I love how the sopranos sing that high note almost casually... It gives a very different feel to the piece. Also, every time the tenors sing the "Hallelujah"... Very relaxed.. 😍 The best interpretation IMO.
I show this clip to my choirs to demonstrate focus and attitude. So often, choirs are either focused OR active. This is a great combination of the two.
Every time I hear or sing the end of this piece, I think of a workshop my choir did with Brainard. I still chuckle when I remember him galloping back and forth across the stage, arms a-flailin', in full preacher-on-fire mode, trying to teach us the timing of the back and forth with the high G's. "Then WHY? A-every, He deLIVered, YES he did! YES! Delivered Daniel from the LION! Oh yes, Oh tell me WHY? a-every, he deLIVered... Fun time. And we never sang the end wrong again after that
This performance of Didn't My Lord was incredible. I loved.. LOVED the dynamic phrasing!!! I hope I can convince my professor to allow us to learn this piece next semester!!
I can do a technical analysis too, but instead, let me say this performance leaves me breathless. It has everything that this wonderful and very demanding setting by the immensely gifted Moses Hogan calls for. In addition, I challenge any group anywhere to sing with more spirit and confidence that the well prepared Nathanal Dett Chorale. This group, this conductor, and this performance deserves my highest praise. I say "Well done".
I am used to this song being sung by quartets and not a choir so for me to have this kind of execution and performance is of the highest order. Well done as well.
I would find you here saying that. My ears aren't so tuned that I can tell if something is flat just by listening and relating it to my past experiences with the piece. Oh, and I know someone in this video! Go Jamie Hillman!
I like the build on the call and response on "deliver daniel from the..oh yes he did" something wasn't quite locking for me with the trio and at 2:38 she was flat..
It is just dependent upon the arrangement, but in the original first arrangement (not the original composition), the "Hallelujah" was attributed to the soprano.
This is most certainly gospel music. The classical undertone is slightly more forward in this song, but that does not remove it from the list of gospel pieces.
To the haters out there: 1) When Moses was alive he was on the advisory board for this group, he knew what his songs sounded like as sung by them and he approved. 2) This is the raw sound recording for a music video of the same song that was filmed by Bravo TV. The produced version sounds much better, and if any of you haters out there heard your own voice in raw, recorded by hanging choir mics from a live performance, you wouldn't sound have as good.
@CharlieBladeRemus I looked, but couldn't find it... i think you can get it on iTunes... i have the CD and the DVD of their concert with that tune on the program...
Alright for the Aeolians!!! I am from the Morehouse College Glee Club tradition myself lol. I actually like this presentation of this spiritual. I've spoken to "Dr."s William and Rosephanye Powell, Uzee Brown, David Morrow, Roland Carter and they all have commented on the difficulties of performing spirituals "authentically". We all know that the slaves would never have utilized these contrapuntal and polyphonic musical devices. I think authenticity in performance is a bit of a misnomer.

DOPE
when we sang this song in school i passed out and smacked my face on the piano
My face is red and I’m lightheaded by the end every time
So what was the message from above?
I hope you were okay.
🤣
This is really the most memorable song I sang in school in the 90s.
This man is truly blessed with talent. I am sure he is making music with the angels now. RIP.
If you mean the people in the video, we’re all still alive and well. 🎉

My ears aren't so tuned that I can tell if something is flat just by listening and relating it to my past experiences with the piece.
Oh, and I know someone in this video! Go Jamie Hillman!

But the deeper question is, are we all listening to the same performance???
I get to solo this. Hellyes.
Starting at 2:18 my absolute favorite part of the song!

Great
the cortette is singing so WIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I like the build on the call and response on "deliver daniel from the..oh yes he did" something wasn't quite locking for me with the trio and at 2:38 she was flat..
A virtuoso performance, one of the best I've ever witnessed in my life! I'll be looking for their CDs!

@musicalifer why yes! Isn't it fashionable? Took me about as long to put it on as it took you to think of that snappy comeback.
If you were still interested, its by Moses Hogan! look for that on whatever choral music website you use
