Since you commented upon the whole shadow versus lighting in the black-and-white movies, the most amazing example of that in an Indian movie is the song " Saaqiya aaj mujhe neend nahin aayegi" from sahib bibi aur ghulam You will be surprised to see in that song the lead dancer is always in the light and the backup dancers are always in the shadow.
