    Excellent video as always, Jane. I have normally 3-4 pairs of shoes in my rotation as well. I have wider feet, so I need to pick up shoes that I can get in at least a 2E width and I'm also on a bit of a budget. In my rotation I always have one pair of Asics Cumulus, Brooks Ghost and New Balance 880 and like you mentioned, I often pick up older models online when they go on sale. Each shoe is neutral with good cushioning, but I do enjoy the rotation and the different feel on my foot. Also, being a pretty big guy, I like to give each pair of shoes at least one day off before wearing them again as I do notice that they have a chance to "recover". For my recovery day shoes, I get the Asics Cumulus in 4E (in these I also wear slightly thicker more cushioned socks) which really allows my feet to spread out and helps my feet and legs recover after longer/harder efforts or when my legs are feeling especially tired.       Thanks for sharing your shoe choices, Scott!! This comment is also helpful for anyone else who is looking for recommendations for a wider running shoe. I think the whole though process around "giving the foam time to rest" does make a lot of sense especially for a larger person or someone using them for high mileage. Training is going well, it's all about just getting out there each day and sticking to the plan!

    Great advice Jane! I'm on the fence regarding resting your shoes so the foam can expand, but I'm all about specializing shoes for the type of run you are doing on a given day! Minimum is a high-cushion recovery/long run shoe and a daily trainer for aerobic and tempo days. Keep pushing!

    Endorphin Speed and Endorphin Pros are my favorite shoes - I've been through 2 pairs of each!

      @@runningwithjane You wont regret it! All the hype around that shoe is true. So light and so bouncy - you cant run slow in that shoe! Enjoy!

    I did my first marathon in Brooks Adrenaline and could hardly walk the next day because my feet hurt so much. But I've had surgery on both big toes and have almost no range of motion in both, so that might have been why that shoe did not work for me. I have since switched to Hokas and it's been a game changer. I did the following two marathons in the Hoka Bondi and had absolutely no foot pain the following day. I just ran CIM two months ago in the Hoka Clifton 7, and also no foot pain. I have done all my training in the same shoe, but I switch them out about every 300 miles and I usually run the race in a shoe that has 50 miles or less on it. I'm going to take your advice and get at least one or two more pairs in the rotation. Thinking about the Hoka Rincon for speed work. Will go try on a pair soon. Thanks for all your great content!

    I have 4 pairs of Altras, 1 Topo, 1 NB and 2 Asics and the only shoe I can't wear running or hiking are the NB but I can "kick around" in them. There's a seam inside the NB that my big toenail catches on even if I have it trimmed extra short. In the Altras I've tried the Lone Peaks (worn out 5 pairs still have three more). Altra Superior 4.5 (returned) and the Altra Timp 1.5. I liked the Superiors but the shoelace hole tore out. I also have 4 different expensive insoles I switch around but I stick to just one when I'm backpack. I often put the insole on top of the thin factory insole for more cushion and ALWAYS do that for backpacking. Oh, and one pair of Keens that I just picked up last week. My next purchase I'm thinking about the Hoka Speed Goat. I've been seeing a lot of them on the trail recently. I have a high arch and wide food so they have to have the same basic shape of the Altras. When I go to REI I just match up the insoles to the Lone Peaks so I know they will be wide enough.

      Lone Peaks are my trail shoe of choice - I would love to try the Superior since it's a bit lighter.

    I’m training for my first marathon (Atlanta- 2 weeks away!!) I have been training mostly in the saucony endorphin speeds and just got a pair of endorphin pros for the race! Will test them out during the taper.

    Solid advice, Jane! I like how you put the emphasis on comfort; when it comes down to it, nothing else matters!
    I use the Next%2 to race, the Endo Pro, Speed 2, and Puma Deviate Nitro for speed work, and the Ghost 14, Peg 38, Gel Nimbus 24 for easy runs. I’m most looking forward to the Reebok Floatride Energy 4 this year (non-plated). The FE3 was my 2021 shoe if the year. I’m still using it!

    I've been wearing ASICS Novablast 3 for daily runs. My go to shoes for faster days and most likely the shoes I'll wear for my first marathon are the ASICS Superblast.

      Several athletes on my team are huge fans of both those shoes as well! The only Asics I have are Gel-Nimbus for recovery days, but I love them!

    Wow, I’ve been doing it wrong but I’m at a good time to do it right.
    I just started distance running and running my first marathon in the fall. I’ve been using the Cloud X for training and the actual race. I have a 17.75k trail race and a half marathon under my belt.

      @@runningwithjane I am running the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington D.C. The 17.75k was also a Marine Corps race (named after its birth year in 1775) and so was the half named the Marine Corps Historic Half.
      I retired from the Corps last year and while I ran for overall fitness, I've really enjoyed distance running for my mental health and for the overall competitive spirit against myself. Love the channel by the way.

    Really sound advice Jane. Thanks for sharing. Ive got 2 pairs of road shoes that are identical in model and brand but have since bought different models and can definitely feel the difference in my body getting stronger with having to run in different ways with the variable cushioning and structures. Going to have a read of that study!

      I do think switching between even the same 2 models is better than not switching at all (especially if one is a bit older and more worn than the other)...but day to day the legs just feel better when you give them a different shoe, I think!

    I do most of my marathon training (from fast days to recovery) in the Hoka Clifton 8. My last pair went 1,100 miles and lost very little of the bounce they had on Day 1. Clifton is my workhorse. Last year I raced in the Saucony Endorphin Speed, and this year I'll graduate to the Endorphin Pro for race day. I agree with you Jane about having a racing pair, and using these just a few times in training to be sure they are the smoothest, fastest shoes on earth. An all-around shoe I've heard tons of good about (and tried them for few miles) is the New Balance Rebel v2. It's cushy, fast, bouncy, and light. Summary: Daily trainer-Clifton; Fast workouts-Rebel v2; Race-Endorphin Pro or Speed.

      Always hear great things about the Clifton. I have not returned to Hoka after getting the Bondi a few years ago and having a less than stellar experience, but so many people love their shoes so I might have to try again! Definitely going to take a look a look at the NB Rebel V2! Thanks Joel!

    Watching this at the end of an 18 week marathon training block. Running London in October 2022. I am a new runner and will use the Endorphin Speed 2 for the race. I did the bulk of my training in Hoka Clifton 8 (wide) and also New Balance 1080 V12 which has an amazing upper. Like a sock. For th ex trails I also got a pair of Hoka Speedgoat 5 which are quite similar to the Clifton.

    Good video. Yeah I'm not fast at all so even though I do speedwork every now and again I don't have a shoe with a plate. I just race in my daily trainers (Hoka Clifton or Topo Ultrafly) or if on a trail my trail shoes (Saucony Peregrine or Hoka Challenger), depending on how technical or flat the trail is.

      Yes, I failed to mention anything for people heading to the trails assuming most people watching the vid would be doing road training and racing (but maybe not!)       Yeah I bit the bullet the day they came out...the most I've ever spent on a pair of shoes that's for sure! Heard great things about the Brooks Hyperion...what type of runs do you typically use them for?

      @@runningwithjane Yes, the Hyperion Tempo is a great shoe so far. I use them for 5 K’s, speed work and tempos. I did do a marathon in them and not the best shoe for that distance. They are really light and the foam is really responsive.

    Thanks for the info, Jane! I know how important a correct shoe is!!
    My favorite shoe so far is the Brooks Ghost and my newest Hoka Bondi-X. But for me getting the right shoes is a journey just like running is, just have to find what works for you.! I think in one of your other videos you mentioned switching to Alta because of your heal striking, do you kinda work back up ahead of time with your Alta’s to wearing your Nike that don’t have a negative drop and does that mess you up at all?

      It is totally a journey! Great question about Altra...no I don't have to do any extra work because I'm interchanging btwn heel drops pretty frequently now. I use my Endorphin Pros once per week for speed work, for example. Also, I don't heel strike anymore no matter what shoe I'm wearing. You're welcome, Shane, and thanks for watching!

    Thanks Jane. Greetings from India. Your videos are very informative. I am a beginner and have 4 shoes in the rotation already (Glycerin, Nimbus for Easy; Hyperion Tempo for Speed, & Carbon X2 for race). I was wondering:
    1. How long can I keep my Race day shoes in the closet unused (given races don't happen more frequently nowadays). Do I have to use them after certain period of time to keep them in good form? or can I take them only for race (whenever that happens)
    2. If I use them only for races, how long will they last (in terms of duration). Will they be good for over 2-3 years if they did not hit their max advisable mileage by then?

      Hi Virender - such good questions I had to look up myself! Found this article that states that shoes DO have a shelf life because the glue, rubber and foam start to deteriorate.     From the moment I put my Altra Torins in I knew they were "the show" for me. I have three pairs now. I also have Altra Rivaras and Altra Paradigms but I keep coming back to my Torins. I will be trying Altra Vanish Tempos in my upcoming marathon. I put a few miles on them and so far no complaints.
    I've stick with Altra as a brand and like the zero drop. Would you recommend I stay with that or should I mix in another brand of shoe?

      Hey Dan - I've had good results mixing in different drops and ensures that you're working your soft tissues and joints in slightly different ways. I can't wait to hear how the Vanish Tempos do for you!! For me personally, I don't think I'll be dropping $200 on them since I already have 2 pairs of Nike carbon shoes, but maybe when they go on sale at some point!

    Great advice. I have run 12 marathons and just get a replacement of the same training shoe to race in (small wear in) before the race. This shoe rotation is news to me! My question is if I run in a (non race shoe/Nike Pegasus) for training and then swap into a speed shoe (Asics Metaspeed) for the race is there a danger of injury? As my legs will not have done over a half marathon in the race shoes and then go for a full 42k/22 miles?

      The only danger would be if the shoe didn't quite fit that well or it wasn't broken it and it gave you a bad blister, or cut into your ankle, etc. I would recommend wearing the Metaspeeds at least 3 times...probably for 2 speed sessions and then one of your longest long runs.

      Hello Ashish! Because it's still a fairly new model, I don't know of anywhere that has a regular discount on it. It runs $199 regular price. I would just keep an eye on the Garmin website and Amazon in case they have any deals. You could also go for the previous generation Garmin FR 45 which is less expensive.

      @@ashishm5763 its a outdoor type sport store. Im in Washington's State and its big up here lol
      I love it! Very rugged, water/shatter proof. I own a u-fish and petting zoo and its so durable. Battery life is what made me actually choose the 55. It lasts about 2 weeks! With constant running using the gps i get more like a week and a half. Ive only ever used Garmin so im not sure how the gps/HR accuracy compares to other brands of watches. The app is also very easy and it all connects to things like Strava
