We love seeing Americans see our game for the first time!
It’s one of the world’s oldest, if not the world’s oldest codified sport.
Being in the crowd at a good match is just one of life’s greatest joys. The crowds are full of children, old ladies, everyone, and the members OWN the clubs!
Deaths are extremely rare. Injuries are not rare. Head injuries are recently become a hot topic and rules have been changed to prevent concussed players going back into the game and so on.
We love our game! Footy is the most exciting sport in the world.
Women play too in their own league, they are astonishing. So tough and skilled.
    Welcome to footy!

I'm a US fan who gets all of the games. 2 weeks ago, there were over 96,000 fans at the Essendon and Collingwood game. I've been a fan since the early 80s, when ESPN was first starting, and they would show the AFL. It's not as violent as it used to be. Safety issues took precedence as the years have gone on, but it's still a tough game with remarkable athletes. These are, of course, highlights, but a good AFL game is fast-paced and exciting.

Yeah, this sport is pretty brutal. I had to stop playing when I was 24 because I was falling apart.
In the last 2 seasons I played, both shoulders dislocated, with one repeatedly coming out every other week. I was concussed 4 times in about 3 months. Back then, the science on concussions was nowhere near what it was today, so I'd play the week after a concussion. I broke my hand. Dislocated my thumb, middle finger, and pinky all in one incident.
Then, I had groin problems as well.
I was unable to work properly during the week, so much so my boss threatened to sack me if I didn't quit playing.
But I ended up quitting because I felt like I had the body of a 50 year old despite only being 24.
I don't regret playing, but I'm glad I quit when I did. I played in defence mostly, and it was my job to get hit and put myself in some really dangerous and stupid positions. It still blows my mind how some pros can play in that same position and play for 15 years.

It’s not like soccer where they fall to the ground, clutching their ankle, trying to “milk a penalty” from the referee because their opponent gazed in their general direction. Shit happens. Hi guys - not all of these hits are legal. If you are going to lay a hit (the proper term is a 'hip and shoulder') on someone, the onus is on you to ensure you don't make contact with the other person's head. If you do, you will be reported by the umpire (the AFL version of a yellow card, I guess), and the incident will be scrutinized after the match and the infringing player will have to plead their case as to why they should not be penalized. Generally speaking, if your eyes are on the ball and feet are on the ground when you make contact with someone's head it will usually be deemed an accident and no penalty given. As soon as you take your eyes off the ball or your feet off the ground and you make contact with someone's head, it will likely be considered careless conduct and you receive a fine or suspension, depending on the level of impact and the severity of the other person's injury. Some players have received suspensions of multiple weeks after seriously concussing their opponents. Concussion is the most common injury in the AFL so it is taken very seriously.
I recommend checking out What is AFL, or the updated version A Beginner's Guide to AFL - both are videos put out by the AFL, going over the basic rules and gameplay.

Crazy sport. I play for school in my year 9/10 firsts team (all girls age 14-16 ish), watched a girl tear her ACL after getting tackled a few years back and continuing that game was scary to say the least. In one of my games this season, a girl got a black eye, one broke her arm, 2 threw up from the heat, a hand full came off bleeding and even more ended up covered with bruises. We all got back to training the next week feeling pumped as ever because injury proves we are putting it all in. Love the sport. Too bad some girls schools are banning AFL because of concussions. Americans reacting to AFL is top tier entertainment :)

    Always great to see people taking an interest in AFL!! Just wanted to answer a few questions brought up for anyone interested;
-The height of the goal makes no difference in score.
-AFL players wear mouthguards, but they're fully within the mouth. I can see some NFL mouthguards have an external part just outside the mouth. Having said that, losing/chipping teeth is still a real risk.
-Each team has 18 players on the field.
-There's some rules about how you can tackle/bump other players and a few of these hits would've resulted in a penalty... although like most sports the rules were a bit more lax back in the day.
-When you see another player leaning over a player who went down hard, they're usually just checking to see if they're ok.
-AFL requires a fair amount of skill to play. The "Aussie Rules Explained" video said it best; height of a basketball player, hand and foot speed of an NFL wide receiver, and stamina greater than a soccer player.

@@darrenpants2700 Every town and suburb (just about) has a club , playing in a league with roughly nine other teams. And each league varies in the level of quality played.Even at a senior level we have the first eighteen and the seconds, so everyone who wants to play, despite their level of competence, can get a game. And if you just want to watch, you don't need to go to the AFL, you can wander over to your local park and see a game, during footy season.Even if you go in the morning, you can see the juniors kick the dew off the ground. They don't have those options in the U.S..Once they finish high school and if they are not good enough to play college level, their career is pretty much over.

shouldn’t be deliberate or he’ll get suspended. Remember too that this is not just one game, but highlights of incidents from different games. Great reaction guys👍

More information required before criticism. When you watch a video that is titled "AFL biggest hits, you should expect to see the worst of the worst of them. When you learn more, you'll appreciate the game so much more. Please don't send the f'ing snowflakes our way to ruin our sport. It is the best game in the world with plenty of reactors proving that fact. The game has been shown to so many other sporting organizations that all have the same opinion of it being a highly dedicated, physically improbable sport unless they had seen it with their own eyes. There is not another game on the planet where you can use other players as a step ladder to fight for possession of the ball. This sport is played with a hell of a lot more skill than you have given it credit for and i know you'll appreciate a sport that is older than most other sporting entities that you could name. The league itself is almost 150yrs old.

The greatest game. I played a few games when I was young. Kicked a few goals. Got a broken nose for my trouble. A guy jumped on my back once, for a mark, winded me. Play goes all ways, so you need good peripheral vision. I recommend the greatest marks (catches) - the most spectacular and unique part of the game. (The playing field is a big oval because it is played on cricket grounds. AFL is a winter sport. They play cricket in those stadiums in the summer.)

These guys are BIG... they look average but the taller guys are approaching 7', and the "sort guys' are generally around 6'1. They also run the 100 in 10 and change, and run around 10 miles every game. They are serious athletes
