Uncle Dave played resonator banjos from the time they became available in the early 1920sr, but by the late 1930s arthritis had afflicted him, and Dave had difficulty manipulating the heavier resonator banjos. So he had Gibson specially make these open back Mastertones like the one shown here. It has an extremely mellow tone. Twelve years ago I was lucky enough to be with a group of banjo historians George Gruhn invited to see his private collection that was at the top of the store at the previous location and play the one of the five George Gruhn owned, Earl Appreciated Uncle Dave enough to have made an effort to get one of his own. That is interesting since Uncle Dave famously dismissed Earl when he was rocking the Opry in 45 and 46, saying "he's not a bit funny" since banjoists had been reduced to "rube" comedians like Stringbean until Earl showed folks what could be done with a five string!
