I think a great Hotshot Crew is a combination of the many strengths each member brings to the crew. There are some basic things to look for in every crew member: fit beyond the pack test, drive, positive attitude, leadership, fearlessness and respect for the fire, 6th sense about fire, courage especially to speak up when something doesn't seem right, willingness to take care of your buddy (ies), sense of humor; ability to learn, retain, and apply lessons; and commitment to teamwork. Understand that while all of us have strengths we have weaknesses too and we need to be willing to cover for each others' weaknesses. In the 1960s I had the great fortune to work for two men who, in my opinion, were the greatest hotshots ever: Chuck Hartley and Paul Gleason. I have tried to model my life and careers around them and their example.
