I felt that during this interview, Noel found an ideal father figure in the host. It probably why he briefly showed his vulnerable side that we rarely see in other places.
One the best talk show hosts that ever lived on the longest running talk shows on the planet. The quality declined when Gay Byrne retired. RIP Gay Byrne.
I've always believed that Noel Gallagher's acerbic and crotchety exterior is more of a schtick. He is a true romantic and a sentimental dreamer at heart. He would never admit to that but you can hear and feel it in his songs.
I feel like the brothers public squabbles’ have changed the both of them for the worst…at least in terms of their public personas. Every interview they do now has the obvious elephant in the room of whether the other brother could/should be brought up, and so they both feel the need to keep a tough exterior in case they have to dismiss the other one. Takes away from their usual personalities, imo (especially Noel, Liam’s gonna do Liam ether way)…
Early interviews(especially the one in Ireland) show a cute outgoing youngster. Humans are strange beings, sometimes you just don't know what weird turn might've been taken
He went on this show because it was his mom's favorite show and he was determined not to do anything to embarrass her. Just read it in the book Getting High by Paolo Hewitt and wanted to see if video of this performance existed.
This show and the presenter was an institution in Ireland so it was a big deal for the son of Irish immigrants. He was most likely raised on stories about this show and was on his best behaviour for his mother.
So great to see Noel back then. Little did he know where he’d be sat in 2023. A rock n roll legend. Just a gifted, gifted songwriter. He couldn’t have known then his positive lyrics and uplifting tunes would lift my soul (and countless others) from the depths of depressions to the highest highs. I’m sure others can relate. He’s a few years older than me and my fav songwriter in my generation, by far……
Just came from watching the late late tribute to gay Byrne where they told a story about Noel. After the Omagh bombing they had a 15 year old girl who was a pianist in the crowd who had been blinded in the bombing. Noel gave gay Byrne a signed copy of she’s electric to give to her (she was an oasis fan) on the condition that she never give up music. Top bloke.
What a great interview..The host Gay Byrne just chatted with Noel with no scripted questions and the questions from the audience was so old school..Then he plays a great version of Live Forever..Great piece of footage
+TheOriginalMoc Except Pop Will Eat Itself, with them he was not a caring grandpa, he was a moderately (and probably appropriately) annoyed and scornful grandpa. They were kinda drugged senseless and started trashing the equipment and the stage, though. All the while wearing sellotape on their faces. But even then, Gay didn't lose his mind or his Irish warmth (of which he is a prime example).
I remember this from back in the day! I love this 'version' of Noel, humble and soft-spoken, so easy-going. Gaybo did such a great job putting him at easy and making him feel among friends. Wonderful atmos. Thanks for uploading it 🙂
So much of this just aches of another and better age, the very polite even shy audience and the old fashioned presenter..it actually feels more 80s than 90s..no talk of politics or any other nonsense we are plagued with now..loved it
Really good point which makes me smile and feel sad at the same time. How did the world get so shitty and complicated? The genie is well and truly out the bottle though and there's no going back. Unfortunately.
The Late Late Show with Gay Byrne was amazing, guests were encouraged to talk and even debate with each other. The crowd would get involved too, some historic episodes where politicians and bishops were grilled by audience members. Truly a unique show which will never be seen again.

What a really insightful clip. He was a young guy here at the height of the Oasis fame. Not always sure people understand the natural talent Noel has as a musician/ songwriter. 30+ years he's been writing & performing at a top level, some of the best known songs of a generation
He wasn't a walking ego either. His songs are boring and not very good now, and he's become such an arrogant prick. At least that's how he comes across.

Gay Byrne and Noel both at the top of their game. Gay had such class. He must be sorely missed in Ireland. Noel had real emotion in that performance.
The host acted so fatherly towards Noel, it's kinda sweet to see
