So does no tail rotor mean no pedals? Just a collective and a stick? Seems that would make it super easy and simple to pilot!

Cool machine, interesting tale of how it won over the Marines.

It's just a little bit heinous. Does it have substantially greater lift for the rotor size than a single? Otherwise the simplicity argument doesn't hold well when you need a huge rotor to replace a small one.

The air-frame has proven itself a long time ago. Also ironically it is based on the world's first production helicopter. Tail rotors are complex after-all. Finally, form follows function. This workhorse does not have to be pretty.

It can lift its own weight (weights 6,000 lbs., lifts 6,000 lbs., total 12,000 lbs.). I'm not sure there's another helicopter out there that can do that.

      @@stevenathanas1336 Mi26, Skycrane, CH-53K...
      Btw, 6 000 x 2 = 12 000, not 120 000...

Damien Engemann. Steven’s comment is correct about the K-max being the only helicopter capable of lifting its own weight and still performing a mission. The Mi-26 can lift 44,000 lbs, but it’s basic weight is 62,170 lbs. The Skycrane can technically lift its own weight, but would only have enough fuel to do that for 5 minutes and 34 seconds. Here’s the math since you hit Steve upon an obvious typo. Empty Weight 19,234 lbs. Payload 20,000 lbs. Max takeoff weight 42,000 lbs. So 42,000 lbs Max takeoff weight, minus 400lbs crew (minimum 2 crew), minus Empty weight 19,234lbs, minus max payload of 20,000 lbs equals 2,366 pounds of fuel maximum for mission. JetA is 6.8 lbs per gal, and a Skycrane burn rate is 550 gals per hour that leaves 5 minutes and 34 seconds of run time. There may be some variations to the numbers I was able to get from Wikipedia, but you get the point Sir. You can do your own research on the CH-53 K, but I would suspect very similar results.

You could make a tactical version? Strap a M134 on with advanced IRV optics and you could with that weight limit have up to 2500kg of ammo capacity. A 7.62 nato round fired by a m134 weighs 2.54 grams, that's 2.54kg per 100 rounds thats just over 98,000 rounds of ammunition or 16 minutes of actual fire time with the rate of fire of 6000 rounds per minute.
560km range (fully loaded) at 85 gal/h on a 225gal tank you've got over 2 hours of active support.
Sure it is no M230, 30mm auto cannon but you could have a scalpel compared to a sledgehammer and with a low front facing profile, cost and operating cost like the Kmax dont sell yourself short for a night capable tactical platform

The video clips of this helicopter are limited, but the ones that show the USMC helicopter picking up freight are unmanned. Thanks for watching!
