 11 screws on the guard. For those interested in more detail I have done a couple of videos on various Stats. Regards: Stu
