While I exceptionally love the homemade Sledge-O-Matic, I think the best part is the variety of skills showcased... Lumbering, turning (both close-enough, and tooled), woodworking (the hole for the handle), blacksmithing, CNC plasma cutting, new tool fabrication, welding, sanding, and finishing. Excellent skill-set show-off Jimmy. (I mean that in the complimentary way). Mixing multiple disciplines/skills is where the DIY gets separated from the makers. It's the goal every budding maker should aspire to.
Nice mallet! My dad built a giant mallet years ago with 8" pipe, super thick stuff, with 1/2" plate welded on the ends. It was a beast too. We used it to drive fence posts on the property for pasturing horses. Made quick work of it, and didn't beat the ends of the posts to pieces like an ordinary sledge would. My uncle (6ft, 200lb+ guy) borrowed it a few years later to drive some of those super (stupid) spikes for a fence we were building in town, and I watched him smash his shin with it. It was one of the most horrid things I've ever witnessed.
Nearly 5 years ago I got the amazing opportunity to meet Jimmy at his Manhattan shop when I was visiting New York for a film festival. After a tour, he showed me his most recent project, the brass ring mallet for Core77. I specifically remember holding it and thinking "Wow... this is one hell of a mallet..." 5 year's later I'm watching this like "Okay... Now THAT's one hell of a mallet!" Great video Jimmy, you outdo yourself with every project!
baby voice: "wow you couldn't even restore the drillpress right if it can't hold that chuck...you don't even respect your tools man!" love your work, stay safe, greeting rom Hungary!
First thing I thought of when I saw the poster frame. No Need IMHO 'Diresta's' on the head. He could have easily reached 5 rows with that one, if he could pick it up. ;-P Saw him 4-5 times live but never bought tickets for those rows. A great, funny Man!
Such a cool project. Great job jimmy. And a word to the safety police. Be your own guide to safety and don’t worry about everyone else. Do what your comfortable with.
OMG, the turning haters and safety police are going to have a field day with this. Had to pause just so I can say that. Anyone else love the transposition of seeing an 1855 lathe in the foreground and a CNC plasma table in the background? This is why I love Jimmy.
You certainly don't watch enough turning videos. This was tame... and proper, by most lathe work standards Ever see a chunk of seemingly rotted burl turned to exquisite art?
After a lifetime of being on construction sites and having ppe drilled into my brain, I still have the opinion that if it's your personal shop, I or no one else has any business telling someone what safety gear or safety measures to use. Some people just need to shut their mouth and watch and enjoy. But, just my opinion.....
@@KJ-kw7gh in all normal circumstances, I'd agree. And even in principle I agree. What makes me think twice is the video and TH-cam. Regardless of the "don't do this at home kiddies" warnings, people, and especially kids take these videos, especially one from popular makers/channels, as "the right way". I believe, as a nod to social etiquette, makers have a responsibility to at least make good efforts to showcase proper PPE usage. It's just good maker citizenship. That said, I make enough to know Jimmy is WAY beyond my skills, and if he says "don't so this it home", before I even attempt it, I'm gonna spend a LOT of time researching and investigating the proper and safe way to do something.
Wes Mischke If he added a 18inch semicircular plywood board to the tool rests base that could be stood on while in use it would still be easily moveable by stepping off but stabilised by his weight when its being used.
Anyone Else get sort of Excited When he used the Big Slick or Chisel that he repaired and Restored years ago?? I thought that was Awesome! Much Love Jimmy youre The best! My brotha from another Mother. Take Care my Friend. Oh and Beautiful Giant Mallet! Really reminds me of Gallagher's Smash-o- Matic lol
Have no idea what practical purpose this would serve, but loved the ton of different skills and tools you utilized! I love watching someone make something just to do it! You never fail to entertain and teach new tips and tricks along the way!
This reminds me of those "test your strength" mallets at the travelling carnival (or Coney Island) 😁 I liked that bandsaw trick where you hot glued some temporary pieces to "square" an round object as you pass it through the badnsaw. Loved the fruit smashing antics! Great work! This giant mallet needs it's own channel 😉
Now That's a Reamer...a two man reamer! Go big or go home. Great fun Jimmy and glad you weren't hurt with the Ash log. Had one do that on a big bowl and just missed my head and broke the overhead light. Loved the Gallagher reference. Safe and Healthy Please. Thanks Always!
Holy schnikies, talk about need a tool make a tool. That was a serious reamer😁. I also love that you’re totally playing with all of your new big toys in this video. Great job!

Looks suspiciously like the Sledge-O-Matic! It's ok though, I'm sure an original would cost ........who knows? Dozens of dollars? We like faithful replicas to!
The birth of the "SLEDGE-O-MATIC".. Great video as always I was Educated / Entertained . Stay well Taylor and you my brother. The Island is calming down
You sick sick man ! This was the highlight of my day and now has me looking at logs on my property with ominous intent. Thank you for this you rock sir!
Great video Jimmy, you always do a great job of showing the process, the problems and the problem solving that’s involved in projects. Thanks for keeping us all inspired.
I got all excited when you stuck that branch in the lathe and started your chainsaw. For a minute I thought you were going to do some crazy chainsaw wood turning thing :)
That last shot with the mallet leaning up against the stump with the watermelon....I was sitting here saying “do it...DO IITTT!!” Thanks for the Gallagher memories.
No chickens were harmed in the making of this video. Fruit however... : ) Wonderful video. Deceiving how much work goes into a mallet. Mahalo for sharing! : )
i love this kind of stuff. i'd never heard of locust wood before so i wiki'd it. says it's native to the amazon rainforest but it's just laying in a pile somewhere on jimmy's property. it's fantastic.
Making that giant tapered reamer was really clever. I also love how you had the chickens nearby so the smashed fruit wouldn't be wasted.
Where's my Hoverboard? I think he needed a big mallet to tap that reamer in.

DIRESTA the modern day Gallager!!!!!
This has to be the most entertaining way to feed chickens. Ever.
There are easier ways to give your chickens a snack, but I enjoyed watching this one!

I thought the same thing...made me laugh!
"It's not a slicer, not a dicer, not a chopper in a hopper! What in the Hell could it possibly be?!"
I'm waiting for him to change it just slightly or not use it for just a quick tack - the comments will be a shitshow.
I’ have same welder and love the functions. Unfortunately short on a lot other tools an imagination to creativity levels.

Sorry, Jimmy, there are no tools to bore out that hole.

Luthiers use one that's smaller for violin pegs.
Right...Jimmy just casually makes a random hole boring tool in the middle of this make. It’s like make-ception.
