  • Disclaimer: This is a video for people who are interested in old B&O or old hifi / tech. This is also my first attempt creating some TH-cam content.
This video just goes over some of the aspects of my B&O system which might be of interest to anyone who is looking at buying one of these. It’s my journey with the system and how I’ve acquired the separates and what work has been involved.

Beautiful system, a definite high point for B&O and certainly worth all the time and expense to restore. If you don’t already have it I can recommend a book called ‘ Bang and Olufsen- Crowood Collectors Series’ by Tim and `Nick Jarman. It is absolutely essential for anyone interested in older B&O as it details just about everything from 1925 to about 2005 and assess each item for availability and complexity, and they are as critical of some products as praising others. I’m sure you’re already aware of this book if you don’t already have a copy but just in case I thought I would mention it. My interest in the Jensen era is my BC7002 with S80 speakers which I’ve owned from new and still enjoy using to this day. Enjoy your BM8000 system, it is something special.

It’s a book I’ve been meaning to get! Tim Jarman fixed this very Beomaster and Beogram! He’s an absolute electronics wizard. It sat in a repair shop in my town for two years. Tim had it fixed in a few days.
I had a good go and did replace the caps on the amp boards and put precision turn multi screw trimmers on the q-current trimmers and Tim said I’d done a reasonable job of the soldering and there were no faults in there.
It was something to do with the digital volume stepper or something like that.
He’s well worth the drive if you have something you want fixing. What he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing 🤣. Beocentral is how I contacted him.

@@chrisbaker121924 Thanks. I’ve looked at Beocentral quite a few times, Tim’s book is basically a full blown expansion of that. Very informative, sometimes critical and absolutely essential. I think I got mine from Amazon but can’t be sure, it was quite a while ago. After Covid 🙁🤞, I may well contact him and see if he’ll look at all my kit in one lot, hopefully while I’m away visiting family in France later this year, Covid permitting which obviously right now nothing is certain at all. Where is Tim situated? I’m in Cornwall but am prepared to travel anywhere within reason, when permitted .
It’s been great conversing with you, I’ve enjoyed your videos and I look forward to more updates sometime. Stay in touch. Thanks

Yes he did say to me things like when he asked how I got into it I said “my parents had a beocenter 2200” and he said “and that didn’t put you off?” 😅.
He mostly loves the 70s/80s stuff and isn’t so fond of the new stuff generally. He’s got some amazing TV sets and some other really nice Japanese 70s equipment. His house is a museum for the stuff for sure an amazing sight for any beo enthusiast.
He’s located near London so would be fine for a stop off whilst on the way to France and not too bad from Cornwall for sure. He’s the best in the country with it. (Probably the world).
And thankyou! I’m not too good with this TH-cam stuff yet and really don’t know too much about video editing etc... I’m doing it all on my phone without any special equipment. The modern phone is an amazing thing! I’m just very passionate about them! Going to do some videos on old cars n stuff too soon :)

Great video. Iv recently put together a complete beo 5500 system. One piece at a time from all over the country. Best buy was an immaculate cona speaker bought for £85 with original box. Not a mark on it. A 140 each way drive to collect it was also a nice day out. Hope you are well.

Beautiful system you got there. Im actually surprised to se so many videos, where even HiFi entusiasts are really impressed with vintage B&O. In 1998 i bought a Beocenter 9500 from 1988, i believe ( still got it btw) But my friends where always teasing me with it, calling it garbish. But in my ears, it definitely soundet as good or better than some of their low end Hifi gear.
But the Beocenter series is not what i would call real Hifi, but nice sounding and stunningly beautiful in the bedromm.

I’ve had a 9500 and an 8500 which are essentially the same machines… they’re great units!
I think the bad rep for B&O came mostly from tower speakers… dare I say the 6000s being used as front music speakers and not TV surround speakers.
That and the “reboxed Phillips” rumour which was from the CDX mostly! Which actually is a nice machine.
My friends also have teased my B&O but have since admitted it sounds rather good. Better than some of their much more expensive gear imo 😄… I think back in the 60s-80s B&O stuff didn’t really have a bad reputation that came along in the 90s-00s

    • @Lennart942

@@chrisbaker121924 i agree. Nowdays Phillips i out. Ofcourse B&O still use standard products from other manifactors. It would be nuts otherwise.
But i think the beolab 6000 and 8000 era, forced B&O to learn to do the impossible. They spend alot, alot of money trying develope small speakers with good sound.
Look at the beolab 28. Thats where you can se that 30 years of effort finaly payes of. Wonder if B&O haters ever will admit it.

@@chrisbaker121924 Hi. Strange, I was only thinking about you and your TH-cam videos. A few weeks ago I put up a video comparing the BC9500 with the 9300, as I have both. Here’s the link if you’re interested. I am very poor at recoding and editing videos, and it shows 😄
      m.th-cam.com/video/Z8TS4Y3SCcw/w-d-xo.html
So much I forgot to say ie the 9500 has 2 way remote , 16 bit cd. The 9300 just 1 way and 1 bit CD player. I enjoy using both, the 9500 is better but that doesn’t in any way make the 9300 bad, just different. Hope you don’t mind me crashing in on your thread. Thanks.

@@Lennart942 that’s true and let’s face it they are heavily copied by almost every other manufacturer. Their tape decks and record decks in the 80s were really up there with the best. I for one think beolab 6000s sound alright especially with a sub if all you’re after is some background speakers that dissolve into the living room wall. Nothing looked like that in the early 90s

They were certainly not the first decks to use Dolby Noise Reduction. But B&O did invent the HX-Pro system and the Beocord 8000 was probably the first deck to be equipped with it.

Sadly what most don't realise is we've had the: 'future' we are now living in the: 'post future' OR rather: 'dystopia.'
(None of the likes of this tech will ever return unless of course we get remakes but they'll never be the same as the unique sophistication of the originals.)

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Indeed, I don’t know if we will really see much of a great leap like we did from the 60s-80s/90s again.
B&O themselves don’t even want to work on them so it’s left to a handful of specialists. I only know of around 3 people world wide now that understand how this particular system works or has sufficient interest to learn at least. 99% of electronic repair shops run a mile or have a go and fail at even getting inside it. I dread to think how many have ended up in landfill. 😬
Tim at beocentral is my go to contact and he is a genius! Rudy in America (beolover) and there’s probably a couple more in Denmark such as Dylan at beoworld that would know how to work on one.
Everything modern is designed to be modular, throw away that module and fit a new one. It’s rare anything modern is repaired

lovely system....wondering if this is a significant improvement on the 6000 system as far as reliability and sound quality etc? Is it a worthwhile upgrade? Many thanks in advance for any comments...

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  ปีที่แล้ว

I have both and to my ears dare I say it…. The 6000 perhaps sounds a little sweeter in the treble. The 8000 sounds meatier in the bass. They’re both very nice!
The 6000 somehow feels a bit more manufactured (in a good way) the speaker switches and the way the cooling block is done feels a bit more finished. It also has a built in clock where as the 8000 has to use the tape deck to set timing. The 8000 feels a bit more hand made somehow, a little rougher around the edges in its finish.
The digital tuning of the FM radio on the 8000 provides really good crystal clean signal, and overall would say it’s the most noticeable improvement over a 6000. The 8000 is also a few inches longer and the controls with the round dials are also very tactile! That’s probably the main reason. 8000s also being somewhat digital means they either work or don’t. You probably have a better shot of getting someone to repair a 6000 as it’s a little more conventional. The 8000 is quite unconventional and if you had one in 1980, it would probably have been the most powerful computer in your house 🤣.
Long story short… the 6000 is probably more prone to little issues, caps etc… the 8000 is trickier to fix but once sorted quite reliable. The 6000 sounds sweeter to me in the treble, the 8000 sounds meatier in the bass. They’re both lovely!

The radio section improvements are not that essential to me, it is more the SQ from the vinyl and tape deck that I am looking for....so it really boils down to go for the full 8000 system with the 150`s or just upgrade the speakers only?
